The organic matrix component of human pulp stones was investigated by immunohistochemistry. Two pulp stones were extracted from the upper molar teeth of two patients suffering from irreversible pulpitis. Both were formed in the center of the pulp cavity and located apart from the dentin walls. After demineralization, serial sections of the stones were prepared and subjected to immunohistochemical procedures using specific antibodies to type I collagen and noncollagenous proteins (osteopontin, osteonectin, and osteocalcin), which are reported to be involved in calcified matrix formation. Type I

OBJECTIVE: Since the 1960s, there has been contradictory evidence regarding the association between periodontal pathology and the status of the pulp. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the histopathological changes of pulp tissue with severe periodontal disease, including vertical bone loss involving the major apical foramen, and compared them with the histological pulpal status of teeth with healthy periodontium.
METHODS: This case-controlled study included 35 intact teeth with severe periodontitis of hopeless prognosis (test group) and 35 teeth without periodontitis extracted for ort

Cluster of differentiation (CD)44 is a marker of dental pulp stem cells and is involved in odontoblast differentiation and calcification. Chemokine-like receptor 1 (CMKLR1), also known as chemerin receptor 23 (ChemR23) is also expressed in odontoblasts and dental pulp stem cells and is involved in inflammation suppression and tooth regeneration. Resolvin E1, a bioactive lipid, is a CMKLR1 ligand that mediates the chemerin-CMKLR1 interaction and suppresses pulpal inflammation. The present study clarified the intracellular and tissue localization of CD44 and CMKLR1 by immunohistochemical stainin

A patient with pseudohypoparathyroidism is presented. The phenotypic appearance, known as Albright heredity osteodystrophy includes: short stature, round face, brachydactylia, and ectopic calcifications in the soft tissues. Dental manifestations reported in the literature are enamel hypoplasia, hypodontia, malformed roots, enlarged pulp chambers, microdontia, and pulp calcifications. Additional findings in this case are ankylosis and an enlarged frontal sinus. The delayed diagnosis of pseudohypoparathyroidism with the early presentation of multiple dental anomalies is discussed.

Vital pulp therapy (VPT) has gained prominence with the increasing trends towards conservative dental treatment with specific indications for preserving tooth vitality by selectively removing the inflamed tissue instead of the entire dental pulp. Although VPT has shown high success rates in long-term follow-up, adverse effects have been reported due to the calcification of tooth canals by mineral trioxide aggregates (MTAs), which are commonly used in VPT. Canal calcification poses challenges for accessing instruments during retreatment procedures. To address this issue, this study evaluated th

Studies on human and animal models have demonstrated a complex molecular regulatory network between the dental mesenchyme and epithelium governing tooth development. However, epigenetic regulation of tooth development is largely unexplored. This study aimed to elucidate the relationship between epigenetic modifiers and dental root development using mice deficient in histone deacetylase 3 (Hdac3) under the control of the osterix promoter (Osx-Cre/Hdac3fl/fl or Hdac3-CKOosx). We observed tooth root size and histology in Hdac3-CKOosx mice. Dental pulp progenitor cells (DPCs) were isolated from lo

INTRODUCTION: Current understanding of the morphology of pulpal mineralizations is limited. Understanding the specific location and type of such mineralizations will aid clinicians in diagnosis, case complexity assessment, and treatment planning. Therefore, this study correlated the appearance of a reduced canal volume (CV) in conventional radiographs with the presence of pulp mineralizations (PMs) utilizing micro-computed tomography (CT) analysis. The morphology of PMs utilizing micro-CT technology was also analyzed.
METHODS: One hundred and twenty-one extracted permanent mandibular incisors

The dental pulp was capped indirectly or directly, or partial vital pulpectomy was performed on the 12 functionally most important teeth of 24 beagle dogs. For pulp capping, calcium hydroxide was used, followed by zinc phosphate as a lining, and the preparation was restored with amalgam or composite material. Histological sections were prepared and examined for degree and type of pulp inflammation (hyperaemia, pulpitis, necrosis or gangrene). Degenerative changes of dental pulp (vacuolation, calcification, amyloid or hyaline changes) were also determined. For indirect pulp capping the width of

