Effect of surface conditioning and adhesive strategies on the repair bond strength of resin matrix ceramics.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of different surface pretreatment protocols on the repair bond strength and integrity of resin composite to three different resin matrix ceramics (RMCs). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Three RMCs - Cerasmart (CS), Grandio blocs (GB) and Katana Avencia (KA) - were subjected to one of three mechanical surface treatments: polishing, diamond bur roughening, or sandblasting. These were randomly assigned to four conditioning groups: 10-MDP and silane-containing adhesive (Clearfil Universal Bond Quick), 10-MDP-based adhesive (G-Premio Bond), 9% buffered hydrofluoric acid (H

Preformed posterior stainless steel crowns: an update.

For almost 50 years, dentists have used stainless steel crowns for primary and permanent posterior teeth. No other type of restoration offers the convenience, low cost, durability, and reliability of such crowns when interim full-coronal coverage is required. Preformed stainless steel crowns have improved over the years. Better luting cements have been developed and different methods of crown manipulation have evolved. This article reviews stainless steel crown procedures for primary and permanent posterior teeth. Step-by-step placement of a primary molar stainless steel crown is documented an

A comparison of acrylic and multilithic teeth bond strengths to acrylic denture base material.

AIM: Debonding of denture teeth from the denture base can be frustrating for both the clinician as well as his or her patients. The wear resistance of composite denture teeth has been well investigated since their introduction, but there have been few studies about the bonding of these teeth to acrylic denture base resins. The aim of this study was to compare the bond strengths of two brands of acrylic and one brand of multilithic denture teeth to acrylic denture base material. METHODS AND MATERIALS: In this experimental-laboratory study, three types of denture teeth--Yaghoot, Super Brilian,

Modified nasal alveolar molding appliance for management of cleft lip defect.

Nasal alveolar molding is used effectively to reshape the nasal cartilage and mold the maxillary arch before cleft lip repair and primary rhinoplasty. It provides aesthetic and functional benefits of nasal tip and alar symmetry and improved dental arch form. At The Craniofacial Center at the University of Illinois at Chicago, the authors have developed a modification of a nasal alveolar molding appliance previously described in the literature. The key modification is the use of an orthodontic wire from the palatal prosthesis with an acrylic bulb positioned inside the nose, underneath the apex

Oral rehabilitation of a completely edentulous epidermolysis bullosa patient with an implant-supported prosthesis: a clinical report.

This clinical report describes the rehabilitation of a completely edentulous 29-year-old man diagnosed with recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (EB). Four implants were placed in each arch, and metal-resin implant fixed complete dentures were fabricated for both arches. This treatment option appears to be favorable for EB patients, compared to other options involving removable prostheses, in that it causes less mechanical irritation to the oral mucosa.

TOTAL MAXILLARY BEAK RECONSTRUCTION IN A SOLOMON'S COCKATOO (CACATUA DUCORPSII) BY USING A SKULL-ANCHORED TITANIUM MESH PLATE PROSTHESIS: A NOVEL SURGICAL APPROACH OVERCOMING KERATIN-DEPENDENT FIXATION LIMITATIONS-A CASE REPORT.

Traumatic total maxillary beak avulsion in psittacines presents a significant surgical challenge due to the absence of residual keratinized or osseous tissue for conventional fixation, as well as the beak's critical roles in feeding and behavior. Existing repair techniques rely on anchoring to remaining beak structures and are therefore unsuitable for complete beak loss cases. This report describes a novel surgical approach for total maxillary beak reconstruction in a Solomon's cockatoo (Cacatua ducorpsii) with complete upper beak avulsion caused by intraspecific aggression. A titanium mesh pl

The ArchBridge™ Digitally Integrated Workflow: A Fully Digital, Model-Free Workflow for Implant-Supported Overdenture Rehabilitation.

Implant-supported overdentures provide predictable improvements in retention, stability, function, and patient satisfaction compared with conventional complete dentures. However, conventional prosthetic workflows may require multiple impressions, casts, jaw relation records, and laboratory procedures. Although digital dentistry has simplified many restorative procedures, complete-arch implant scanning remains challenging because edentulous arches provide limited stable landmarks for image stitching. This article describes the clinical application of the ArchBridge™ digitally integrated workflo

[Complications of graft infection after endovascular aortic aneurysm repair].

OBJECTIVE: The endovascular approach to aortic aneurysm repair is widely spreading as an alternative to open repair. However infectious complications may be devastating. We described the experiences with infected aortic endografts and reviewed treatment and outcomes. METHODS: Eight patients were treated due to infected aortic endografts between June 2008 and March 2014. Seven males and 1 female with median age of 66 years( range, 38-84years) had 5 infected thoracic endovascular aortic repairs (EVARs) [5/142:3.5%] and 3 endovascular aortic repairs (EVARs)[3/387:0.8%]. Prosthodontic rehabilitation of dental implants with exposed threads: a clinical report.

