A desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) presented in a 13-year-old female with an acute abdomen due to torsion of a fallopian tube cyst. She was found to have an incidental 2 cm pedunculated, solid, and multicystic mass attached to the pelvic floor on laparoscopy. The neoplasm had a variably myxoid and spindle cell pattern with nests and cords of small cells, forming pseudocysts, and true cysts lined by ciliated epithelium which were PAX-8+ and ER+/PR+. The tumor had the EWSR1::WT1 fusion. Numerous peritoneal nodules less than 1 cm were noted on repeat laparoscopy 3 months later. These h

Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a rare and aggressive neoplasm that predominantly affects young men. DSRCT often presents as multiple nodules on the serosal surface and is histologically categorized as a small round cell tumor. However, the cytological spectrum of DSRCT is not fully understood because of its rarity. Here, we report an unusual case of DSRCT that showed spheres of cells without stromal cores in pleural fluid cytology material, a finding that is typically associated with metastatic adenocarcinoma and mesothelioma. The specimen from a simultaneous needle biopsy show

Desmoplastic small round cell tumors (DSRCTs) are rare, aggressive neoplasms that typically arise from abdominal and pelvic peritoneum in young adults. Other primary sites are uncommon, and an intracranial origin is exceptionally rare. Here the authors report the first case of a DSRCT presenting as a primary suprasellar tumor causing panhypopituitarism and severe bitemporal hemianopia in a young man. Macroscopic debulking of the tumor was undertaken, and histology revealed features of DSRCT. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction confirmed the presence of Ewing's sarcoma-Wilms tumor 1

Desmoplastic small round cell tumors (DSRCTs) present a reciprocal chromosomal translocation, t(11;22)(p13;q12), that results in fusion of Ewing's sarcoma and Wilms' tumor (WT1) genes. The authors evaluated 15 DSRCTs and 71 other tumors often considered in the differential diagnosis for immunoreactivity using a polyclonal antibody directed against the WT1 part of the chimeric protein resulting from this translocation. WT1 immunostaining was performed on paraffin material using the WT(C-19) antibody after heat-antigen retrieval. All the DSRCTs (15 of 15, 100%) demonstrated strong WT1 nuclear im

BACKGROUND: Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a rare, aggressive, mesenchymal malignancy of a separate clinicopathological entity. It has a predilection for young men, with no evidence of any ethnic predilection. The current diagnostic gold standard for DSRCT includes histopathologic, immunohistochemical, and cytogenetic studies in order to confirm the variable phenotypic expression and characteristic chromosomal translocation.
CASE SUMMARY: A 65-year-old man presented with a sensation of an abdominal mass and a presentation of an incomplete bowel obstruction. Initial lab tests w

Intraabdominal desmoplastic small round cell tumor (IDSRCT) is a rare tumor with poor prognosis that usually develops in the peritoneal cavity, often in childhood and adolescence. This tumor typically arises as single or multiple masses, and is characterized by diffuse peritoneal implants and the involvement of regional lymph nodes. Because most patients are unable to achieve a complete response with chemotherapy alone, extensive efforts have been made to develop more effective chemotherapy regimens. Here, we report on a case of IDSRCT in a 33-year-old man treated with ifosfamide (IFM)-based c

Intra-abdominal desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a recently described, rare neoplasm that usually occurs in male adolescents, has a poor prognosis, and displays a typical clinicopathological profile. This aggressive neoplasm exhibits a predominantly intra-abdominal serosal pattern, with frequent pelvic extension, less frequent retroperitoneal involvement, and rare pulmonary and mediastinal spread. We report on the autopsy findings of a 9-year-old male who presented with a biopsy-proven DSRCT involving the abdomen, retroperitoneum, and scrotum and additional radiologic studies sug

Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a rare malignant tumor that occurs mainly in the retroperitoneum of children and young adults. In its prototypical form, DSCRT displays characteristic morphology with nested primitive small round cells in a desmoplastic stroma and a distinctive immunophenotype with polyphenotypic differentiation. However, DSCRT can also exhibit a broader clinical, histologic and immunohistochemical spectrum and, therefore, cause diagnostic difficulties. Given that DSCRT is an aggressive and nearly universally fatal disease, making the correct diagnosis is critical

Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a rare, extremely aggressive and malignant tumor predominantly affects young adolescent males and typically presents as a large intra-abdominal mass. However, tumor arising from other body sites are also reported in the literature. Histology and immunohistochemistry play an important role in the diagnosis and differentiating this rare tumor from other round cell tumors. A multidisciplinary approach consisting of a combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy is the treatment of choice as there is no standard therapy. We report a cas

Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a rare malignancy most commonly originating in the peritoneum. Only rare cases occur outside the abdomen. The present study describes a case of DSRCT in a young adolescent male who initially presented with an orbital mass. The diagnosis was confirmed by the presence of a polyphenotypic immunoprofile (positive for desmin and neural markers) and the characteristic EWS-WT1 gene fusion. Tumor histologically had an entirely solid pattern, lacking evidence of desmoplastic stroma. This purely solid variant shows that when occurring at an atypical locatio

Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is an extremely rare, highly aggressive, malignant tumor of undetermined histogenesis. Adolescent males are primarily affected with a typically abdominal or pelvic mass. Diagnosis is based on histologic analysis of biopsy and cytogenetic studies. Owing to the rarity of the tumor and the unusually aggressive presentation, treatment is challenging and has not been standardized. DSRCT has a very poor prognosis, with a median survival range of 17 to 25 months. In this work, we report a case of DSRCT in the transverse colon, which has never before been re
