Mercury methylation by planktonic and biofilm cultures of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans.

While biofilms are now known to be the predominant form of microbial growth in nature, very little is yet known about their role in environmental mercury (Hg) methylation. Findings of Hg methylation in periphyton communities have indicated the importance of investigating how environmental biofilms affect Hg methylation, as periphyton can be the base of the food webs in aquatic ecosystems. Chemical speciation influences the microbial uptake and methylation of inorganic Hg by planktonic cultures of sulfate-reducing bacteria; however, the effect of speciation on Hg methylation by biofilm cultures

Desulfovibrio desulfuricans bacteraemia associated with intracardiac thrombus: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Desulfovibrio desulfuricans rarely causes blood infection and is usually associated with intestinal infection. Here, we describe a case of bacteraemia with no clear portal of entry and complicated with a large intracardiac mass. CASE PRESENTATION: A 77-year-old woman was admitted with septic shock and multiorgan failure with hepatic disturbances but no morphologic biliary abnormalities. The echocardiography conducted for the hemodynamic evaluation revealed a large left atrium mass with embolic cerebral complications. She had no history of abdominal infection nor cardiac pathology

Genome sequence of the mercury-methylating strain Desulfovibrio desulfuricans ND132.

Desulfovibrio desulfuricans strain ND132 is an anaerobic sulfate-reducing bacterium (SRB) capable of producing methylmercury (MeHg), a potent human neurotoxin. The mechanism of methylation by this and other organisms is unknown. We present the 3.8-Mb genome sequence to provide further insight into microbial mercury methylation.

Cross-linking between cytochrome c3 and flavodoxin from Desulfovibrio gigas.

Tetraheme cytochrome c3 (13 kDa) and flavodoxin (16 kDa), are small electron transfer proteins that have been used to mimic, in vitro, part of the electron-transfer chain that operates between substract electron donors and respiratory electron acceptors partners in Desulfovibrio species (Palma, N., Moura, I., LeGall, J., Van Beeumen, J., Wampler, J., Moura, J. J. G. (1994) Biochemistry 33, 6394-6407). The electron transfer between these two proteins is believed to occur through the formation of a specific complex where electrostatic interaction is the main driving force (Stewart, D., LeGall, J

The link between increased Desulfovibrio and disease severity in Parkinson's disease.

Parkinson's disease (PD), a progressive and incurable neurodegenerative disease, has taken a huge economic toll and medical burden on our society. Increasing evidence has shown a strong link between PD and the gut microbiome, but studies on the relationship between the gut microbiome and the severity of PD are limited. In this study, 90 fecal samples were collected from newly diagnosed and untreated patients with PD (n = 47) and matched healthy control subjects (n = 43). The 16S rRNA amplicon and shotgun metagenomic sequencing was performed, aiming to uncover the connection between the gut mic

[Anaerobiospirillum succiniciproducens and Desulfovibrio desulfuricans in 2 cases of insidious bacteremia].

Two cases of insidious bacteremia by uncommon curve and spiral-shaped, motile anaerobic gram-negative rods are presented. Both of them were of an unclear origin and occurred in immunosuppressed patients with simultaneous diseases. The key tests for the identification of Anaerobiospirillum were its micromorphology, a strictly anaerobic condition, negative catalase activity, the special-potency disk profile, glucose fermentation, and β-NAG production. Desulfovibrio species was identified by all the above preliminary tests but with a different disk profile, as well as for being asaccharolytic and

Desulfovibrio Bacteremia in Patients with Abdominal Infections, Japan, 2020-2025.

We reviewed 8 episodes of Desulfovibrio bacteremia in Japan (2020-2025) and confirmed 4 species by 16S rRNA gene and whole-genome sequencing. We detected β-lactamase genes in 2 D. desulfuricans (blaDES-1-like), 1 D. falkowii (blaMUN-1), and 2 D. fairfieldensis (blaCfiA-like). Mass spectometry failed to identify D. falkowii or D. legallii.

Antibiotic-Resistant Desulfovibrio Produces H2S from Supplements for Animal Farming.

Sulphate-reducing bacteria, primarily Desulfovibrio, are responsible for the active generation of H2S in swine production waste. The model species for sulphate reduction studies, Desulfovibrio vulgaris strain L2, was previously isolated from swine manure characterized by high rates of dissimilatory sulphate reduction. The source of electron acceptors in low-sulphate swine waste for the high rate of H2S formation remains uncertain. Here, we demonstrate the ability of the L2 strain to use common animal farming supplements including L-lysine-sulphate, gypsum and gypsum plasterboards as electron a

The superoxide dismutase activity of desulfoferrodoxin from Desulfovibrio desulfuricans ATCC 27774.

Desulfoferrodoxin (Dfx), a small iron protein containing two mononuclear iron centres (designated centre I and II), was shown to complement superoxide dismutase (SOD) deficient mutants of Escherichia coli [Pianzzola, M.J., Soubes M. & Touati, D. (1996) J. Bacteriol. 178, 6736-6742]. Furthermore, neelaredoxin, a protein from Desulfovibrio gigas containing an iron site similar to centre II of Dfx, was recently shown to have a significant SOD activity [Silva, G., Oliveira, S., Gomes, C.M., Pacheco, I., Liu, M.Y., Xavier, A.V., Teixeira, M., Le Gall, J. & Rodrigues-Pousada, C. Norepinephrine induces growth of Desulfovibrio vulgaris in an iron dependent manner.