The presence of calcifications or hard deposits within the pulp chamber of the teeth is referred to as pulp stones. There is a geographic and ethnic variation in the occurrence of these calcifications in the population. The article assessed the occurrence of pulp stones. As a secondary objective, the gender or age difference was also assessed. This study was carried out retrospectively by analyzing the archived dental radiographs. A total of 100 radiographs were taken for the analysis based on random sampling. The selected samples were scanned for the occurrence of pulp stones. From a total of

The specific properties of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in oral tissues still remain unknown though their existence has been previously reported. We collected gingiva, dental pulp, and periodontal ligament tissues from removed teeth and isolated MSCs. These MSCs were compared in terms of their yields per tooth, surface epitopes, and differentiation potentials by patient-matched analysis. For in vivo calcification analysis, rat gingival and dental pulp cells mounted on β-tricalcium phospateTCP were transplanted into the perivertebral muscle of rats for 6 weeks. Gingival cells and dental pulp c

In this paper we have realized a study on 43 patients on which the retro-alveolar radiological exam has shown the existence of a calcareous structure within the pulp chamber having in view a better knowledge of this structure and its etiology, way of forming and pathological implications. For 16 of the patients the radiological exam was supplemented by a microscopic examination. Radiologically, the denticles were noticed more often in the pulp chamber of the molars. The examination of the histological samples has evidenced aspects such as the size, shape and structure of the denticles. The con

Many different classification systems have been advocated for pulp diseases. However, most of them are based on histopathological findings rather than clinical findings which leads to confusion since there is little correlation between them. Most classifications mix clinical and histological terms resulting in misleading terminology and diagnoses. This in turn leads to further confusion and uncertainty in clinical practice when a rational treatment plan needs to be established in order to manage a specific pathological entity. A simple, yet practical classification of pulp diseases which uses

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Pulp stones are discrete calcified masses appearing in the dental pulp of healthy, disease and unerupted teeth. They are presented freely within the pulp tissue or attached and embedded in any part of coronal and radicular dentin. Here, the purposes of this study were to identify the presence of pulp stones in periodontal patients using digital panoramic and periapical radiographies, and to determine the association with gender, age, tooth type and dental arch.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study on selected records of 465 dental samples obtained between J

The effects of vital root resection upon the remaining pulp were studied in twenty-six periodontally involved human molars. The pulp was extirpated 14 days after the intervention. Granulomatous tissue present in the pulp chamber protruded from the site of the exposure as a polyp in eleven cases. Mild chronic inflammatory changes were present in the coronalmost part of the radicular pulp. The apical pulp was not affected at this time interval.

Throughout lifetime, the teeth are continuously exposed to numerous chemical and physical impacts, which cause the wear of the dental hard tissues, gingival recession and other oral changes with sometimes subsequent problems. Age-related wear of tooth surfaces reduces the dental enamel thickness and exposes deeper layers of enamel, which have different physical and chemical properties than the surface enamel. Gingival recession is the main causal factor of root caries and dentine hypersensitivity. Age-related changes in dentine include the formation of secondary dentine and the reduction in tu

The current case study evaluated the effect of vital pulp therapy on a human dental pulp after a long-term period using micro-computed tomography (MCT) for the first time. In the presented report, the successful outcomes of full pulpotomy using calcium-enriched mixture (CEM) cement on an irreversible pulpitis case were documented clinically/radiographically over 5 years. Due to an unrestorable crown fracture at the 5-year recall, the tooth was extracted and evaluated by MCT; the images showed that CEM pulpotomy allowed the dental pulp to create complete dentinal bridges without pulp canal obli

The authors studied the dental pulp morphology and distribution of acid and neutral mucopolysaccharides in teeth subjected to orthodontic therapy. The teeth were moved with a fixed appliance using forces of 60-200 g. Changes in the histological structure of the dental pulp followed the therapy. The number of collagen fibres increased; they were densely packed and formed thick bundles. A certain degree of hyalinization was also observed. The dental pulp cavity was narrowed by apposition of hard tissue deposits along the canal wall. Pulp stones and diffuse calcification were often encountered. T
