Enamel surface changes caused by hydrogen sulfide.

BACKGROUND: Volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) produced inside the mouth are a well-known cause of halitosis. Recent studies have suggested that VSCs modify the pathology of periodontitis by encouraging the migration of bacterial toxins associated with increased permeability of gingival epithelia, and enhancing the production of matrix metalloproteinases in gingival connective tissue. Nonetheless, the effects on the enamel of direct exposure to VSCs within the oral cavity remain unclear. In the present study, we observed the effects of VSCs in the form of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) on enamel surface

Pulp-dentin biology in restorative dentistry. Part 4: Dental caries--characteristics of lesions and pulpal reactions.

The infectious disease dental caries results in lesions that may affect enamel, dentin, pulp, and cementum. If a caries lesion has progressed to the stage at which it requires restorative intervention, it is important that the clinician understand the tissue changes in the dentin that are likely to have taken place during lesion development. Until the present, no major distinction between the restorative treatment of active (rapidly progressing) and arrested (slowly progressing) lesions has been made, despite the fact that the two conditions exhibit major differences in tissue changes in the p

[Effect of an electric field on the penetration of fluorides into dental enamel, studied in vitro and in vivo].

The aim of the present study is to determine the influence of iontophoresis on the deposition of fluorine in dental enamel. A micromethod of fluorine-deposition and of dental enamel-sampling was perfected in vitro; it was then applied in vivo. Fluorine was layed down by topical and iontophoretical way, under the form of sodium fluoride in neutral solution. In in-vitro and in 2 in-vivo asseys 18F was used as an indicator, while in other ones fluorine was titrated by mean of a specific lanthan-fluoride electrode. Results from both methods agree. It is stated that the fluorine deposition on ename

[Demineralization behavior, enamel permeability and the morphological characteristics in relationship to the stage of eruption of the permanent teeth].

The posteruptive maturation of enamel is an important factor in caries disposition. In an experimental study the demineralization of enamel as well as its permeability and its morphological features in dependence of eruption stage were examined on extracted premolars. Chemical analysis showed variations in the Ca/P molar ratio. It is possible, that the instability of Ca-ions in crystalline configuration decreased during the time of eruption. The permeability of enamel decreased between 5 and 11.8%. It appears to be useful to concentrate preventive measure on this phase of dentition development

Changes in the permselectivity of human teeth during caries attack.

Previous studies have shown that enamel permselectivity can influence fluid composition within caries lesions during de- and remineralization. The permselectivity of human enamel, cementum, and dentin sections was examined, in a microwell model, by measurement of the membrane potential developed by KCl diffusion while the sections were immersed in solutions simulating resting (pH = 5.6) and cariogenic plaque fluid (pH = 4.8). In a second experiment, the effects of charged compounds (phytate and Zonyl-FSC) on the tooth permselectivity were examined. The average membrane potentials (+/- SD) in "

Scanning electron microscopy study of dental enamel surface exposed to 35% hydrogen peroxide: alone, with saliva, and with 10% carbamide peroxide.

Several vital bleaching systems have been introduced in response to the demand in esthetic dentistry. The active agents are commonly hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide used in at-home or in-office techniques. Although generally positive results have been reported concerning the whitening ability of these agents, concerns still remain as to their effects on dental tissues. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effect of these bleaching agents on the enamel surface morphology. Twelve extracted teeth were used according to three experimental protocols. In experimental protoco

Tooth surface-pellicle lipids and their role in the protection of dental enamel against lactic-acid diffusion in man.

The lipid content and composition of the enamel pellicle from caries-resistant (CR) and caries-susceptible (CS) subjects and their effect on its ability to retard the diffusion of lactic acid were investigated. Lipids accounted for 22.2 per cent of the dry weight of CR pellicle and 23.7 per cent of CS pellicle. The content of glycolipids in both groups was similar but CR pellicle contained 42 per cent less neutral lipids and 31 per cent less phospholipids. CR lipids had a higher content of cholesterol, cholesterol esters and sphingomyelin, whereas CS pellicle was richer in free fatty acids and

Effect of trichloracetic acid on the microhardness and surface morphology of human dentin and enamel.

