Studies on the association between body mass index (BMI) and dental caries among adults are limited. Moreover, individuals with a high BMI may be either physically active or inactive, but the impact of these combinations on dental caries remains unexplored. In this study, we aimed to investigate the associations between BMI, its combination with physical activity (PA), and dental caries in the adult population. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using data from Norwegian HUNT4 Oral Health Survey (2017-2019). BMI was categorized as < 25.0 (normal), 25.0-29.9 (overweight), or ≥ 30.0 kg/m2 (

INTRODUCTION: Dental caries is a disease with high prevalence and concern worldwide, especially among the elderly population. Considering the impact of saliva on the disease development process, protein biomarkers may be potentially useful to monitor the clinical course of the disease.
METHODS: This study recorded clinical data and conducted a proteomic analysis of the saliva of eighty elderly individuals (60-84 years). Participants were classified into a no active caries (NC) group and low caries activity (LC) and high caries activity (HC) groups. We hypothesized that the protein profile bet

Excessive consumption of sucrose by humans often leads to dental caries, primarily induced by the bacterium Streptococcus mutans. This bacterium utilizes glucosyltransferase to break down sugar into glucose, resulting in the synthesis of sticky glucan, which promotes caries formation. However, some individuals display resistance to caries due to the prevalence of other oral bacteria with inhibitory properties against S. mutans. This study aims to extract effective bacterial metabolites from isolated oral bacteria found in the microbiota of healthy individuals. These metabolites were selected b

OBJECTIVE: Dental plaque bacteria, including Streptococcus mutans (SM), play a role in the pathogenesis of the dental caries. There are conflicting results regarding the association of salivary SM level and dental caries susceptibility. Our aim was to compare salivary SM levels in colony-forming units (CFU) between children with active caries and caries-free children in Birjand, Iran.
METHODS: This case-control study included 61 six-year-old children referred to health centers in Birjand city, Iran, in 2022. The children were divided into two groups: case (dmft/DMFT>0 with active caries) (inc

The aim of the present study was to elucidate the correlation between the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) and the Snyder caries activity test (SCAT) for the assessment of early dental caries in preschool children. Dental health status of 153 children aged 3-5 years was evaluated by oral examination. The ICDAS stage (enamel opacity stage to cavitated dentine caries stage (stages 1-6)) was assigned based on the evaluation of each tooth surface by a trained dentist based on the number of decayed (d) and filled teeth (ft). In this study, scores of d3-6t (t, teeth), d3-

Radiopacities, caused by tin or zinc deposits in partly demineralized dental tissue, are frequently seen under amalgam restorations. The aim of this study was to determine to what extent these radiopaque areas could be identified by Caries Detector (1% acid red in propylene glycol) which is claimed to stain the irreversibly demineralized dentine. Twenty-eight extracted teeth showing radiopacities under amalgam fillings were selected. The restorations were removed, and Caries Detector was applied. Caries was excavated until the dentine did no longer stain with the Caries Detector. Standardized

The utilization of medicines to treat HIV-infected children has been promoting a decrease in the prevalence of soft-tissue oral lesions, as years pass by. In contrast, it has been observed that the experience of caries and gingivitis is constant in this population, mostly because of the chronic influence of some factors involved in the HIV-infection process, such as the chronic utilization of sweetened liquid medicines and carbohydrate-enriched diet, as well as frequent episodes of hospitalization. So, the purpose of this study was to evaluate if the quality and quantity of biofilm are importa

This article reviews the diagnostic process, from the first clinically evident stages of the caries process to development of pulpal pathosis. The caries diagnostic process includes 4 interconnected components-staging caries lesion severity, assessing caries lesion activity, and risk assessments at the patient and tooth surface level - which modify treatment decisions for the patient. Pulpal pathosis is diagnosed as reversible pulpitis, irreversible pulpitis (asymptomatic), irreversible pulpitis (symptomatic), and pulp necrosis. Periapical disease is diagnosed as symptomatic apical periodontit

BACKGROUND: Evidence-based caries management emphasises identification of disease drivers and causal, preventive, and behaviour-oriented care. However, limited evidence is available on how such care is documented for adults with high caries activity in routine public dental care. This study examined documentation of caries treatment and preventive measures consistent with evidence-based caries management, and whether documented care addressed underlying causes of caries disease.
METHODS: This retrospective observational record-review study included 418 adults aged 25-65 years from 19 Public D

BACKGROUND: Dental caries, commonly known as tooth decay, is a progressive breakdown of tooth tissues caused by the biofilm-producing bacteria, Streptococcus mutans. S. mutans plays a primary role in the initiation and progression of dental caries by producing a biofilm called dental plaque.
AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial and anti-biofilm effects of the neutralized postbiotic mediator (nPM) derived from Lactiplantibacillus plantarum KMC12 and to assess its potential as a therapeutic agent against S. mutans.
METHODS: KMC12 nPM was prepared through centrifugation, filtrati

BACKGROUND: Despite its proven preventability, dental caries is still common in young children attending preschools and primary schools ranging from 41.1% of children aged 3 years to 76.8% of children aged 5 years. The teachers should be involved in shaping oral health behaviors as they are recognized as children’s main authority. The state of teachers’ knowledge on oral health and causative factors of dental caries may influence teachers’ attitude to provide oral health education to students. METHODS: In 2019 primary school teachers were invited to take part in online survey. An anonymous ele

INTRODUCTION: Vitamin D performs various functions as a hormone by promoting calcium absorption but plays a major role in innate immunity, cell differentiation, cell maturation through its genomic effects via vitamin D receptor. The immune response also plays a major role in tooth surface and supporting structure destruction and playing a major factor in high caries formation. The inflammatory cytokines are released has proinflammatory cytokines and stimulate cells in disease process. Therefore, in the present study we have evaluated the association of salivary vitamin D, LL-37, interleukins 6

Dental caries (DC) is the most common oral pathology. The main bacteria responsible for DC is Streptococcus mutans. One of the strategies that can decrease or eliminate the risk of DC development is using compounds that will inhibit both the growth and virulence factors of S. mutans. Tannins are plant polyphenols that have strong antibacterial activity. The purpose of this study was to assess the antibacterial activity of three tannins against S. mutans. In this investigation, microbiological tests (MIC and MBC) and physicochemical techniques like the fluorescence measurements of tannins' inte

Introduction Dental caries is a global health issue. It is a largely preventable, multifactorial non-communicable disease. Given the gravity of the situation, in 2014 United States Preventive Services Task Force recommended that the primary care physician apply fluoride varnish from the eruption of the first tooth till the child attains five years of age. Using 2016-2019 National Survey of Children's Health (NSCH) cross-sectional representative data, the aim of this study was to determine if the child's age, gender, and race are predictors of the child having decayed teeth or cavities in the p

Background/Objectives: Young adulthood is a transitional period associated with changes in lifestyle and preventive dental attendance, which may influence caries risk. In routine practice, the use of comprehensive caries risk assessment systems is often limited by time and diagnostic requirements, highlighting the need for simplified diagnostic screening tools. This study aimed to develop and clinically validate a simplified, questionnaire-based caries risk assessment tool derived from the CAMBRA framework for use in young adults. Methods: An observational cross-sectional study was conducted a
