Depressive and anxiety disorder comorbidity in obsessive compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Depressive and other anxiety disorders are commonly found to coexist with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Although western studies have looked at this issue, there are no reports from India investigating anxiety and depressive comorbidity in adult OCD. METHODS: Between January and December 2001, charts of 218 OCD patients seen in the OCD clinic at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, Bangalore, were evaluated using the OPCRIT criteria for ICD-10 for the presence of comorbid depressive and anxiety disorders. RESULTS: There were 146 males and 72 females;

Neuroimaging biomarkers distinguishing medication-naïve adolescents with major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder during depressive episodes.

BACKGROUND: The adolescent period represents a critical window of heightened vulnerability for the onset of major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD). Nevertheless, the neuro-metabolic abnormalities in adolescents with MDD and BD remain incompletely understood, and the early differentiation between MDD and BD in depressive episodes continues to pose significant clinical challenges. METHOD: This study involved the recruitment of 60 adolescent MDD, 50 adolescent BD patients in depressed episodes, and 48 demographically matched healthy controls (HCs). Proton magnetic resonance sp

Comparing the phenomenology of depressive episodes in bipolar I and II disorder and major depressive disorder within bipolar disorder pedigrees.

OBJECTIVE: In a prior study of bipolar disorder pedigrees, we demonstrated distinct clinical differences between depressive episodes in bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder (MDD), including differentiation between these conditions using the Probabilistic Approach to Bipolar Depression. The aim of this retrospective study was to compare the phenomenology of the most severe lifetime depressive episodes between bipolar I (BP-I) and II (BP-II) disorder subtypes and MDD in these pedigrees. METHOD: Patients with DSM-IV diagnoses of BP-I (n = 202), BP-II (n = 44), and MDD (n = 120) from bi

Depressive Disorder and Dermatological Autoimmune Diseases.

Depressive disorders are a growing problem worldwide. They are also characterized by high comorbidity, including from the circle of dermatological diseases. Autoimmune diseases seem to be particularly correlated with depressive comorbidity, raising the question of their possible common pathomechanism. The PubMed database was searched, focusing on results published after 2016. A particular reciprocal correlation of depressive disorders with psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, alopecia areata, impetigo, lupus and systemic scleroderma was found. One possible explanation for the co-occurrence of the abo

Endocrinological Treatment Targets for Depressive Disorder.

Depressive disorder exhibits heterogeneity in clinical presentation, progression, and treatment outcomes. While conventional antidepressants based on the monoamine hypothesis benefit many patients, a significant proportion remains unresponsive or fails to fully recover. An individualized integrative treatment approach, considering diverse pathophysiologies, holds promise for these individuals. The endocrine system, governing physiological regulation and organ homeostasis, plays a pivotal role in central nervous system functions. Dysregulations in endocrine system are major cause of depressive

Alcohol Use Disorder and Depressive Disorders.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) and depressive disorders are among the most prevalent psychiatric disorders and co-occur more often than expected by chance. The aim of this review is to characterize the prevalence, course, and treatment of co-occurring AUD and depressive disorders. Studies have indicated that the co-occurrence of AUD and depressive disorders is associated with greater severity and worse prognosis for both disorders. Both pharmacologic and behavioral treatments have demonstrated efficacy for this population. However, treatment response is somewhat modest, particularly for drinking o

Glutamate metabolism in major depressive disorder.

Research on novel treatments for major depressive disorder focuses quite deeply on glutamate function, and this research would benefit from a brain-imaging technique that precisely quantified glutamate function. Signs of a specific form of glutamate-related dysfunction that could be targeted by novel therapies were found using novel, state-of-the-art techniques to address this issue.

Depressive personality disorder: a critical overview.

Depressive personality disorder (DPD), which has a long tradition in psychiatry, currently resides in Appendix B ("Disorders for Further Study") of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition. After a brief outline of this history, the authors review empirical research on DPD using the Robins and Guze criteria (discussed later) for diagnostic and clinical validity as a framework. Although DPD has unique features, the authors argue that this diagnosis can largely be subsumed under dysthymic disorder. As a result of diagnostic confusion, and of the small amount of r

Advances in understanding major depressive disorder.

1. Major depressive disorder is recognized by different, frequently recurring patterns of signs and symptoms that are suggestive of specific subtypes of the disorder, including melancholic, atypical, and psychotic. 2. MDD occurs at younger ages, twice as frequently in women, in conjunction with other psychiatric disorders, in persons with a family history of mood disorders, and is associated with high use of medical services. 3. Research on the biological basis of depression has focused on neurotransmission, neuroendocrine dysregulation, and genetic transmission. 4. Advances in understanding M

Major depressive disorder in detention officers.

