Distinguishing abiotic and biotic transformation of tetrachloroethylene and trichloroethylene by stable carbon isotope fractionation.

Significant carbon isotope fractionation was observed during FeS-mediated reductive dechlorination of tetrachloroethylene (PCE) and trichloroethylene (TCE). Bulk enrichment factors (E(bulk)) for PCE were -30.2 +/- 4.3 per thousand (pH 7), -29.54 +/- 0.83 per thousand (pH 8), and -24.6 +/- 1.1 per thousand (pH 9). For TCE, E(bulk) values were -33.4 +/- 1.5 per thousand (pH 8) and -27.9 +/- 1.3 per thousand (pH 9). A smaller magnitude of carbon isotope fractionation resulted from microbial reductive dechlorination by two isolated pure cultures (Desulfuromonas michiganensis strain BB1 (BB1) and S

Ferrihydrite redox enhanced biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons coupling with conversion of soil multi-elements by electron transfer.

In the soil microbial electrochemical remediation, iron transformations commonly govern electron transfer, bioelectricity generation and pollutant degradation. In this study, the conversion of ferrihydrite to goethite (cathode) and hematite (anode) increased electronic circulation channels, with a 67 % increase in charge output and 74 % improvement in petroleum hydrocarbon removal. Simultaneously, ferrihydrite-mediated processes facilitated the activation of recalcitrant organic carbon, resulting in 9 % lignin and 30 % unsaturated hydrocarbon degradation. This transformation shifted organic ma

The Impact of Bisphenol A on the Anaerobic Sulfur Transformation: Promoting Sulfur Flow and Toxic H2S Production.

Bisphenol A (BPA), as a typical leachable additive from microplastics and one of the most productive bulk chemicals, is widely distributed in sediments, sewers, and wastewater treatment plants, where active sulfur cycling takes place. However, the effect of BPA on sulfur transformation, particularly toxic H2S production, has been previously overlooked. This work found that BPA at environmentally relevant levels (i.e., 50-200 mg/kg total suspended solids, TSS) promoted the release of soluble sulfur compounds and increased H2S gas production by 14.3-31.9%. The tryptophan-like proteins of microbe

Modeling of heavy nitrate corrosion in anaerobe aquifer injection water biofilm: a case study in a flow rig.

Heavy carbon steel corrosion developed during nitrate mitigation of a flow rig connected to a water injection pipeline flowing anaerobe saline aquifer water. Genera-specific QPCR primers quantified 74% of the microbial biofilm community, and further 87% of the community of the nonamended parallel rig. The nonamended biofilm hosted 6.3 × 10(6) SRB cells/cm(2) and the S(35)-sulfate-reduction rate was 1.1 μmol SO4(2-)/cm(2)/day, being congruent with the estimated SRB biomass formation and the sulfate areal flux. Nitrate amendment caused an 18-fold smaller SRB population, but up to 44 times higher

The influence of in situ chemical oxidation on microbial community composition in groundwater contaminated with chlorinated solvents.

In situ chemical oxidation with permanganate has become an accepted remedial treatment for groundwater contaminated with chlorinated solvents. This study focuses on the immediate and short-term effects of sodium permanganate (NaMnO(4)) on the indigenous subsurface microbial community composition in groundwater impacted by trichloroethylene (TCE). Planktonic and biofilm microbial communities were studied using groundwater grab samples and reticulated vitreous carbon passive samplers, respectively. Microbial community composition was analyzed by terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism

Current trends in trichloroethylene biodegradation: a review.

Over the past few years biodegradation of trichloroethylene (TCE) using different microorganisms has been investigated by several researchers. In this review article, an attempt has been made to present a critical summary of the recent results related to two major processes--reductive dechlorination and aerobic co-metabolism used for TCE biodegradation. It has been shown that mainly Clostridium sp. DC-1, KYT-1, Dehalobacter, Dehalococcoides, Desulfuromonas, Desulfitobacterium, Propionibacterium sp. HK-1, and Sulfurospirillum bacterial communities are responsible for the reductive dechlorinatio

Spatial heterogeneity of dechlorinating bacteria and limiting factors for in situ trichloroethene dechlorination revealed by analyses of sediment cores from a polluted field site.