Trichloracetic acid is recommended for the treatment of external cervical root resorption. The present study examined the effect of 90% trichloracetic acid on the microhardness and surface morphology of human dentin and enamel. Intact extracted human teeth were sectioned and embedded in acrylic resin. Each tooth was grinded and highly polished exposing a flat surface of dentin and enamel. The teeth were treated with 90% trichloracetic acid for 30, 60 and 90 s. Vicker's microhardness of the dentin and enamel was assessed for each tooth before and after each treatment. In addition the surface mo

Effect of salivary pellicle on enamel subsurface demineralization in vitro.

Diffusion fluxes of two anionic species through hydroxyapatite membranes were found to be reduced up to 50% by the presence of adsorbed salivary pellicles developed on the membrane surfaces. By contrast, water fluxes were only marginally affected, indicating that salivary pellicles display ionic permselectivity. This property is used to explain a remarkable protection of the enamel observed when salivary pellicles were developed on extracted teeth before exposure to acid lactate buffers.

Predicting infiltration of the surface layer of natural enamel caries.

AIM: To test the hypothesis that the water volume more easily available for diffusion (αd) is the best predictor among all major components of the proportion of pore volume infiltrated by a liquid in the surface layer of dry natural enamel caries (NEC). MATERIALS AND METHOD: Two aqueous solutions of mercuric and potassium iodide (Thoulet's solutions) with different refractive indexes (1.4 and 1.47) and penetration coefficients (3212 cm/s and 2297 cm/s) were tested at histological points (n = 63) of ground sections of NEC lesions. Component volumes were measured with microradiography and inter

The role of ionic release from NovaMin (calcium sodium phosphosilicate) in tubule occlusion: an exploratory in vitro study using radio-labeled isotopes.

OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this work was to develop a method of quantifying the levels and source of calcium and phosphate deposited on dental hard tissue from a novel calcium phosphosilicate (NovaMin) material using neutron activation analysis (NAA). A second objective was to explore the utility of radiotracing to determine dentin porosity following exposure to calcium phosphosilicate. METHODS: Neutron activation was used to create isotopes of Ca and P in the calcium phosphosilicate particles. Gamma radiation emitted from these isotopes was used to identify and measure their uptake

Patterns of fluoro-gold entry into rat molar enamel, dentin, and pulp.

Permeabilities of enamel and dentin are not fully understood despite their importance for caries, restorative materials, and pulp-dentin-enamel interactions. We have found that Fluoro-Gold is useful for examining tooth permeability, and we designed studies to test the effects of aging, injury, neural function, and dentinal repair on its influx into vital rat teeth. We used fluorescence microscopy and immunocytochemistry to show that Fluoro-Gold rapidly penetrates enamel, the dentin-enamel junction, and outer dentinal acellular tubules, and then concentrates in odontoblasts, where it remains fo

[Should toothpastes foam? Sodium lauryl sulfate--a toothpaste detergent in focus].

Sodium lauryl sulfate is one of the most widely used synthetic detergents in toothpaste. Generally, surface active agents lower the surface tension, penetrate and loosen surface deposits and emulsify or suspend the debris which the dentifrice removes from the tooth. The concentration in dentifrices usually ranges from 0.5-2.0%. It has previously been shown that sodium lauryl sulfate has the potential to initiate hypersensitivity to metal ions. Furthermore, the mucosal permeability will be increased to oil and water soluble compounds. Experiments from this laboratory indicate that sodium lauryl

Cementoenamel junction: microscopic analysis and external cervical resorption.

There is a lack of data regarding the shapes and distribution of the mineralized tissue that composes the cementoenamel junction. A sample of 198 permanent human teeth was analyzed by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Scanning electron microscopy showed three types of tissue interrelations: enamel overlapped by cementum; enamel and cementum edge-to-edge; and a gap, revealing a strip of exposed dentin. Using optical microscopy, a fourth type of cementoenamel junction was observed: cementum overlapped by enamel. The distribution of the hard tissues found at the cementoenamel j

Composition of plaque and saliva following a sucrose challenge and use of an alpha-tricalcium-phosphate-containing chewing gum.

Calcium phosphate concentrations in plaque, plaque fluid, and saliva play an important role in caries prevention. In this study, we used a microanalytical technique to examine the anticaries potential of a 2.5% (mass fraction) alpha-tricalcium-phosphate-fortified experimental gum by measuring the pH, free and total calcium, and total phosphate in plaque fluid, whole plaque, and saliva, and centrifuged saliva from 14 subjects who (1) accumulated plaque for 48 hours, (2) fasted overnight, (3) rinsed for 1 min with sucrose, and (4) chewed a control or experimental gum for 15 min. From these data,
