Scene-relative object motion biases depth percepts.

An important function of the visual system is to represent 3D scene structure from a sequence of 2D images projected onto the retinae. During observer translation, the relative image motion of stationary objects at different distances (motion parallax) provides potent depth information. However, if an object moves relative to the scene, this complicates the computation of depth from motion parallax since there will be an additional component of image motion related to scene-relative object motion. To correctly compute depth from motion parallax, only the component of image motion caused by sel

Visual Perception: Monovision Can Bias the Apparent Depth of Moving Objects.

'Monovision' - using one eye for near work and one for distance - is a common alternative to reading glasses. New work shows that monovision can cause the distance of moving objects to be misestimated, with potentially serious consequences.

Effects of insertion depth of cochlear implant electrodes upon speech perception.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the insertion depth of a cochlear implant array affects postoperative speech perception. DESIGN: The subjects were 48 postlingually deaf adults who received either the Nucleus 22 or the Nucleus 24 cochlear implant with a straight array. A postoperative radiograph of the cochlear electrode was used to estimate insertion depth, as either the angle of the electrode tip (angle) or the intracochlear length of the electrode (length). Other estimates of insertion depth included the numbers of active electrodes and channels used by the speech processor. Electrode dep

Clinicopathological correlations of visual depth perception in patients with cerebrovascular disease.

Visual depth perception in 100 patients with cerebrovascular disease was evaluated using the Titumus stereotest. Twelve patients showed depth perception impairment. CT scans revealed that the lesion was located on the right hemisphere in 6 patients and on the left hemisphere in 3 patients, and that the remaining 3 patients had multiple infarctions. 123I SPECT was performed in 7 patients with moderate to severe depth perception impairment, of whom 6 patients showed a reduced blood flow in the posterior half of both the right and left cerebral hemispheres. Moderate to severe impairment of depth

Depth perception and cortical physiology in normal and innate microstrabismic cats.

Evidence is presented that innate microstrabismus and abnormal cortical visual receptive-field properties can occur also in cats without any apparent involvement of the Siamese or albino genetic abnormalities in their visual system. A possible cause for microstrabismus in these cats may be sought in an abnormally large horizontal distance between blind spot and area centralis indicated by a temporal displacement of the most central receptive fields on both retinae. Depth perception was found to be impaired in cats with innate microstrabismus. Behavioral measurements using a Y-maze revealed in

DEPTH PERCEPTION IN SHEEP: EFFECTS OF INTERRUPTING THE MOTHER-NEONATE BOND.

Twin lambs were divided into two groups: an unmothered group consisting of one of each pair of twins separated from its mother at birth, and a mothered group consisting of the other member of each pair reared by its mother. Lambs in both groups were placed individually on a "visual cliff" once every hour. In all instances lambs in the mothered group exhibited "cliff avoidance" behavior before those in the unmothered group. In another experiment, mothered lambs were fitted with translucent goggles for half the time required by unmothered lambs, matched on the basis of sex and birth weight, to a

Depth Perception and Intraocular Differences in Visual Acuities Among Older Spectacle Wearers.

BACKGROUND: Falls impose a heavy financial burden on society, and the incidence is age-related. The correction of refractive errors has been mooted as a valuable procedure to prevent falls. However, depth perception, estimated by stereo acuity tests, is reduced in the older population and has been cited as contributing to the higher incidence of falls in the elderly. OBJECTIVE: To explore the clinical relationship between age, interocular differences in the corrected distance and near logMAR visual acuities, refractive errors, axial (eyeball) lengths, pupil sizes, and higher-order ocular aber

Using Functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) to Study Dynamic Stereoscopic Depth Perception.

The parietal cortex has been widely implicated in the processing of depth perception by many neuroimaging studies, yet functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) has been an under-utilised tool to examine the relationship of oxy- ([HbO]) and de-oxyhaemoglobin ([HbR]) in perception. Here we examine the haemodynamic response (HDR) to the processing of induced depth stimulation using dynamic random-dot-stereograms (RDS). We used fNIRS to measure the HDR associated with depth perception in healthy young adults (n = 13, mean age 24). Using a blocked design, absolute values of [HbO] and [HbR] wer

Visual depth perception in normal and deprived rats: effects of environmental enrichment.

A proper maturation of stereoscopic functions requires binocular visual experience and early disruption of sensory-driven activity can result in long-term or even permanent visual function impairment. Amblyopia is one paradigmatic case of visual system disorder, with early conditions of functional imbalance between the two eyes leading to severe deficits of visual acuity and depth-perception abilities. In parallel to the reduction of neural plasticity levels, the brain potential for functional recovery declines with age. Recent evidence has challenged this traditional view and experimental par

The cerebral activity related to the visual perception of forward motion in depth.

