Neutrophil Extracellular Traps Promote the Formation of Canine Dental Calculus.

Dental calculus is a highly prevalent oral condition in dogs and is widely recognized as an important risk factor for gingival inflammation and periodontal disease. Effective strategies for its prevention and treatment remain limited, highlighting the significance of exploring novel mechanisms underlying its formation. Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs), a key component of innate immunity, have been found in various diseases. To investigate the relationship between NETs and canine dental calculus formation, NET-associated markers were assessed in the oral cavities of dogs with dental calcul

Ancient dental calculus preserves signatures of biofilm succession and interindividual variation independent of dental pathology.

Dental calculus preserves oral microbes, enabling comparative studies of the oral microbiome and health through time. However, small sample sizes and limited dental health metadata have hindered health-focused investigations to date. Here, we investigate the relationship between tobacco pipe smoking and dental calculus microbiomes. Dental calculus from 75 individuals from the 19th century Middenbeemster skeletal collection (Netherlands) were analyzed by metagenomics. Demographic and dental health parameters were systematically recorded, including the presence/number of pipe notches. Comparativ

Dental Calculus Formation Rate: The Role of Salivary Proteome and Metaproteome.

BACKGROUND: Dental calculus accumulation varies across individuals. While various factors contribute to its accumulation, the role of salivary composition remains underexplored. This study aims to compare individuals suffering from rapid rates of dental calculus formation rates with those having slow formation rates in terms of salivary electrochemical properties as well as its proteomic, metaproteomic and elemental composition. METHODS: A total of 26 patients with a history of dental calculus were recruited. Saliva samples were collected and evaluated for electrochemical properties as well a

Reactivity of aragonite with dicalcium phosphate facilitates removal of dental calculus.

Dental calculus, a main contributor of periodontal diseases, is mostly composed of inorganic calcium phosphate species such as dicalcium phosphate, whitlockite, octa calcium phosphate, and hydroxyapatite. Under physiological pH 7.4, dicalcium phosphates can gradually interact with calcium carbonate to form hydroxyapatite. Therefore, we hypothesized that aragonite (Arg) could react with dental calculus, facilitating its removal. To assess the reactivity of Arg with dental calculus, we examined the changes in surface morphology, composition, and topography of Arg and dental calculus upon exposur

Periodontal Diagnosis in a Young Patient with an Unusual Presentation of Dental Calculus.

This report details the periodontal diagnosis and phase I treatment of an 18-year-old male patient dissatisfied with his teeth. The patient, on 20 mg Isotretinoin for acne, exhibited heavy calculus and plaque, generalized gingival inflammation, carious lesions, remaining roots, an anterior open bite, bilateral cross-bite, and an ectopically erupted tooth (#25). Initial scaling enabled examination, revealing FMPS and FMBS of 100%, PD of 1-7 mm, gingival recession of 1-2 mm, a maximum CAL of 6 mm, and radiographic bone loss of around 48% of teeth, reaching up to 15% of the root length. Diagnosed

Estimation and quantification of human DNA in dental calculus: A pilot study.

CONTEXT: Identification using DNA has proved its accuracy multiple times in the field of forensic investigations. Investigators usually rely on either teeth or bone as the DNA reservoirs. However, there are instances where the skeletal or dental remains are not available or not preserved properly. Moreover, due to religious beliefs, the family members of the dead do not allow the investigating team to damage the remains for the sole purpose of identification. AIM: To investigate the presence of human DNA in dental calculus and to quantify the amount, if present. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This p

Accuracy of dental calculus detection using digital radiography and image manipulation.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to determine if image enhancement improves a clinician's ability to identify the presence of calculus on digital radiographs. METHODS: Seventy-one hopeless teeth were collected from 34 patients. Teeth were stained with 1% methylene blue, the largest interproximal calculus deposit was scored, and photographs of each interproximal root surface were taken. The surface area of calculus deposit was determined as a percentage of the total interproximal root surface area. Digital radiographs of teeth taken before extraction were modified using the following enha

Dental Calculus Links Statistically to Angina Pectoris: 26-Year Observational Study.

OBJECTIVES: Dental infections, such as periodontitis, associate with atherosclerosis and its complications. We studied a cohort followed-up since 1985 for incidence of angina pectoris with the hypothesis that calculus accumulation, proxy for poor oral hygiene, links to this symptom. METHODS: In our Swedish prospective cohort study of 1676 randomly selected subjects followed-up for 26 years. In 1985 all subjects underwent clinical oral examination and answered a questionnaire assessing background variables such as socio-economic status and pack-years of smoking. By using data from the Center o

Fluoride profiles in dental calculus from Japanese, Chinese and British residents.

Whether the fluoride concentrations and profiles differ in human dental calculus obtained from different countries was investigated. A total of 203 dental calculus deposits on 203 permanent teeth from residents (mean age, 52.1 years) of Nagoya (Japan), Shanghai (China), Leeds (Great Britain) and the Wuhan mountainous area (China, fluoridated area) were analysed. An abrasive microsampling procedure was used to examine fluoride distribution. There were five types of fluoride profiles in dental calculus in each area/country (designated types L, J, U, T, W). In supragingival calculus, type L (high

Evidence for calcifying nanoparticles in gingival crevicular fluid and dental calculus in periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: Calcifying nanoparticles (CNPs), also known as nanobacteria, can produce carbonate apatite on their cell walls and initiate pathologic calcification. The objective of this study was to determine whether CNPs are present in the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) from subjects with periodontal disease and whether they can induce the pathologic calcification of primary cultured human gingival epithelial cells. METHODS: GCF and dental calculus samples were collected from 10 subjects with gingivitis and 10 subjects with chronic periodontitis. CNPs in GCF and calculus filtrates were detect

Neanderthal behaviour, diet, and disease inferred from ancient DNA in dental calculus.

Recent genomic data have revealed multiple interactions between Neanderthals and modern humans, but there is currently little genetic evidence regarding Neanderthal behaviour, diet, or disease. Here we describe the shotgun-sequencing of ancient DNA from five specimens of Neanderthal calcified dental plaque (calculus) and the characterization of regional differences in Neanderthal ecology. At Spy cave, Belgium, Neanderthal diet was heavily meat based and included woolly rhinoceros and wild sheep (mouflon), characteristic of a steppe environment. In contrast, no meat was detected in the diet of
