BACKGROUND: There are several occupations that can expose people to some air pollutants. Dental technicians are exposed to inorganic dust and chemical vapors when making dental prosthesis that can put them at risk for respiratory problems. This study was performed to assess respiratory dysfunction in a group of dental technicians.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study designed to ascertain the prevalence of respiratory disorders in dental laboratory technicians in Rasht, a city located in north of Iran. A Structured questionnaire was adapted according to the European Communi

From the registry of self employed workers living in Paris, a group of 105 dental technicians was studied to evaluate occupational exposure, to determine respiratory manifestations, and to investigate immune disturbances. Seventy one dental technicians (age range 43-68: group D), 34 dental technicians younger than 43 or older than 68 (group d), and 68 control workers (age range 43-66: group C) were investigated. The demographic characteristics and the smoking habits of the groups D and C did not differ significantly. The dental technicians often worked alone (43.7%) or in small laboratories wi

BACKGROUND: Traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) require prompt and appropriate emergency management. In Turkey, university-affiliated Health Services Vocational Schools train auxiliary healthcare personnel who may be first responders in such cases. However, the extent of their knowledge on dental trauma remains unclear. This study aimed to assess the awareness regarding TDI emergency management among students enrolled in university-affiliated Health Vocational Schools in Turkey, and to determine whether these levels differ between academic years. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted am

Silicosis is a chronic lung disease caused by prolonged inhalation of crystalline silica particles, frequently encountered in professionals exposed to silica dust. We report the case of a 54-year-old dental technician presenting with progressive dyspnea, where the diagnosis of silicosis was confirmed based on occupational history and characteristic radiological findings. A differential diagnosis with sarcoidosis was initially considered. This case highlights the importance of early recognition of occupational lung diseases and emphasizes the need for preventive measures to limit silica exposur

Occupational exposure to vibration using hand-held tools may cause hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) among workers. We report the case of a 39-year-old lady with a 5-year work exposure to repetitive wrist movements and vibration from hand tools in the dental fabrication laboratory, working as a dental technician. She presented with a 3-year history of chronic pain over the wrists and positive symptoms of numbness and tingling in the hands, pain and discomfort of the fingers during cold exposure, and poor grip strength. Symptoms over the right hand were worse than the left. She is right-hand d

A variety of materials are used in dental prosthesis laboratories (DPL), especially metal alloys and methyl methacrylate (MMA)-based monomers and polymers. These metal alloys contain elements such as cobalt, chromium, nickel, molybdenum, lead, and mercury that can have toxic effects on human health when excessive amounts of exposure occur. This study aims to investigate the cytotoxic effects of occupational exposure due to dental prosthesis manufacturing operations on erythrocyte cells. Thirty DPL workers were compared with the 30 control group and the questionnaire forms were applied includin

BACKGROUND: Rotating instruments in dentistry are radiating an unpleasant high-frequency noise, which was supposed to produce hearing loss by its loudness. Therefore frequently notifications and recognizing procedures were initiated because of the suspicion of occupational noise-induced hearing loss (German listing for occupational diseases as given by decree: Number 2301). In recent years dentists, dental technicians and dental assistants repeatedly had to be tested because of a suspicion for noise-induced inner ear damage.
METHODS: Noise measurements were performed in 3 working places of de

A 56-year-old man with a family history of interstitial lung disease and long-term occupational exposure to toxins as a dental technician presented with progressive dyspnea. High-resolution computed tomography revealed a usual interstitial pneumonia pattern (UIP). A surgical lung biopsy revealed UIP with fibroblastic foci and granulomatous lesions containing birefringent particles. An elemental analysis identified multiple inorganic elements, including silica and dental metals, but not cobalt or tungsten. Despite antifibrotic and anti-inflammatory therapy, the disease progressed rapidly, and t

BACKGROUND: In dental laboratories, exposure to crystalline silica can occur during procedures that generate suspended mineral dusts, e.g. dispersion of mixing powders, removal of castings from molds grinding, polishing of castings and porcelain, and use of silica sand for blasting. There is also a large list of toxic agents (acrylic resins, polymeric materials, etc.) used to produce removable and fixed prostheses, but also impression materials and more. Using personal protective equipment and other aids reduces the exposure to these potentially harmful agents.

BACKGROUND: Occupational and chronic exposure to solvents and metals is considered a possible risk factor for Parkinson's disease and essential tremor. While manufacturing dental prostheses, dental technicians are exposed to numerous chemicals that contain toxins known to affect the central nervous system, such as solvents (which contain n-hexane in particular) and metals (which contain mercury, iron, chromium, cobalt and nickel).
METHODS: We performed an epidemiological and clinical study on all 27 dental technicians working in a school for dental technicians. We asked all the technicians to

We describe an 18-year-old dental technician who presented with dry hyperkeratotic lesions on his left palm that were limited to an area that was in contact with a container in which he had prepared the molds for a dental prosthesis. On patch testing, he had a positive reaction to black rubber mix and its components N-cyclohexyl-N'-phenyl-4-phenylenediamine, N,N'-diphenyl-4-phenylenediamine, and N-isopropyl-N'-phenyl-4-phenylenediamine, as well as to a piece of the rubber container. Thin-layer chromatography (TLC) of a piece of the rubber container confirmed the presence of the para-phenylened

In Germany, occupational skin disease (OSD) in dental technicians (DT) has been steadily rising in recent years and causing considerable costs for medical care and rehabilitation. Our objective in this study was to: (i) examine affected workers; (ii) perform patch tests to identify causative agents; (iii) develop strategies of prevention. 7 dental laboratories were inspected as to materials used, working habits, safety regulations, etc. A computer data base was developed for products (trade name, active ingredient, additives, etc.). A questionnaire regarding development of OSD was sent out to

The substance methylmethacrylate (MMA) is an organic solvent which is employed inter alii for prostheses which is suspected of being neurotoxic. With the object of illustrating whether there is a connection between exposure to MMA and symptoms of organic dementia, a cross-sectional investigation was carried out on a population consisting of occupationally active dental technicians and opticians (n = 528) and a group of dental technicians who were no longer occupationally active (n = 173). No noteworthy difference in the background variables, apart from age, was observed. Age was taken into con

Evidence from the literature indicates that workers in the dental care sector are routinely exposed to hazardous airborne agents, particularly mineral and metal dusts. This occupational risk is further amplified in settings with inadequate ventilation and insufficient use of personal protective equipment. We discuss the case of a dental technician with a significant history of occupational exposure who presented to our clinic with exertional dyspnea. High-resolution computed tomography revealed fibrosing nonspecific interstitial pneumonia associated with emphysema, and spirometry showed a seve
