Association between gut microbiota and adrenal disease: a two-sample Mendelian randomized study.

BACKGROUND: Some observational studies and clinical experiments suggest a close association between gut microbiota and metabolic diseases. However, the causal effects of gut microbiota on adrenal diseases, including Adrenocortical insufficiency, Cushing syndrome, and Hyperaldosteronism, remain unclear. METHODS: This study conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization analysis using summary statistics data of gut microbiota from a large-scale genome-wide association study conducted by the MiBioGen Consortium. Summary statistics data for the three adrenal diseases were obtained from the FinnGe

Cascading sulfur cycling in simulated oil sands pit lake water cap mesocosms transitioning from oxic to euxinic conditions.

Base Mine Lake (BML), the first full-scale demonstration of oil sands tailings pit lake reclamation technology, is experiencing expansive, episodic hypolimnetic euxinia resulting in greater sulfur biogeochemical cycling within the water cap. Here, Fluid Fine Tailings (FFT)-water mesocosm experiments simulating the in situ BML summer hypolimnetic oxic-euxinic transition determined sulfur biogeochemical processes and their controlling factors. While mesocosm water caps without FFT amendments experienced limited geochemical and microbial changes during the experimental period, FFT-amended mesocos

Regulation of intestinal flora in patients with chronic atrophic gastritis by modified Chai Shao Liu Jun Zi decoction based on 16S rRNA sequencing.

Chai Shao Liu Jun Zi decoction (CSLJZD) is an effective Chinese medicine for the treatment of chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG). However, the effect of CSLJZD on the intestinal flora of patients with CAG remains unclear. We used 16S rRNA gene sequencing to investigate the regulatory effects of CSLJZD on intestinal microflora in patients with CAG. Eight patients with CAG were randomly selected as the model group and 8 healthy medical examiners as the control group; the treatment group comprised patients with CAG after CSLJZD treatment. High-throughput sequencing and bioinformatics analysis of th

Implications from distinct sulfate-reducing bacteria populations between cattle manure and digestate in the elucidation of H2S production during anaerobic digestion of animal slurry.

Biogas produced from the anaerobic digestion of animal slurry consists mainly of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), but also includes other minor gases, such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S). Since it can act as a potent corrosive agent and presents a health hazard even at low concentrations, H2S is considered an undesirable by-product of anaerobic digestion. Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRBs) have been identified as the main biological source of H2S in a number of natural, biological, and human-made habitats, and thus represent likely candidate microorganisms responsible for the production of H2S

Investigating the Impact of the Gut Microbiota on Nasal Polyp Development: Insights from Mendelian Randomization.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps has a high post-surgery recurrence, suggesting complex pathology. However, research into underlying mechanisms and contributing factors, such as gut microbiota, is lacking. This study aimed to investigate the causal relationship between nasal polyps and gut microbiota, and to identify and quantify the potential mediating roles of metabolic pathways. We investigated the cause-and-effect relationship between nasal polyps and the gut microbiota and determined the influence of metabolic pathways as possible mediators. METHODS: This study util

Genetic insights into the gut microbiota, herpes zoster, and postherpetic neuralgia: a bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization study.

BACKGROUND: An increasing amount of evidence suggests that gastrointestinal diseases are risk factors for herpes zoster (HZ) and postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). Among them, the gut microbiota may play a crucial role in this process. Therefore, this study aims to explore the potential causal association between the gut microbiota and HZ and PHN. METHODS: Bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was used to detect the causal effect between HZ and PHN and the gut microbiota. Gut microbiota data were derived from the MiBioGen consortium, while HZ and PHN data were obtained fro

Causal relationship between gut microbiota and adenomyosis: metagenomics sequencing and Mendelian randomization.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence implicates the gut microbiota in the pathogenesis of adenomyosis (AM); however, whether this association is causal and through which mechanisms it operates remain largely unknown. METHODS: To interrogate potential causal relationships, we performed a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis leveraging inverse-variance weighting (IVW) as the primary estimator, complemented by MR-Egger, weighted median, and weighted mode approaches, to evaluate the causal effects of gut microbial taxa and microbiota-derived metabolic pathways on AM. We further conducted med

The microbial sulfur cycle at extremely haloalkaline conditions of soda lakes.

Soda lakes represent a unique ecosystem with extremely high pH (up to 11) and salinity (up to saturation) due to the presence of high concentrations of sodium carbonate in brines. Despite these double extreme conditions, most of the lakes are highly productive and contain a fully functional microbial system. The microbial sulfur cycle is among the most active in soda lakes. One of the explanations for that is high-energy efficiency of dissimilatory conversions of inorganic sulfur compounds, both oxidative and reductive, sufficient to cope with costly life at double extreme conditions. The oxid

Study on the unique effects of Wubi Shanyao Pills in improving postmenopausal osteoporosis via the "gut-bone" axis.

BACKGROUND: Postmenopausal Osteoporosis (PMOP) is a prevalent bone disease affecting postmenopausal women. The "gut-bone" axis, a concept indicating a close relationship between gut microbiota and PMOP, is the focus of our study. Wubi Shanyao Pills (WSP), a traditional Chinese compound formula, is known for its beneficial tonic effects on intestinal function. Several individual herbs within its formulation have demonstrated positive effects on PMOP. However, the impact of WSP on PMOP and its underlying mechanisms is a significant area that remains inadequately understood and is the key focus o

Kidney-tonifying blood-activating decoction delays ventricular remodeling in rats with chronic heart failure by regulating gut microbiota and metabolites and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase/p65 nuclear factor kappa-B/aquaporin-4 signaling pathway.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Myocardial infarction has likely contributed to the increased prevalence of heart failure(HF).As a result of ventricular remodeling and reduced cardiac function, colonic blood flow decreases, causing mucosal ischemia and hypoxia of the villous structure of the intestinal wall. This damage in gut barrier function increases bowel wall permeability, leading to fluid metabolism disorder, gut microbial dysbiosis, increased gut bacteria translocation into the circulatory system and increased circulating endotoxins, thus promoting a typical inflammatory state.Traditional

Refining the relationship between gut microbiota and common hematologic malignancies: insights from a bidirectional Mendelian randomization study.

BackgroundThe relationship between gut microbiota and hematologic malignancies has attracted considerable attention. As research progresses, it has become increasingly clear that the composition of gut microbiota may influence the onset and progression of hematologic malignancies. However, our understanding of this association remains limited.MethodsIn our study, we classified gut microbiota into five groups based on information at the phylum, class, order, family, and genus levels. Subsequently, we obtained data related to common hematologic malignancies from the IEU Open GWAS project. We the
