BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Child abuse has serious physical and psychosocial consequences which adversely affect the health and overall well-being of a child. However, in a developing country like India there has been no knowledge of the extent, magnitude and trends of the problem. This study reviews the overall scenario of child abuse in India as well as the role of the dentist in recognising and thereby combating this problem.

Canavan disease (CD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that occurs predominantly but not exclusively in Ashkenazi Jews. It is characterized by a normal birth, rapidly followed by signs of lack of interest, hypotonia, and megalencephaly, resulting in early death. Genetic studies suggest that among Ashkenazi Jews the carrier frequency is between 1/35 and 1/59. Dentists aware of CD can assist in the treatment of infants and children afflicted with this disorder. Early dental treatment may support parents and siblings in caring for the child with CD and help create good family dynamics.

The increase of international movements has led to a greater demand for forensic age estimation of foreigners without valid identification documents. Age estimation on living individuals is part of asylum and criminal proceedings. Age estimation has become also important within identification of victims, because of the fact of increasing natural disasters and events of terrorism. Therefore dentists are more and more appointed to this job. There are varieties of methods in age estimation. Dental examination and analysis of panoramic x-ray are usually used for dental age estimation.

A case report of an AIDS patient afflicted with disseminated histoplasmosis is presented. Characteristic granulomatous-appearing lesions on the tongue were observed during the patient's initial workup, but the patient became unavailable for a scheduled biopsy. Means to detect pemphigus vulgaris at an early stage are described. Its grave evolution in absence of treatment makes an early diagnosis imperative. The first signs are frequently localized in the oral mucosa and sometimes the disease remains confined to this mucosa only. Efficient and early therapy may favourably influence the course of disease, and the dentist is in a prime position to detect the characteristic lesions.

PURPOSE: The majority of suspected malignant changes in the oral mucosa are detected by dentists in private practice. Statements regarding the effectiveness of visual examination of the oral cavity for early detection are not necessarily transferable between different health care systems. Speech and language development is a useful indicator of a child's overall development and cognitive ability. Identification of children at a risk for developmental delay or related problems may lead to intervention and assistance at a young age, when the chances for improvement are the best. This rationale supports screening of preschool children for speech and language delay or primary language impairment or disorder, which needs to be integrated into routine developmental surveillance practices of clinicians caring for children.
