[Factors related to access to family dentists and regular dental checkups--results of oral health examination of an adult population].

In February 2000, we examined the oral health status of 578 government employees (males 408, females 170). We also asked them to complete questionnaires on oral health. The following results were obtained. Of the total sample, 39.2% had a family dentist. There were significantly more women, and older workers, who had a family dentist. The reasons to visit family dentists were "treatment (75.9%)," "prevention (14.4%)," and "regular checkups (8.8%)." Workers who had family dentists had more filled teeth and fewer present teeth than those without family dentists, and the difference was significan

Health and wellness for women in the profession.

Regardless of gender, dentists can and do experience illness and other problems that may disrupt or impair dental practice, including substance abuse involving alcohol and/or other drugs. As part of the ethical obligation to maintain public confidence through responsible and effective self-governance, the American Dental Association (ADA) and state dental components offer health and wellness resources to members through programs such as CDAD-Dentist Well-Being Committee. Though the percentage of women entering the dental profession has consistently increased, utilization of CDAD resources by f

The lives of female physicians.

Survey data from 113 female physicians, 634 male physicians, and 41 female dentists were compared. Instruments designed to assess work satisfaction, work stress, marital satisfaction, family competence, and psychiatric symptoms and treatment were used, thereby exploring important life domains concurrently. The results suggest that female physicians are much more like both male physicians and female dentists than anticipated. Generally, female physicians describe high levels of work satisfaction, moderate levels of work stress, average-to-high levels of marital satisfaction, and relatively low

History of Women in Dentistry.

Throughout history, women were systematically denied access to health education due to entrenched societal beliefs, economic gatekeeping, and fears of shifting gender dynamics. Medicine and dentistry were traditionally seen as male-dominated fields, with women expected to remain in domestic roles, and institutions reinforced their exclusion through religious, cultural, and academic barriers. Resistance to female dental practice and education persisted well into the 19th and 20th centuries, with pioneers like Josephine Serre, Lucy Hobbs Taylor, and Ida Gray and many others facing skepticism and

Knowledge of halitosis among dentists and dental hygienists.

Bad breath is a widespread condition that has been increasingly discussed among professionals and in the mass media in the last few years. In nine of ten cases, halitosis originates intraorally; hence it has become an important topic of study in the education and training of dentists and dental hygienists. However, the de facto knowledge of professionals has never been examined until today. 750 dentists and dental hygienists from Switzerland, Germany, and France were personally interviewed. Their knowledge of halitosis was assessed using a specifically designed questionnaire. In general, consi

Evaluating the head posture of dentists with no neck pain.

INTRODUCTION: Dentistry is one of the professions that requires a high degree of concentration during the treatment of patients. There are many predisposing factors, affecting dentists when working on the patient's teeth, including neck flexion, arm abduction and inflexible postural positions, which may put them at the risk of developing musculoskeletal disorders related to the neck. Although dentists with long records of service show different levels of pain and discomfort in their necks, there is no evidence regarding whether younger dentists report neck pain before the onset of an abnormal

[Legionellae in dental units--a hygienic risk?].

Water samples were collected from the hot water systems and from dental units in 12 dental offices of Dresden and cultured for legionellae. From seven (58%) hot water supplies and from dental units in 6 (50%) offices legionellae could be isolated. To asses the hygienic risk for dental staff we studied the prevalence of antibodies against Legionellae in serum samples of 113 dentists, 105 dental nurses and 17 dental technicians. In comparison with a control group of healthy people (132 women, 161 men, 20-80 years) living in the Dresden area, dentists have had a higher prevalence of antibodies ag

Knowledge of male and female midwestern college students about baby bottle tooth decay.

The purpose of this bellwether study was to establish the level of knowledge a group of young men and women college students had about baby bottle tooth decay (BBTD) and the associated risk factors. The results show that knowledge about BBTD is very limited even among a well-educated group of young adults. Overall 39% of the respondents had heard of BBTD whereas 87% had heard of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Thirty-two percent thought BBTD was a fictional (vs. "real" or "unsure") health problem, while 3% of the respondents thought SIDS was a fictional health problem. Knowledge about ove
