Scanning electron microscopic characterization of sensitive vs. insensitive human radicular dentin.

Our aim was to investigate the structural changes of dentinal tubules in specimens obtained from both hypersensitive and naturally desensitized areas in wedge-shaped defects on the same exposed cervical dentin surface of a hypersensitive tooth. A new biopsy technique that makes use of a hollow, cylindrical diamond bur was designed so that specimens from exposed root dentin of vital teeth could be obtained. Twenty-two dentin biopsy pairs were divided into two groups; one was prepared for scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the other for microradiography (MR). Small hypersensitive areas were

Dentin sensitivity, odontoblasts and nerves under desiccated or infected experimental cavities. A clinical, light microscopic and ultrastructural investigation.

Cavities were prepared in 35 pairs of young human premolars. One tooth in each pair served as a control. In one Series the test cavity was desiccated with compressed air for one minute. LM and TEM examination of the dentin and the adjacent pulp revealed an extensive aspiration of odontoblasts. Nerve fibers had moved 0.1 to 0.2 mm outward in the tubules. It is suggested that a streching or disruption of the nerve had occurred during desiccation. In a second Series, the test cavity was infected for 1 to 2 weeks. No nerve fibers were seen in the dentinal tubules under the cavities, only cellular

A guide for an anatomically sensitive dentine microsampling and age-alignment approach for human teeth isotopic sequences.

OBJECTIVES: Stable isotope analysis of sequential dentine samples is a potentially powerful method to reveal insights into early life-histories of individuals in the past. Dentine incremental growth structures are complex, however, and current approaches that apply horizontal sectioning of demineralized tooth halves or quarters risk combining multiple growth layers and may include unwanted cementum or secondary dentine. They also require destruction of large parts of a tooth. Here, we present a less destructive and relatively straightforward protocol that reduces damage, increases temporal res

Cervical tooth wear and sensitivity: erosion, softening and rehardening of dentine; effects of pH, time and ultrasonication.

BACKGROUND: Cervical dentine wear is commonly observed and may be associated with dentine hypersensitivity. Erosion is thought to play a part in both conditions but compared to enamel has been little studied in dentine. AIM: The aims of these studies in vitro were to: (i) determine the effects of citric acid on dentine at different pH values and over time; (ii) measure the depth of dentine demineralisation or softening using ultrasonication; (iii) determine whether softened dentine can be remineralised or rehardened using artificial saliva. METHODS: Groups of flat dentine specimens prepared

Clinical evaluation of cervical dentine sensitivity in a population of patients referred to a specialist periodontology department: a pilot study.

The prevalence of tooth sensitivity [Cervical Dentine Sensitivity (CDS)] in adult populations indicates that 8-35% of subjects reported CDS depending on the population studied and the methodology used. Few studies, however, have reported on the prevalence of CDS in periodontal patients. The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence, severity and distribution of CDS in patients referred for specialist periodontal diagnosis. Fifty-one patients [27 male, 24 female; mean age 48.5 years (standard deviation 11.63)] who gave their informed written consent were clinically evaluated for CDS usin

Evaluation of skin irritation and sensitization of two diol solutions used as experimental dentin primers in humans and guinea pigs.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the safety of ethylene glyco (EG) and 1,6-hexanediol (HD) solutions as experimental dentin primers when subjected to the guinea pig maximization test (GPMT), primary irritation test, cumulative skin irritation test and human patch test. No primary and cumulative skin irritation resulting from the use of 62.5% EG or 45% HD solutions was observed. In the case of GPMT, the animals sensitized with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (2-HEMA) responded to 100% HD. 62.5% EG and 45% HD as dentin primers were safer than 2-HEMA such as a methacrylic primer.

Effectiveness of immediate dentine sealing and resin coating in reducing dental sensitivity in a child with idiopathic neuropathy and anterior dental attrition: Case report.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic neuropathy is a peripheral nervous system disorder of unknown etiology. Patients with this disorder often suffer from bruxism problems. Bruxism is defined as an oral parafunction characterized by occlusal contacts resulting from non-physiological, repetitive, and involuntary masticatory motor activities. These events can trigger accentuated wear of the tooth structure leading to sensitivity. Tooth sensitivity is the pain arising from the exposed dentin in response to chemical, thermal, tactile, or osmotic stimuli that cannot be explained as the result of any other dental

The neurophysiological basis and the role of inflammatory reactions in dentine hypersensitivity.

Recent studies indicate that intradental A-type nerve fibres are responsible for the sensitivity of dentine and are activated by fluid movements in dentinal tubules (hydrodynamic mechanism). The patency of the tubules affects dentine sensitivity to a great extent. Both A delta- and A beta-type nerve fibres respond to dentinal (hydrodynamic) stimulation in a similar way. Only a few studies have been made on the regional sensitivity of dentine or the receptive areas of intradental nerve fibres. The results indicate that the fibres innervating different parts of coronal dentine are equally sensit

Neurophysiological mechanisms of dentin hypersensitivity.

In hypersensitive teeth pain is typically induced by cold and hot fluids or foods brought to contact with the sensitive dentin or by osmotic and mechanical stimuli. The results of animal experiments indicate that intradental A-type nerve fibres are responsible for the sensitivity of dentin. They are most probably activated by the hydrodynamic mechanism. Thus, their activation is to a great extent dependent on the condition of dentin with either open or blocked dentinal tubules. Blocking of the tubules effectively prevents the nerve activation. Correspondingly, in human experiments, the conditi

Calcium Sodium Phosphosilicate in Management of Dentin Hypersensitivity and Strategies for Reconstitution of the Dentin Matrix.

Dentin hypersensitivity (DH) prevalence ranges from 72.5%-98% and is common from the third decade of life. Despite the variety of products available, dentine hypersensitivity remains a persistent issue. From the vast array of existing products, ceramics specifically Calcium sodium phosphosilicate (CSPS) based glasses seem to be the most versatile material to manage dentin hypersensitivity. Literature clearly indicates that Calcium sodium phosphosilicate (CSPS) permits a multitude of possibilities as it allows integration with soft and hard tissues. The ability to generate a flexible structure

[Dentin hypersensitivity and its treatment].

Nowadays, the occurrence of dentin hypersensitivity affects almost every person during their lifetime. Various stimuli – such as cold, heat, osmotic effects – can cause intense pain if the external structure of the tooth, enamel or cement layer are damaged or the anatomy of the enamel–cement border provides free dentin surface. Pain can trigger symptoms similar to tooth decay and its consequent diseases, so it is unclear to the patient what is causing the pain. The determination of dentin hypersensitivity is the task of the practising dentist. The prevention of the main root causes and the sol