We have used the technique of PET to chart the areas of human cerebral cortex specifically responsive to an optical flow stimulus simulating forward motion in depth over a flat horizontal surface. The optical flow display contained about 2000 dots accelerating in radial directions away from the focus of expansion, which subjects fixated at the centre of the display monitor. Dots remained of constant size, but their density decreased from the horizon, lying across the middle of the screen, to the foreground at the lower screen margin; the top half of the display was void. For the control stimul

Paradoxical fusion of two images and depth perception with a squinting eye.

Some strabismic patients with inconstant squint can fuse two images in a single eye, and experience lustre and depth. One of these images is foveal and the other extrafoveal. Depth perception was tested on 30 such subjects. Relief was perceived mostly on the fixated image. Camouflaged continuous surfaces (hemispheres, cylinders) were perceived as bumps or hollows, without detail. Camouflaged rectangles could not be separated in depth from the background, while their explicit counterparts could. Slanted bars were mostly interpreted as frontoparallel near or remote bars. Depth responses were mor

Assessment of depth perception using psychophysical thresholds and stereoscopically evoked brain activity.

Dynamic random-dot stereograms (dRDS) elicit brain activity generated exclusively by cortical neurons sensitive to binocular horizontal disparity. We studied 20 adults with stereovision deficiency but otherwise normal vision. Psychophysical thresholds were determined with static RDS and with the three-rod experiment. VEP was recorded from seven occipital channels. Stimuli were presented on a monitor by dRDS as stereoscopic checkerboard patterns that moved in depth with 8 depth reversals per second. Horizontal disparity ranged from 7 to 24.5 min of arc. Stimuli were displayed at the center, or

Absence of compensation and reasoning-like processes in the perception of orientation in depth.

When errors are present in the perceived depth between the parts of a physically stationary object, the object appears to rotate as the head is moved laterally (Gogel, 1980). This illusory rotation has been attributed either to compensation (Wallach, 1985, 1987) or to inferential-like processes (Rock, 1983). Alternatively, the perceived distances of and directions to the parts of the object are sufficient to explain the illusory perceived orientations and perceived rotations of the stimulus. This was examined in three experiments. In Experiment 1, a perceived illusory orientation of a stimulus

tDCS recovers depth perception in adult amblyopic rats and reorganizes visual cortex activity.

Amblyopia or lazy eye is a neurodevelopmental disorder that arises during the infancy and is caused by the interruption of binocular sensory activity before maturation of the nervous system. This impairment causes long-term deterioration of visual skills, particularly visual acuity and depth perception. Although visual function recovery has been supposed to be decreased with age as consequence of reduced neuronal plasticity, recent studies have shown that it is possible to promote plasticity and neurorestoration in the adult brain. Thus, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been

Influence of Multi-Cue Interaction on Human Depth Perception in Three-Dimensional Space.

BACKGROUND: With the widespread application of three-dimensional (3D) display technology, enhancing the realism of users' experience in virtual 3D space has become important. A deep understanding of the mechanisms of human depth perception is therefore crucial. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the influence of motion parallax, color, and object position cues on depth perception in 3D space. METHOD: Random-dot stereograms based on binocular disparity cues were constructed; three experiments were designed, varying the stimulus movement speed, color, and position; two-alternative force

Enhanced distance perception in automated robotic endoscopy through scale-aware monocular depth estimation.

PURPOSE: The increasing demand for distance perception in surgical robotic systems is crucial for ensuring safe and effective operations in minimally invasive procedures. Accurate distance awareness allows surgical robots to autonomously navigate complex anatomical structures, particularly in endoscopic environments with limited visual feedback. Existing distance estimation methods often rely on expensive sensors that can pose safety risks and are ineffective under these conditions. To address this challenge, this work develops a monocular image-based framework leveraging geometric modeling an

Playing stereoscopic video games enhances the precision but not the accuracy of depth perception.

Playing three-dimensional (3D) video games enhances stereo acuity (i.e., the precision of stereopsis) in young adults with normal vision Here we asked whether the improvement in stereoacuity was the result of a reduced disparity pedestal, as indicated by a decreased subjective depth bias (i.e., the accuracy of stereopsis). Twenty-one healthy young participants with normal vision and limited previous video game experience, none had played 3D video games, played first-person-shooter action stereoscopic 3D video games for a total of 40 h. Depth detection performance was measured using random dot

The role of figure orientation and apparent depth in the perception of the horizontal-vertical illusion.

An experiment was performed which examined the role of figural orientation directly, and the role of an inappropriately invoked size-constancy mechanism indirectly, in the actuation and magnitude of the horizontal-vertical illusion. When the vertical line of the stimulus figure was aligned above the horizontal line, the illusory effect was significant and positive; in contrast, when the vertical line was located below the horizontal line, the illusion was negative. Under the assumption that a vertical line can appear as a foreshortened line in depth, these findings support an explanation based