UNLABELLED: Desulfovibrio spp. is a commensal sulfate reducing bacterium that is present in small numbers in the gastrointestinal tract. Increased concentrations of Desulfovibrio spp. (blooms) have been reported in patients with inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome. Since stress has been reported to exacerbate symptoms of these chronic diseases, this study examined whether the stress catecholamine norepinephrine (NE) promotes Desulfovibrio growth. Norepinephrine-stimulated growth has been reported in other bacterial taxa, and this effect may depend on the availability of the

Analysis of Physiological Parameters of Desulfovibrio Strains from Individuals with Colitis.

Intestinal sulfate-reducing bacteria are often isolated from patients with inflammatory bowel disease, including ulcerative colitis, and can be involved in the development of gut inflammation. A comparison of the metabolism of intestinal sulfate-reducing bacteria isolated from individuals with colitis and healthy controls using statistical analysis has never been studied and described before. The aim of our research was to evaluate the parameters of dissimilatory sulfate reduction in Desulfovibrio species that were isolated from the feces of healthy objects and individuals with colitis. Intraspecies variability of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans strains determined by the genetic profiles.

Fifteen (soil and intestinal) strains of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans species were typed by PCR method with the use of primers specific for repetitive extragenic palindromic (REP) and enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus (ERIC) sequences. As a result, characteristic DNA fingerprints for the strains were obtained. Moreover, the genetic profiles were found to be useful for typing and distinguishing the strains of D. desulfuricans. According to cluster analysis, PCR with primers complementary to the sequences REP appeared to be slightly more discriminatory than PCR with ERIC primers for

Human gut strains of Desulfovibrio piger exhibit spontaneous induction of multiple prophages.

UNLABELLED: Sulfate-reducing bacterium Desulfovibrio piger is a common member of the human gastrointestinal microbiome, associated with inflammatory conditions but also prevalent in healthy individuals. This suggests that lifestyle factors may shape its ecological role. We investigated prophage carriage and release in three new D. piger strains from healthy donors and strain FI11049 from a patient with ulcerative colitis. Sequencing revealed a larger genome in strain FI11455 (3.096 Mb) compared to FI11311 (2.985 Mb) and FI11458 (2.838 Mb), including a 154 kb megaplasmid which contained an 87 k

Desulfovibrio desulfuricans bacteraemia and associated liver abscess: Case report and literature review.

We present a rare case of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans bacteraemia and associated liver abscess. A 72-year-old Caucasian woman presented with an acute history of fevers, rigors and abdominal pain. She was managed empirically with ceftriaxone and metronidazole and required 24 hours of inotropic support due to hypotension from sepsis. A computed tomography scan of her abdomen demonstrated a 6cm liver abscess in maximal diameter. On day seven of her admission, blood cultures flagged an anaerobic gram-negative bacillus, which was later identified by MALDI-TOF MS as Desulfovibrio desulfuricans. The

Toxicity of hydrogen sulfide toward sulfate-reducing bacteria Desulfovibrio piger Vib-7.

Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) belonging to the intestinal microbiota are the main producers of hydrogen sulfide and their increasing amount due to the accumulation of this compound in the bowel are involved in the initiation and maintenance of inflammatory bowel disease. The purpose of this experiment is to study the relative toxicity of hydrogen sulfide and survival of Desulfovibrio piger Vib-7 through monitoring: sulfate reduction parameters (sulfate consumption, hydrogen sulfide production, lactate consumption and acetate production) and kinetic parameters of these processes. The research

Diversity and Comparison of Intestinal Desulfovibrio in Patients with Liver Cirrhosis and Healthy People.

Desulfovibrio belongs to Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), which are widely present in anaerobic environments, including the human gut. Desulfovibrio has been associated with many human diseases, including chronic liver disease. However, the characteristics and difference of Desulfovibrio from fecal samples of healthy volunteers (HV) and patients with liver cirrhosis (LC) have not been fully elucidated. Here, we isolated Desulfovibrio from the feces of 6 HV and 9 LC, and 88 Desulfovibrio strains were obtained. In the feces of HV, 55% of isolated strains were D. desulfuricans, followed by D. int

Desulfovibrio fairfieldensis adhesion on implantable titanium used in odontology: a preliminary study.

The study presented here aimed to assess the ability of Desulfovibrio fairfieldensis bacteria to adhere to and form biofilm on the structure of titanium used in implants. D. fairfieldensis was found in the periodontal pockets in the oral environment, indicating that these bacteria can colonize the implant-bone interface and consequently cause bone infection and implant corrosion. Plates of implantable titanium, of which surfaces were characterized by scanning electronic microscopy and Raman spectroscopy, were immersed in several suspensions of D. fairfieldensis cells containing potassium nitra
