Effects of sevoflurane and desflurane on otoacoustic emissions in humans.

Otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) are non-invasive, easy to apply and objective test methods which are widely used to determine the presence of hearing in audiology clinics. Under certain circumstances, the study should be applied under general anesthesia. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of new short-acting inhalation agents, desflurane and sevoflurane, on OAE in humans. These short-acting agents are widely used in general anesthesia. Thirty-one healthy patients who underwent septoplasty and turbinoplasty surgery were included in this study. Unpremedicated patients were anesthe

Effect of desflurane anesthesia on transcortical motor evoked potentials.

The effect of the volatile anesthetic desflurane on motor evoked potentials was examined in male rats. Animals underwent cortical stimulation using small platinum ball stimulating electrodes secured on the motor cortex. To record evoked compound muscle action potentials (CMAPs), single-shock electrical stimulation was delivered to the forelimb representation of the motor cortex. Muscle responses were readily obtained in the contralateral extensor muscles. The effect of desflurane was examined at various concentrations ranging from 0.7 to 11.4%. With increasing concentrations of desflurane, the

Interventions to reduce desflurane use in hospitals: A systematic review.

Desflurane is a potent greenhouse gas (GHG) and major contributor to healthcare carbon emissions. Clinician-led interventions to reduce its use have been implemented, but their effectiveness has not been systematically reviewed. We aimed to synthesise available evidence on the effectiveness of hospital-based interventions designed to reduce desflurane use. Four databases were searched from inception to 3 July 2025. Randomised and non-randomised controlled trials (RCTs), interrupted time series (ITS) and controlled or uncontrolled before-and-after studies were included. Outcome measures were de

Environmental and clinical rationale for the use of desflurane: a review of the literature.

Desflurane is a fluorinated ether anesthetic with several clinical benefits, including resistance to defluorination (reducing nephrotoxicity), rapid emergence, cardioprotective properties, and faster recovery of airway reflexes than other volatile agents. However, its use is increasingly restricted because of environmental concerns, and the European Union has finalized regulations to phase out its use from January 2026, citing its global warming potential. Although its 100-year global warming potential exceeds that of comparable agents, the most appropriate emission metric remains debated. Rad

Desflurane and sevoflurane elimination kinetics and recovery quality in horses.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate pharmacokinetics, recovery times, and recovery quality in horses anesthetized with 1.2 times the minimum alveolar concentration of sevoflurane or desflurane. ANIMALS: 6 healthy adult horses. PROCEDURES: Anesthesia was maintained with sevoflurane or desflurane for 2 hours at 1.2 times the minimum alveolar concentration. Horses recovered without assistance. During recovery, end-tidal gas samples were collected until horses spontaneously moved. Anesthetic concentrations were measured by use of gas chromatography. After a 1-week washout period, horses were anesthetized wit

Halothane and desflurane requirements in alcohol-tolerant and -nontolerant rats.

On the basis of data implicating GABAA receptors in the effects of volatile general anaesthetics, we hypothesized that alcohol-, barbiturate-, and benzodiazepine-sensitive alcohol-nontolerant (ANT) rats would also be more sensitive than alcohol-tolerant (AT) rats to two clinical general anaesthetics with differing potencies, halothane and desflurane. The obtunding effect of halothane and desflurane on mature ANT (n = 17) and AT (n = 16) rats was assessed by the loss-of-righting reflex endpoint. ANT rats were significantly (P < 0.0001) more sensitive to the obtunding effects of both halothane a

Vagally mediated sympathoexcitation and central depression by desflurane in rabbits.

The effects of desflurane on renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) were studied in intact or vagotomized anaesthetized rabbits with initial concentrations of 4.5-18%, subsequently equilibrated to end-tidal concentrations from 3%, 6%, 9% and 12% each for 20 min allowing sympathetic activity to stabilize. In intact animals, immediate transient increases in mean sympathetic activity from 27% to 63% were closely related to initial concentrations from 4.5% to 18%. During subsequent equilibration this remained elevated by 25-30% up to 6%, returned to control at 9% and fell by 33% at 12%. Bilateral

Desflurane and nitrous oxide, but not nonimmobilizers, affect nociceptive responses.

UNLABELLED: Nonimmobilizers (previously called nonanesthetics) do not prevent movement in response to a noxious stimulus, even at doses predicted to produce anesthesia. We hypothesized they would also lack antinociceptive effects. We tested this prediction using the tail-flick latency (TFL) test. As predicted, the two nonimmobilizers tested (1,2-dichlorohexafluorocyclobutane and perfluoropentane) did not alter TFL, whereas desflurane and nitrous oxide both lengthened TFL (nitrous oxide at a lower minimum alveolar anesthetic concentration [MAC]-multiple than desflurane). In addition, we found t

Implications of chemical and physical properties of desflurane for longer surgery.

Increased duration of anaesthetic administration has implications for recovery from anaesthesia, has cardiovascular effects, and potential for toxicity through metabolism and breakdown of the anaesthetics. Recovery of function after desflurane or sevoflurane anaesthesia, because of the low blood gas and tissue solubilities of these agents, is more rapid than after halothane, isoflurane or enflurane, with recovery being most rapid after desflurane. Increased duration of anaesthesia amplifies the differences in rate of recovery because of the additional anaesthetic (greater with more soluble age

Desflurane's climate burden and the PFAS legacy of volatile anaesthetics.

Efforts to reduce the environmental footprint of anaesthesia have focused predominantly on greenhouse gas emissions, with desflurane widely recognised as an extreme climate outlier. In Australia, desflurane accounts for approximately 3% of volatile anaesthetic cases yet contributes nearly 60% of volatile anaesthetic-related greenhouse gas emissions, making its phase-out one of the most effective mitigation measures immediately available to anaesthetists. However, climate forcing represents only one dimension of the environmental burden of volatile anaesthesia. All fluorinated volatile anaesthe

Abandoning desflurane is just part of the solution to anaesthesia sustainability.

Eliminating desflurane in anaesthesia practice contributes to a significant savings of carbon dioxide emissions. Seibold and colleagues evaluated the carbon footprint of a step-wise approach to eliminating desflurane over an 8-year period in their retrospective cohort study using individual patient data. They also explored the wide variability in individual providers' likelihood of having high carbon dioxide emissions in their patients. Although desflurane is an important source of contribution to carbon footprint in healthcare, many sustainable anaesthesia practices are also very important, w

Desflurane: a clinical update of a third-generation inhaled anaesthetic.

Available volatile anaesthetics are safe and efficacious; however, their varying pharmacology provides small but potentially clinically important differences. Desflurane is one of the third-generation inhaled anaesthetics. It is the halogenated inhaled anaesthetic with the lowest blood and tissue solubilities, which promotes its rapid equilibration and its rapid elimination following cessation of administration at the end of anaesthesia. The low fat solubility of desflurane provides pharmacological benefits, especially in overweight patients and in longer procedures by reducing slow compartmen
