Costs Attributable to Falls Based on Diagnosis-Related Groups (DRGs) Analysis of Hospitalised Patients: A Case-Control Study.

Background/objectives: Falls are the most common adverse events in hospitals. This study aimed to estimate excess hospitalisation costs attributable to inpatient falls, using Diagnosis-Related Group (DRG) relative weights as a proxy for resource consumption. Methods: Case-control study. Cases included patients who had sustained a fall during hospitalisation between 2020 and 2022 in 19 inpatient units. Controls were selected with matching technique based on age and admission period. Diagnosis-Related Groups and their resource consumption and cost estimators (relative weights) were provided by t

Factors related to delayed diagnosis of HIV infection in southeastern France. EVALVIH group.

We aimed to identify risk factors associated with delayed diagnosis of HIV infection in a French region highly affected by AIDS. Data were collected in southeastern France through the HIV-surveillance system based upon anonymous declarations by laboratories and physicians prescribing HIV testing. From January 1996 to December 1997, 825 persons were diagnosed for the first time as HIV infected (female: 32%; >40 years: 28%); 46% had been infected through heterosexual intercourse, 26% through homosexual intercourse, and 19% through intravenous drug use. The semestrial (6 monthly) incidence rate d

Assessment of risk-adjusted mortality ratio (RAMR) in bloodstream infections using all-patient refined diagnosis-related groups (APR-DRGs).

OBJECTIVES: To calculate a risk-adjusted mortality ratio (RAMR) for bloodstream infections (BSIs) using all-patient refined diagnosis-related groups (APR-DRGs) and compare it with the crude mortality rate (CMR). METHODS: Retrospective observational study of prevalent BSI at our institution from January 2019 to December 2022. In-hospital mortality was adjusted with a binary logistic regression model adjusting for sex, age, admission type and mortality risk for the hospitalization episode according to the four severity levels of APR DRGs. The RAMR was calculated as the ratio of observed to expe

Current Procedural Terminology Codes Combined With Hip and Femur Diagnosis-Related Groups Provide a More Accurate Assessment of Costs.

INTRODUCTION: Diagnosis-Related Groups (DRGs) have become the basis of the Center of Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) hospital reimbursement system. Wide variability of patient factors and procedures bundled into a single DRG may contribute to significant cost variation and limited usefulness when analyzing economic performance. This investigation sought to analyze variation in hip and femur fracture inpatient costs as assessed by DRG and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients age ≥ 18 treated with operatively managed fractures of the hip and femur at a

[Off-label coding in the out-of-diagnosis related group reimbursement list: Nationwide assessment].

The full reimbursement of drugs listed on the "out of diagnosis-related groups" list and coded as off-label use, which has shown continuous growth, is being reconsidered. The objective of this study was to provide a nationwide overview of this practice and to identify the determinants of its dynamics. The percentage of dispensing units coded as off-label use, calculated from the Scan Santé database between 2020 and 2024, was stratified by year, region (metropolitan France), and type of healthcare institution (university hospital, general hospital, cancer center, private non-profit hospital, pr

ABH and Lewis blood group systems and their relation to diagnosis and risk of Helicobacter pylori infection.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori infection occurs in 50% of the world's population and represents a major risk factor for chronic gastritis, gastroduodenal ulcer and gastric cancer in developed and developing countries. The distribution of H. pylori virulence factors is diverse and varies geographically, such as the CagA and VacA genes, which have revealed association with disease status. Some findings show increased frequencies of these diseases in O Le (a-b +) and A Le (a-b +) blood type individuals, but other studies not found any relationship between these blood groups and H. pylori infecti

Diagnosis-Related Group Weight and Derived Case Mix Index to Assess the Complexity among Twins.

OBJECTIVE: Diagnosis-related groups (DRGs) are used to summarize hospital morbidity and mortality. Each DRG has a weight which is important in calculating the case mix index (CMI), a numeric summary of disease complexity in a population of patients. We utilized DRG weight and resultant CMI to compare postnatal outcomes among singletons versus monochorionic and monoamniotic, monochorionic diamniotic, and dichorionic diamniotic twins. STUDY DESIGN: This single-center and retrospective cohort study evaluated DRGs assigned by the investigators, birth weight, gestational age, length of stay (LOS),