An unconventional technique was used to address the challenge of exposed dental implant threads. Titanium dental implants were prepared with rotary instruments to eliminate the exposed threads and to receive a fixed cementable prosthesis. The technique required fabrication of a gold casting of 2 copings connected by a round bar to fit the prepared implants and an implant-retained overdenture. This technique may be applied to other situations when multiple implants present with thread exposure and bone resorption. These include single crowns, partial fixed dental prostheses, and attachments for

[Perforating injury of the thoracic esophagus caused by a dental prosthesis].

The perforation of the thoracic oesophagus by a swallowed foreign body is associated with a mortality rate as high as 30%. Three cases of mediastinitis due to unsuccessful endoscopic extraction of a swallowed denture are reported. The clinical signs of thoracic oesophagus perforation are recalled. In one patient, an uneventful recovery is obtained by an early thoracotomy allowing the removal of the foreign body and the repair of the perforation, associated to a feeding jejunostomy and a gastrostomy (to control gastric secretion and reflux). In the other two cases, where the delay between endos

Which mechanical and physical testing methods are relevant for predicting the clinical performance of ceramic-based dental prostheses?

PURPOSE: The survival and performance of clinical prostheses with a ceramic component are probabilistic in nature. Only under very rare circumstances will all of the prostheses in a group exhibit either 100% successes or 100% failures over a period of 5 years or more. Prosthesis failure may be defined as any condition that leads to replacement. These conditions include secondary caries, irreversible pulpitis, excessive wear of opposing tooth surfaces, excessive erosion and roughening of the ceramic surface, ditching of the cement margin, unacceptable esthetics, cracking, chipping and fracture.

Simplifying cleft surgery by presurgical nasoalveolar molding (PNAM) for infant born with unilateral cleft lip, alveolus, and palate: a clinical report.

PATIENT: A 2-day-old female infant with complete unilateral cleft lip, alveolus, and palate (left side) was presented to the Department of Prosthodontics, Government Dental College and Hospital, Nagpur for evaluation and treatment with presurgical nasoalveolar molding (PNAM) prior to surgical intervention. DISCUSSION: The alignment of the alveolar segments creates the foundation upon which excellent results of primary lip and nasal surgery are dependent in the repair of the cleft lip, alveolus, and palate patient. Presurgical infant orthopedics has been employed since the 1950s as an adjuncti

Alveolar Bone Augmentation Using Octacalcium Phosphate and Collagen Composite with Custom-Made Titanium Mesh: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Extensive bone augmentation using artificial bone substitutes is difficult because of their inferior bone regeneration ability compared with that of autologous bone. However, octacalcium phosphate (OCP) and OCP collagen composite (OCP/Col) are better bone substitutes than other materials. Herein, we report a case of extensive alveolar-bone augmentation using OCP/Col and a titanium mesh for restoration of the occlusion and aesthetics using dental implants. CASE REPORT An 18-year-old man with maxillary anterior alveolar-bone deficiency due to a traffic accident was referred to our hos

Case Report: A digital workflow in the treatment of bruxism in a young patient.

Bruxism is increasingly common in today's stressful world and affects mainly young patients. It is a combined disease that involves dentition and its supporting structures, muscles, ligaments and the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Here we present a complete combined analog and digital clinical protocol in a patient with parafunction. A young patient sought help due to impaired aesthetics, as a result of abraded tooth surfaces and severe symptoms of TMJ. We implemented a therapeutic protocol of six stages: deprogramming of the muscles and determination of treatment position and digital optimiza

Insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 predicts survival from acute childhood leukemia.

BACKGROUND: The decision-making process about how to rehabilitate edentulous osseous defects in patients with head and neck cancer history can be complex. Even though, endosseous dental implants could be considered to be the first choice for treating these patients, it is highly important to be aware of the complications that might occur. The aim of this report was to describe the clinical features of mandibular fracture after dental implants placement on a cancer irradiated patient and update the available information about this event. CASE REPORT: The case describes a 70-year-old man, with

Foreign body in the airway: unusual cause of acute dyspnoe after cardiac surgery.

We report on a 68-year-old male who presented with acute onset of dyspnoea and cough. After coronary artery bypass grafting and mitral valve repair with an annuloplasty ring, postoperative recovery was initially uneventful. On the 6th postoperative day, he came back to intensive care unit due to acute dyspnoea. Fig. 1 demonstrates chest x-ray. We identified the foreign body as a dental prosthesis (Fig. 2). Removal from the right bronchial tree was successful using a flexible bronchoscope under local anesthesia; intubation was not required. This procedure was safe and well tolerated by the pati
