STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Removable partial dentures (RPDs) provide an important treatment option for replacing missing teeth, particularly for vulnerable populations. However, RPDs have been associated with damage to the remaining dentition, which can lead to treatment failure.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this retrospective clinical study was to investigate the failure rates of RPD treatments among patients at a state-sponsored dental school and identify factors contributing to these failures.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted using electronic health records (EHRs) from 4

In this study, the changes of masticatory performance of 30 cases (18 males, 12 females) wearing unilateral free-end removable partial dentures were studied before wearing, 1 week, 1 month and 3 months after wearing by using the light absorption method and peanuts as test food. The results showed: 1. The masticatory performance before wearing unilateral free-end removable partial denture was predominantly lower than that of normal control group. The more teeth lost, the lower unilateral masticatory performance was observed. When the number of lost teeth was few, patients compensated and mainta

PURPOSE: To investigate the association of removable partial denture (RPD)/complete denture (CD) and fixed partial denture (FPD) use with health-related quality of life (HRQoL), evaluated using the EuroQol 5-dimension, 5-level instrument (EQ-5D-5L) among older adults with tooth loss.
METHODS: Cross-sectional data from the 2022 Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study. Participants were classified as RPD/CD users, FPD users, or nonusers. Generalized linear regression models stratified by the number of teeth were used to explore the association of RPD/CD and FPD use with the HRQoL evaluated using

This clinical report summarizes a workflow that introduces two approaches for fabricating a metal framework removable partial denture for a marginal mandibulectomy patient. First, the pre-existing denture was adjusted according to the piezographic technique to determine the optimal configuration for adhering to the available denture space. Second, computer-aided design-computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) technology was used to fabricate a new removable partial denture by digitally scanning the oral condition and the well-adjusted denture and then using the obtained data to design and fabric

Digital workflows for removable partial dentures have enabled new machinable framework materials, including polyetheretherketone (PEEK). In addition, all denture components can be designed and manufactured digitally. Nonetheless, physical casts are still required for assembly of the components. The adoption of a cast-free fabrication procedure may enhance benefits, including a reduced number of procedures, faster processing, and reduced material waste. The purpose of this technical report was to demonstrate a workflow for the fabrication of a removable partial denture with a PEEK framework, mi

Nocturnal bruxing is a parafunctional activity of the masticatory system that may create problems for removable dental prosthesis (RDP) users. Such problems may include root fractures, increased mobility of abutment teeth, excessive wear of resin denture teeth, minor connector bending, or denture base cracking. This clinical report presents an occlusal device fabricated for an RDP patient. The device used existing ERA attachments for added retention designed with the intended purpose of protecting the definitive fixed and RDP from damage due to nocturnal bruxing activity and providing for even

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the use of removable partial dentures (RPDs) has an effect on long-term survival outcomes amongst partially edentulous adults.
METHODS: Data were extracted from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and linked to public-use mortality files for the period up to 2019. Partially edentulous adults with fewer than 20 teeth were included. RPD use and dentition status were determined by clinical examination. The cohort was propensity score weighted to create a sample which was balanced across 27 covariates (sociodemograph

Modern prosthodontic therapy must continue to address the inevitable consequence of tooth loss--that is, alveolar process atrophy. The use of removable partial dentures (RPDs) to treat partial edentia must rely, in part, on support from the ever-deteriorating edentulous ridges. Extension-base RPDs are particularly affected as the tissue-base relationship changes over time after extraction of the natural teeth. This article reviews the concept of observed changes in the residual edentulous alveolar ridge and conventional procedures used to compensate for this bone loss. Finally, a practical pro

Clinical practice of digital removable partial denture (RPD) has undergone two profound transformations, shifting from partial digital substitution to full-process digital intelligent empowerment. In the first transformation, the application of digital technology restructured the RPD clinical workflow and significantly improved the low efficiency and insufficient accuracy of traditional techniques. However, it has failed to fundamentally address issues such as efficient and scientific design as well as technological breakthroughs for better clinical outcomes. At present, artificial intelligenc

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Cobalt chromium molybdenum (Co-Cr-Mo) alloys have long been the material of choice for removable partial denture (RPD) frameworks because of their mechanical strength and rigidity. However, despite their clinical reliability, they are susceptible to corrosion in the oral environment, leading to ion release, discoloration, and biocompatibility concerns. The development of titanium alloys, particularly anodized Ti-6Al-4V, provides an opportunity to overcome these limitations through superior corrosion resistance, surface hydrophilicity, and enhanced esthetics achieved by in

Scleroderma is a chronic disease that has been associated with immune dysfunction. One of the oral manifestations is microsomia, a result of collagen deposition in the perioral issues. The complexity of treating these patients includes limited mouth opening ability, and difficulty inserting and removing dentures due to finger deformity. This article will describe an appliance specially designed especially for scleroderma patients, which facilitates treatment of the patient with removable partial dentures (RPD).

Complications occurred in a 41-year-old woman following an attempt to remove a partial denture by oesophagoscopy. These were: laceration of the oesophagus with subsequent mediastinitis, pneumothorax, and pneumopericardium. At a second oesophagoscopy the denture was removed from the oesophagus using a flexible hood. Following antibiotic treatment the patient recovered. In a 45-year-old man who had also swallowed a denture, the denture could not initially be localized. It was eventually recovered from the antrum using a flexible scope with a flexible hood. The patient was discharged from hospita

In children and young adults, traumatic dental injuries are common. Children's tooth loss is mostly caused by dentoalveolar trauma. Owing to anatomical variations and developmental phases, treating such injuries is difficult. Trauma to deciduous teeth might harm the permanent tooth beneath; however, trauma to permanent teeth can worsen their long-term outlook. An alveolar segment trauma may result in the irreversible loss of dental tissues, malalignment, and deformity. The periodontium and pulpal tissues suffer significant harm as a result of this. In the current case, there was a segmental co

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: When implants are incorporated into an existing partial removable dental prosthesis, the acrylic resin base can fracture. It is therefore essential to study the mechanical behavior of partial removable dental prostheses by using stress and deformation analysis.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of the occlusal rest position on the implant-assisted partial removable dental prosthesis by finite element analysis.
