Assessment of orbital dystopia in patients with dentofacial deformity.

The study investigated vertical orbital dystopia in patients with dentofacial deformities and its impact on coronal plane orientation. This retrospective analysis included 79 patients (52 females, 27 males, mean age 27.64 years) with dentofacial deformity who underwent orthognathic surgery from 2019 to 2022 with preoperative cone-beam computed tomography. Bilateral hard tissue measurements were performed using virtual orthognathic planning software (NemoFAB, Nemotec, Spain). Two anatomical landmarks were measured vertically to assess the severity and direction of orbital asymmetry. Of the 79 p

3D analysis of dentofacial deformities: a new model for clinical application.

This article examines the application of 3D fusion of postoperative anatomy superimposed upon preoperative anatomy to evaluate the changes in soft tissues relative to fixed bony structures. The value of 3D analysis is to predict and quantitatively measure the soft tissue changes associated with skeletal orthognathic surgery. An example is shown of changes in the upper lip that occur after Le Fort I osteotomy, illustrating how these soft tissue changes can be measures with the 3D software. Uses and future applications of this technology are described.

Structural Patterns of the Mandibular Condyle in Facial Asymmetry and Dentofacial Deformities.

Facial asymmetry is defined as a clinical discrepancy between the 2 sides of the face and is considered multifactorial in origin. It may affect any facial region, although it is most frequently observed in the lower third of the face. In this context, the mandibular condyle represents a primary growth center whose variations in behavior may lead to changes in volume and morphology. The aim of this study was to analyze the morphologic characteristics of the mandibular condyle in subjects with facial asymmetry associated with sagittal class II deformity (AF-CII) and in subjects with facial asymm

Interdisciplinary Management of Dentofacial Deformity in Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthritis impacts mandibular growth and development. This can result in skeletal deformity, such as facial asymmetry and/or malocclusion asymmetry. This article reviews the unique properties of TMJ and dentofacial growth and development in the setting of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). Specific orthopedic/orthodontic and surgical management of children with JIA and TMJ arthritis is discussed. The importance of interdisciplinary collaboration is highlighted.

[Surgery first as an alternative approach in patients treated for dentofacial deformities].

Recently surgery first became more popular alternative for treatment of dentofacial deformities. In this approach treatment starts from orthognathic surgery. Immediately after othognathic surgery facial aesthetics and oral function are improved. Thus main complaints of the orthognathic patients are resolved early during treatment period. Indications for surgery first approach are wider than years ago and include: skeletal Class II and III malocclusion, skeletal open bite, bimaxillary protrusion, even cases with severe facial asymmetry are reported. The key point for gaining stable results and

Treatment guidelines for temporomandibular joint ankylosis with secondary dentofacial deformities in adults.

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis with secondary dentofacial deformities in adult patients is a severely disfiguring condition and surgical treatment of this disease remains a great clinical challenge. Treatment goals are to restore the joint function, to improve facial appearances and to correct malocclusion, as well as to re-establishing harmony among them. Currently, various surgical techniques, such as arthroplasty with or without interpositional material, orthognathic surgery, distraction osteogenesis, autologous bone or bone replacement materials graft and plastic surgery, have bee

Outcome measures of the surgery first approach for orthognathic correction of dentofacial deformities.

In the surgery-first approach (SFA), orthognathic surgery is performed without the need for presurgical orthodontic treatment. This study was aimed at assessing the treatment durations and occlusal outcomes for a consecutive cohort of patients, with a range of dentofacial deformities, who had completed orthognathic treatment using SFA. The duration of orthognathic treatment was measured. The overall change in occlusion, and the quality of the final occlusion, were evaluated using the patients' study casts. A single, independent, calibrated operator carried out the occlusal scores, using the va