OBJECTIVE: To identify factors associated with major depressive disorder (MDD) in detention officers. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included all detention officers from the largest prison complex in the state of Bahia, Brazil. A self-reported questionnaire collected sociodemographic, occupational and health data. The outcome variable - MDD - was evaluated by the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and classified by the cut-off point ≥ 10 method and the algorithm method. The association measure used was the prevalence ratio (PR). Following Cox multivariate regression, the variables we

Standardized Treatment Strategy for Depressive Disorder.

The treatment strategies of depressive disorder include pharmacological treatment, psychotherapy, and physical therapy (electroconvulsive therapy [ECT], transcranial magnetic stimulation [TMS], etc.). The updated CANMAT guidelines recommended the most second-generation antidepressants as first-line treatments for patients with a major depressive disorder (MDD) of moderate or greater severity. Before antidepressant treatment, comprehensive assessment and safety monitoring are necessary. The application of measurement-based care in the diagnosis and treatment of depression would better ensure th

Optimized Treatment Strategy for Depressive Disorder.

Despite many advances in pharmacotherapy over the past half centurye, only a fraction of patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) can achieve remission after the first or second trial of pharmacotherapy. Those who failed standard antidepressant treatment are termed as Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD). Pharmacotherapy for TRD is more viable over past 15 years in part due to advances in clinical trials such as the Sequenced Treatment Alternatives to Relieve Depression (STAR*D) and the US Department of Veterans Affairs Augmentation and Switching Treatments for Improving Depression Outcom

Individualized Treatment Strategy for Depressive Disorder.

The goal of treatment for depressive disorders is complete remission of depressive symptoms with full recovery of social function and prevention of recurrence. However, a large proportion of patients do not experience symptomatic remission after the initial treatment, with even lower rates of remission in the longer treatment term. The main objective of individualized treatment applied in psychiatry is to improve precision in disease diagnosis, prognosis, treatment choices, and treatment response. Diverse approaches and techniques, such as genomics, epigenomics, other omics, neural circuit, an

Cognitive impairment in major depressive disorder.

Cognitive dysfunction is a symptomatic domain identified across many mental disorders. Cognitive deficits in individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) contribute significantly to occupational and functional disability. Notably, cognitive subdomains such as learning and memory, executive functioning, processing speed, and attention and concentration are significantly impaired during, and between, episodes in individuals with MDD. Most antidepressants have not been developed and/or evaluated for their ability to directly and independently ameliorate cognitive deficits. Multiple interactin

Thalamocortical connectivity in major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is highly prevalent and potentially devastating, with widespread aberrations in brain activity. Thalamocortical networks are a potential candidate marker for psychopathology in MDD, but have not yet been thoroughly investigated. Here we examined functional connectivity between major cortical areas and thalamus. METHOD: Resting-state fMRI from 54 MDD patients and 40 healthy controls were collected. The cortex was segmented into six regions of interest (ROIs) consisting of frontal, temporal, parietal, and occipital lobes and pre-central and post-centr

Autobiographical memories in major depressive disorder.

The objective of this research was to study the relation between the processing and recall of information in major depressive disorder. An autobiographical memory task was applied to 42 subjects with a diagnosis of major depressive disorder, 28 subjects with a diagnosis of panic disorder and 51 subjects without any psychological disorder. We used clinical scales for the evaluation of depression and anxiety. The results of the three groups, and both assessment periods of depressed subjects, were compared. The results indicate the existence, in severely depressed subjects, of a bias in processin

Inflammatory mechanisms in major depressive disorder.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: As the 'monoamine hypothesis of depression' fails to explain all aspects of major depression, additional causes are being investigated. Several observations suggest that inflammatory mechanisms pay a role in the cause of major depressive disorder (MDD). This article reviews their role in major depression. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent studies support the concept that inflammatory mechanisms play a crucial role in the pathomechanisms of major depression. Major depression shares similarities with 'sickness behavior', a normal response to inflammatory cytokines. Elevations in proinf

Affect regulation and Depressive Personality Disorder.

Depressive Personality Disorder (DPD) has been under consideration for inclusion in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders since 1994; yet, few studies have been published that test whether those with DPD have affective experiences that are characterized exclusively by depression and negative affect. One hundred ninety-seven undergraduate students were interviewed for DPD and Borderline Personality Disorder with the Personality Disorder Interview for DSM-IV (Widiger, Mangine, Corbitt, Ellis, & Thomas, 1995), in order to control for frequently co-occurring BPD which is charac