Microbiological analyses of sediment samples were conducted to explore potentials and limitations for bioremediation of field sites polluted with chlorinated ethenes. Intact sediment cores, collected by direct push probing from a 35-ha contaminated area, were analyzed in horizontal layers. Cultivation-independent PCR revealed Dehalococcoides to be the most abundant 16S rRNA gene phylotype with a suspected potential for reductive dechlorination of the major contaminant trichloroethene (TCE). In declining abundances, Desulfitobacterium, Desulfuromonas and Dehalobacter were also detected. In TCE-

Unraveling Microbial Communities Associated with Methylmercury Production in Paddy Soils.

Rice consumption is now recognized as an important pathway of human exposure to the neurotoxin methylmercury (MeHg), particularly in countries where rice is a staple food. Although the discovery of a two-gene cluster hgcAB has linked Hg methylation to several phylogenetically diverse groups of anaerobic microorganisms converting inorganic mercury (Hg) to MeHg, the prevalence and diversity of Hg methylators in microbial communities of rice paddy soils remain unclear. We characterized the abundance and distribution of hgcAB genes using third-generation PacBio long-read sequencing and Illumina sh

Development and Characterization of PCE-to-Ethene Dechlorinating Microcosms with Contaminated River Sediment.

An industrial complex in Wonju, contaminated with trichloroethene (TCE), was one of the most problematic sites in Korea. Despite repeated remedial trials for decades, chlorinated ethenes remained as sources of down-gradient groundwater contamination. Recent efforts were being made to remove the contaminants of the area, but knowledge of the indigenous microbial communities and their dechlorination abilities were unknown. Thus, the objectives of the present study were (i) to evaluate the dechlorination abilities of indigenous microbes at the contaminated site, (ii) to characterize which microbe

Insights into microbial interactive mechanism regulating dissimilatory nitrate reduction processes in riparian freshwater aquaculture sediments.

Aquaculture can substantially alter the accumulation and cycling of nutrients in sediments. However, the microbial mechanisms mediating sediment dissimilatory nitrate (NO3-) reduction in freshwater aquaculture ponds are still unclear, which rule the removal and retention of N element. In the present study, three microbial NO3- reduction processes in riparian aquaculture pond sediments (i.e., crab, shrimp and fish ponds) and natural freshwater sediments (i.e., lakes and rivers) were investigated via isotopic tracing and molecular analyses. The potential rates of denitrification, anaerobic ammon

Application of molecular biological tools for monitoring efficiency of trichloroethylene remediation.

Trichloroethylene (TCE) is one of the most ubiquitous halogenated organic compounds of concerns of carcinogens in groundwater in Taiwan. Bioremediation has been recognized as a cost-effective approach in reducing TCE concentration. Five pilot-scale wells were constructed to monitor TCE concentrations in contaminated groundwater. With injection of EOS®, TCE was effectively degraded to 42%-93% by the end of 175 days. The biostimulation with EOS® was useful in establishing a micro-site anaerobic but with limited contribution. Dilution of the aquifer movement also caused the TCE reduction among in

Tetrachloroethene-dehalogenating bacteria.

Tetrachloroethene is a frequent groundwater contaminant often persisting in the subsurface environments. It is recalcitrant under aerobic conditions because it is in a highly oxidized state and is not readily susceptible to oxidation. Nevertheless, at least 15 organisms from different metabolic groups, viz. halorespirators (9), acetogens (2), methanogens (3) and facultative anaerobes (2), that are able to metabolize tetrachloroethene have been isolated as axenic cultures to-date. Some of these organisms couple dehalo-genation to energy conservation and utilize tetrachloroethene as the only sou

