Scanning electron microscope evaluation of vertical and horizontal discrepancy in cast copings for single-tooth implant-supported prostheses.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Despite careful attention to waxing, investing, and casting, marginal discrepancies are inevitable. Vertical and horizontal discrepancies can result in crestal bone resorption, peri-implantitis, and loss of osseointegration. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate marginal gap and overhang in 3 casting techniques for implant framework fabrication. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 24 frameworks, 8 each with the Burn-out Cap (ITI; Straumann) (group BC), with Impression Cap (ITI; Straumann) (group IC), and with conventional wax-up technique (group WX) were fabricat

The Use of CAD/CAM Technology for Fabricating Cast Gold Survey Crowns under Existing Partial Removable Dental Prosthesis. A Clinical Report.

The fabrication of a survey crown under an existing partial removable dental prosthesis (PRDP) has always been a challenge to many dental practitioners. This clinical report presents a technique for fabricating accurate cast gold survey crowns to fit existing PRDPs using CAD/CAM technology. The report describes a technique that would digitally scan the coronal anatomy of a cast gold survey crown and an abutment tooth under existing PRDPs planned for restoration, prior to any preparation. The information is stored in the digital software where all the coronal anatomical details are preserved wi

Button versus buttonless castings for removable partial denture frameworks.

Casting removable partial dentures (RPDs) without completely filling the sprue channels and generating casting buttons would result in saving metal and making more defect-free castings. This investigation tested whether a complete and sound RPD casting can be obtained when a minimal amount of metal is used. A factorial experimental design, three spruing methods, two metal feeding directions, and two different weights of metal were used to cast 60 Kennedy class II, modification 1 RPDs. The metal used to cast each framework was either enough to result in a full button or in no button. Visual and

Effect of storage conditions on calcium sulphate hemihydrate-containing products.

OBJECTIVE: Dental gypsum products are liable to deterioration on exposure to the air because of reaction between calcium sulphate hemihydrate and water vapour. The purpose of this investigation was to refine the knowledge of the conditions and rates at which this occurred for a representative selection of such products with a view to improved storage recommendations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Absorption of water from controlled atmospheres (25-40 degrees C, 75-99% RH) was monitored gravimetrically for a dental artificial Stone, Plaster of Paris, an Impression plaster and a gypsum-bonded Investme

Production of a calcium silicate cement material from alginate impression material.

The purpose of this study was to synthesize biomaterials from daily dental waste. Since alginate impression material contains silica and calcium salts, we aimed to synthesize calcium silicate cement from alginate impression material. Gypsum-based investment material was also investigated as control. X-ray diffraction analyses revealed that although firing the set gypsum-based and modified investment materials at 1,200°C produced calcium silicates, firing the set alginate impression material did not. However, we succeeded when firing the set blend of pre-fired set alginate impression material a

A new method for casting discrepancy: some results for a phosphate-bonded investment.

OBJECTIVES: An accurate and realistic casting discrepancy method applicable to base metal alloys has hitherto been lacking. The purpose of this study was to develop a method for determining casting discrepancy free of interference from oxide, slag and surface defects, working under realistic conditions. In addition, a variable was sought that could be used for calibrating the casting process to allow for local errors. METHODS: A crown pattern was designed to incorporate circular V-grooves on the margin and the inside surface of the occlusal part for determination of the 'groove root diameter'

Interfacial oxidations of pure titanium and titanium alloys with investments.

External oxides of a commercially pure titanium (cpTi), Ti6Al4V alloy, and an experimental beta-type titanium alloy (Ti 53.4 wt%, Nb 29 wt%, Ta 13 wt%, and Zr 4.6 wt%) were characterized after heating to 600, 900, 1150, and 1400 degrees C in contact with three types of investments (alumina cement, magnesia cement, and phosphate-bonded) in air. XRD studies demonstrated that MgO, Li2TiO3 and/or Li2Ti3O7 were formed through reactions with the metal and the constituents in the magnesia cement-investment after heating to 900, 1150, and 1400 degrees C. Except for these conditions, TiO2 (rutile) was

Effect of heat history on the corrosion of ferritic stainless steels used for dental magnetic attachments.

This study investigated the effect of heat history on the corrosion of keepers used for dental magnetic attachments. Ferritic stainless steels of SUS 444 and 447J1 were prepared with heat treatments in the temperature range of 550-850 degrees C for 1-5 hours. The stainless steels were electrochemically and metallurgically examined by anodic polarization curves in a 0.9% NaCl solution and by microstructural observation using an electron probe microanalyzer with WDS. Heating both kinds of stainless steel at 650-750 degrees C for two hours or more led to the deterioration of their corrosion resis
