[The change of dermatophyte spectrum in dermatomycoses].

The spectrum of dermatophytes out of mycotic skin lesions had changed in last 70 years. Before the Second World War in Germany Microsporum audouinii and Epidermophyton floccosum held the first position, since the fifties of last century Trichophyton rubrum is the most frequently isolated dermatophyte accounting for 80-90% of the strains, followed by T. mentagrophytes. This development is typical for Central and North Europe and is connected with the increase in the incidence of tinea pedis. In contrast to this, in Southern Europe and in Arab countries zoophilic dermatophytes, such as M. canis

[Allergic phenomena in the course of dermatomycoses].

Fungi, well known as infectious factors so far, are important allergens too. A fungal id reaction is defined as a distant skin manifestation of an established fungal infection. The most typical setting is in association with tinea of the feet. The main id reactions are well established. A widespread lichen trichophyticus--eruption of small follicular papules grouped or diffuse. The eruption is symmetrical, usually pronounced on the trunk but in severe cases extending down to the lower limbs, even sometimes involving the face. The common cause of this type of id reaction is scalp ringworm of ke

An epidemiological study of animals dermatomycoses in Iran.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the fungal species isolated from skin lesions of different animals suspected of having dermatomycoses and their prevalence in different regions of Iran. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 1011 animals (292 dogs, 229 cats, 168 horses, 100 camels, 98 cows, 60 squirrels, 37 birds, 15 sheep, 6 goats, 5 rabbits and 1 fox) suspected of having dermatomycoses were examined. The samples were obtained by plucking the hairs and feathers with forceps around the affected area and scraping the epidermal scales with a sterile scalpel blade. All collected samples were analyzed by direc

[New apects in the diagnosis and therapy of dermatomycoses].

Recent observations indicate that Arthroderma benhamiae can cause bullous tinea, that onychomycosis increasingly occurs in children and that molds can cause tinea-like lesions. If a mycotic infection is suspected, the pathogen needs to be identified. The first genetic assays for the detection of dermatophytes have successfully been tested under routine conditions. Using appropriate techniques, genetic diagnosis is faster and more sensitive than a culture. Laboratory standards that would facilitate widespread implementation of genetic identification of dermatophytes have not yet been establishe

[A fatal case of dermatomycoses with retropharyngeal abscess].

BACKGROUND: Dermatophytic disease is a rare chronic infection caused by dermatophytes and characterised by cutaneous and visceral invasion. It is observed in North Africa. It is associated with cellular immunodeficiency and refractoriness to drug treatment. CASE REPORT: We report a new case of dermatophytic disease in a 26-year-old Tunisian woman. The patient's parents were first cousins; no other family members had a similar disease state. At the age of 3 years, the patient developed extensive tinea corporis associated with onychomycosis resistant to the usual antifungal drugs. The patient w

Treatment of dermatomycoses and onychomycoses--state of the art.

We have reached a stage whereby many of the superficial mycoses are treatable with short courses of antifungal drugs. However, the minimum duration of therapy has still not been well defined and there remain some mycoses which do not respond to conventional therapy. It may be possible to introduce more radical approaches to therapy such as the single-dose oral or topical therapy for tinea pedis or short-duration therapy for onychomycosis. Amongst these options, topical therapies still have a part to play in the management of onychomycosis, and the role of amorolfine in this respect is of poten

Epidemiology and clinical features of dermatomycoses and dermatophytoses.

Dermatophytosis, candidosis and pityriasis versicolor account for the majority of fungal skin diseases in Denmark and are seen in 8% of patients with dermato-venerological problems. In children, zoophilic species like Microsporum canis (from cats), Trichophyton (T) verrucosum (from cattle) and T. mentagrophytes granulare (from rodents) are the common causes of dermatophytosis and are seen in approximately 15% of all cases. Anthropophilic species are the main cause of dermatophytosis in adults and are isolated more often in males than in females. T. rubrum (48%), T. mentagrophytes interdigitale
