Immediate postpartum mood assessment and postpartum depressive symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Negative affect (NA) and positive affect (PA) in the early postpartum period have been associated with postpartum depressive symptoms, but the exact relationship is not well understood. This study aimed to determine if NA and PA in the immediate postpartum period predicted postpartum depressive symptoms over and above well-established predictors (previous trauma, history of depression). METHODS: Participants were prospectively recruited from a Mother-Baby Unit at a large Midwestern academic medical center in the United States from April 2011 to April 2014. Participants (N=526) com

Effects of traditional practices in the postpartum period on postpartum depression.

In this descriptive study, our aim was to assess the effects of traditional practices on postpartum depression. The participants were 461 Muslim mothers with infants aged between 2 weeks and 12 months, without a history of postpartum depression or other psychiatric problems and capable of communicating fluently. The participants were volunteers and were recruited from family health centers in urban Turkey between January 15 and April 15, 2015. Data were collected in a single face-to-face interview with each participant. Mothers in the research locality frequently have recourse to traditional p

Breastfeeding interventions for preventing postpartum depression.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression is a debilitating mental health disorder, which occurs in approximately 6% to 13% of women who give birth in high-income countries. It is a cause of great suffering for women and can have long-term consequences for child development. Postpartum depression can also negatively influence breastfeeding duration and breastfeeding exclusivity (i.e. feeding the infant only breast milk). However, a positive early, and continued, breastfeeding experience may reduce the risk of having postpartum depression. Breastfeeding interventions that increase the duration and excl

Postpartum Depression and Its Biological Biomarkers.

A woman's life is significantly impacted by both pregnancy and childbirth. A woman's tasks and obligations undergo abrupt and significant adjustments as a result of having a child. As a result, the postpartum period is when a new mother is most likely to develop postpartum depression. It frequently has serious detrimental effects on the infant. Similar signs and risk factors can also be seen in non-postpartum depression. The main difference is that postpartum-specific factors, including biological and psychosocial ones, are what lead to postpartum depression. Among biological processes, inflam

A Comprehensive Review on Postpartum Depression.

One of the most common psychological effects following childbirth is postpartum depression. Postpartum depression (PPD) has a significant negative impact on the child's emotional, mental as well as intellectual development if left untreated, which can later have long-term complications. Later in life, it also results in the mother developing obsessive-compulsive disorder and anxiety. Many psychological risk factors are linked with PPD. The pathophysiology of the development of PPD is explained by different models like biological, psychological, integrated, and evolutionary models, which relate

Antenatal thyroid correlates of postpartum depression.

We previously found significantly higher T3-resin uptake and nearly significantly lower total thyroxine concentrations at 38 weeks of pregnancy in women with higher postpartum depression ratings. This study further examined the relationship between thyroid status during late pregnancy and antenatal and postpartum depression scores. Thyroid measures were obtained at 32-35, 36, and 37 weeks of pregnancy in 31 women with normal range thyroid hormone levels. Subjects rated their mood at these antenatal time points and every other week between postpartum weeks 2 and 24 on the Edinburgh Postnatal De

Childhood abuse, parenting and postpartum depression.

OBJECTIVE: While the potential negative effects on children of maternal depression has been documented, the influence of a maternal history of childhood abuse on child development is unclear. This study, the first stage of a 3-year follow-up study, looks at childhood abuse in women with depression in the postpartum period. METHOD: Fifty-six women admitted with postpartum depressive disorders were assessed with respect to their wellbeing, relationships and infant interaction. Twenty-eight women had a history of sexual abuse before the age of 16, nine physical/emotional abuse and 19 had no hist

Investigating the Correlation Between Postpartum Management Approaches and Postpartum Depression Symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression is a leading public health issue of current international concern. With the change in the concept of postpartum health care, the adjustment of fertility policies, and government support, new postpartum management methods such as maternity matrons and postpartum management centers are becoming increasingly popular. Therefore, the aim of this study is to explore the correlation between postpartum management approaches and postpartum depression symptoms. METHODS: This study recruited 450 postpartum women who gave birth at the Yongkang Women and Children's Health

An Autoethnographic Examination of Postpartum Depression.

PURPOSE: This article examines postpartum depression (PPD) using autoethnography to explore the stigmatization of depression and cultural expectations of motherhood. Because the personal experiences of living with PPD are often absent from primary care literature, this article uses first-person narrative and analysis of intensive mothering to explore the barriers to seeking PPD treatment, the need for increasing physician confidence and comfort using screening tools, and the impact PPD stigma has on patients and their health care. METHODS: Autoethnography, as a relatively unfamiliar methodolo

Nutrition and the psychoneuroimmunology of postpartum depression.

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a relatively common and often severe mood disorder that develops in women after childbirth. The aetiology of PPD is unclear, although there is emerging evidence to suggest a psychoneuroimmune connection. Additionally, deficiencies in n-3 PUFA, B vitamins, vitamin D and trace minerals have been implicated. This paper reviews evidence for a link between micronutrient status and PPD, analysing the potential contribution of each micronutrient to psychoneuroimmunological mechanisms of PPD. Articles related to PPD and women's levels of n-3 PUFA, B vitamins, vitamin D a