Reed root-biofilm systems are associated with cadmium depletion in wetland soils, along with extracellular polymeric substances compositional shifts and distinct bacterial enrichment.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in wetland soils poses a severe threat to ecosystem health, yet traditional remediation strategies often lack efficient, self-sustaining mechanisms for long-term depletion. This study investigates the roles of reed root-biofilm (RRB) systems in Cd depletion and shaping microbial community structure. Through a 240-day factorial microcosm experiment involving five treatment groups (bulk soil, sterilized soil, reed root-biofilm alone, and their combinations) across a Cd concentration gradient (0-10 mg/kg), and integrating ICP-OES analysis, extracellular polymeric substa

Dual effects of PFOA or PFOS on reductive dechlorination of trichloroethylene (TCE).

PFASs and chlorinated solvents are the common co-contaminants in soil and groundwater at firefighter training areas (FTAs). Although PFASs mixtures could have adverse impacts on bioremediation of trichloroethylene (TCE) by inhibiting Dehalococcoides (Dhc), little is known about the effect and contribution of PFOA or PFOS on dechlorination of TCE by non-Dhc organohalide-respiring bacteria (OHRB). To study this, PFOA and PFOS were amended to the growth medium of a non-Dhc OHRB-containing enrichment culture to determine the impact on dechlorination. This study demonstrated that high levels of PFO

Humin and biochar accelerated microbial reductive dechlorination of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol under weak electrical stimulation.

The extracellular electron transfer (EET) is regarded as one of the crucial factors that limit the application of the bioelectrochemical system (BES). In this study, two different solid-phase redox mediators (RMs), biochar (1.2 g/L, T-B) and humin (1.2 g/L, T-H) were used for boosting the microorganisms accessing the electrons required for 2,4,6-TCP dechlorination under weak electrical stimulation (-0.278 V vs. Standard hydrogen electrode). BES with dissolved RM anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS 0.5 mmol/L, T-A) was used as a comparison. The results showed that dechlorination of 2,4,6-TCP co

A Dehalococcoides-containing co-culture that dechlorinates tetrachloroethene to trans-1,2-dichloroethene.

In the microbial reductive dechlorination of tetrachloroethene (PCE) and trichloroethene (TCE), dechlorinators usually produce cis-1,2-dichloroethene (cis-DCE) as the predominant product or an intermediate. This study shows that dechlorination of PCE and TCE can also lead to the generation of trans-1,2-dichloroethene (trans-DCE) by a co-culture MB. During its enrichment process, the ratio of trans- to cis-DCE increased from 1.4 (+/-0.1):1-3.7 (+/-0.4):1, whereas the TCE reductive dechlorination rate went up from approximately 26.2 to approximately 68.8 micromol l(-1) day(-1). Quantifying sulfidization and non-sulfidization in long-term in-situ microbial colonized As(V)-ferrihydrite coated sand columns: Insights into As mobility.

Sulfide-induced reduction (sulfidization) of arsenic (As)-bearing Fe(III) (oxyhydro)oxides may lead to As mobilization in aquifer systems. However, little is known about the relative contributions of sulfidization and non-sulfidization of Fe(III) (oxyhydro)oxides reduction to As mobilization. To address this issue, high As groundwater with low sulfide (LS) and high sulfide (HS) concentrations were pumped through As(V)-bearing ferrihydrite-coated sand columns (LS-column and HS-column, respectively) being settled within wells in the western Hetao Basin, China. Diversity of beta-propeller phytase genes in the intestinal contents of grass carp provides insight into the release of major phosphorus from phytate in nature.

Phytate is the most abundant organic phosphorus compound in nature, and microbial mineralization of phytate by phytase is a key process for phosphorus recycling in the biosphere. In the present study, beta-propeller phytase (BPP) gene fragments were readily amplified from the intestinal contents of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus) directly or from phytate-degrading isolates from the same source, confirming the widespread occurrence of BPP in aquatic communities. The amounts of sequences collected using these two methods differed (88 distinct genes versus 10 isolates), but the sequences sh
