Arginine Dentifrices and Childhood Caries Prevention: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries remains a significant oral health burden globally. Scientific evidence has demonstrated the dose-dependent anticaries action of fluoride; however, more effective, comprehensive, and alternative prevention strategies are required. METHODS: A 2-y, phase 3, randomized controlled trial based on a double-blind, 3-arm, parallel-group design was conducted from April 15, 2019, through March 12, 2022 across 3 centers in China. Six thousand children aged 10 to 14 y with ≥2 active caries lesions were assigned 1 of 3 study dentifrices: 8.0% arginine, 1.5% arginine, and 0.32% sod

Antibacterial effects of charcoal and fluoride dentifrices in oral biofilms.

OBJECTIVES: Charcoal-containing dentifrices are increasingly popular for their whitening claims, but data on antimicrobial effects are limited. This study compared the antibacterial efficacy of charcoal dentifrices versus non-charcoal dentifrices containing sodium fluoride (NaF), stannous fluoride (SnF₂), or sodium monofluorophosphate (NaMFP) against multi-species oral biofilms. METHODS: Biofilms of Streptococcus mutans, S. gordonii, and S. sanguinis were grown on hydroxyapatite discs and treated for 60 s with 6 dentifrice slurries (3 charcoal, 3 non-charcoal dentifrices) or controls (saline

Effectiveness of remineralizing dentifrices against caries lesions: A systematic approach.

OBJECTIVES: Dental caries remains a prevalent global oral health problem. Fluoride promotes enamel remineralization but is less effective on deeper lesions. Non-invasive agents, including bioactive glass and casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP), aim to enhance remineralization and prevent caries. METHODS: A systematic review of in vitro studies was conducted following PRISMA 2020 guidelines. PubMed, Ovid, Cochrane Library, ScienceDirect, and Scopus were searched for studies published before 31 December 31, 2024. Titles, abstracts, and full texts were screened independen

The effects of dentifrice systems on oral malodor.

Chronic oral malodor is a serious concern for about one-fifth of the North American population, and a field of emerging research interest. The present three studies, one involving gas chromatography and two employing odor judge assessment, examined the efficacy of baking soda and other toothpastes in reducing breath odor. The most common cause of oral malodor is elevated levels of volatile sulfur compounds (VSC's), primarily hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and methyl mercaptan (CH3SH), in the breath. Gas chromatography, an accurate means of measuring breath VSC, was employed to evaluate the breath leve

Antigingivitis efficacy of a stabilized stannous fluoride/sodium hexametaphosphate dentifrice in subjects previously nonresponsive to a triclosan/copolymer dentifrice.

Antimicrobial agents, such as stannous fluoride and triclosan, have been incorporated into dentifrice formulations and shown to be effective in the prevention and reduction of gingivitis. However, not all subjects respond to treatment. The objective of this study was to assess the antigingivitis efficacy of a 0.454% stannous fluoride/sodium hexametaphosphate dentifrice among subjects who were identified as nonresponsive or minimally responsive to a sodium fluoride/triclosan/copolymer dentifrice. This was a 12-week, examiner-blind, single-center study. Forty-one subjects with no or minimal ging

Evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of dentifrices on human oral bacteria.

OBJECTIVE: In vitro testing of antimicrobial agents is an important tool in the testing hierarchy, and may provide interesting insights into their potential clinical efficacy. Agents with demonstrable in vitro antimicrobial activity may be effective against the same microorganisms in vivo, whereas agents without demonstrable in vitro antimicrobial activity are unlikely to exhibit in vivo antimicrobial activity. In addition, these methods may also be useful in screening antimicrobial agents in product formulations because such agents with both in vitro and in vivo activity may have reduced anti
