Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is an empirically validated treatment for chronic, difficult-to-treat, life-threatening mental health conditions. DBT can be challenging to implement and maintain in managed care systems because of the need for substantial infrastructure and intensive clinician training. As a result, most clients receive components of DBT, known as DBT-informed care. This model is valuable in its own right, including for individuals with less severe clinical symptoms. Additionally, clinicians who provide DBT experience professional benefit. Cinematherapy, the incorporation of

OBJECTIVE: Alexithymia is proposed as a prominent clinical feature of eating disorders (EDs). However, despite theoretical reason to believe that alexithymia could interfere with the success of treatments, few studies have tested whether alexithymia changes over the course of treatment. The goals of the current study were to evaluate (a) changes in alexithymia over the course of intensive Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) for EDs, and (b) associations between alexithymia and ED symptoms over time.
METHOD: A mixed-diagnostic group of patients with EDs (N = 894) completed the Eating Disorders

Standard dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), with its 12-month format, has a documented record of efficacy. While emerging evidence is supportive of DBT adaptations in community mental health settings and brief, intensive formats, many of these studies are limited by sample size of its DBT group, by omission of program completion rates and specific data from program noncompleters, and by focusing solely on symptom-focused measures-which inadvertently omits observing gains associated with well-being. We used a nonexperimental design to assess client outcomes on pathology-focused and positive-ps

OBJECTIVE: Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is associated with excessive self-control. This iterative case series describes the augmentation of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for outpatient adult AN with skills addressing emotional and behavioral overcontrol. An overly controlled style is theorized to develop from the transaction between an individual with heightened threat sensitivity and reduced reward sensitivity, interacting with an environment reinforcing overcontrol and punishing imperfection.
METHOD: Case Series 1 utilized standard DBT, resulting in retention of 5/6 patients and a body mass i

IMPORTANCE: Early-onset bipolar disorder conveys substantial risk for suicide. No psychosocial intervention for this population expressly targets suicidal behavior.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) for adolescents with bipolar spectrum disorder is more effective than standard of care (SOC) psychotherapy in decreasing suicide attempts over 1 year.
DESIGN, SETTINGS, AND PARTICIPANTS: Adolescents aged 12 to 18 years diagnosed with bipolar spectrum disorder were recruited from a specialty outpatient psychiatric clinic between November 2014 and September 2019. In

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is increasingly diagnosed in perinatal and infant settings, and research suggests that as well as an escalation of BPD symptoms in this period, these symptoms may also be detrimental to infant development. Providing tailored treatments during the postnatal period may help women and prevent an intergenerational cycle of emotional and interpersonal symptoms in infants. Mother-infant dialectical behavior therapy (MI-DBT) has produced promising, yet inconsistent, improvements on quantitative scales of maternal mental health and the mother-infant re

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) is an effective treatment for borderline personality disorder (BPD), yet many healthcare facilities struggle to implement one of the modes of DBT, phone coaching. The aims of this study were to present barriers and reported solutions regarding the implementation of DBT phone coaching. We conducted a sequential mixed methods national program evaluation that included a quantitative self-report survey completed by Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) facilities (N=59) offering any of the four modes of DBT. Subsequent qualitative interviews using a semi-structur

OBJECTIVE: Despite advances in suicide prevention implemented throughout the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) including the hiring of Suicide Prevention Coordinators (SPCs) at every VA hospital, enhanced monitoring, and the availability of 24-hour crisis hotline services, suicide by veterans remains a critical problem affecting 20 veterans daily. Few empirically based treatment strategies for suicide prevention for postdeployment military personnel exist. This study aimed to test whether dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), one of the few psychosocial treatments with proven efficacy in di

Radically Open-Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RO-DBT) is a transdiagnostic treatment designed to address a spectrum of difficult-to-treat disorders sharing similar phenotypic and genotypic features associated with maladaptive over-control-such as anorexia nervosa, chronic depression, and obsessive compulsive personality disorder. Over-control has been linked to social isolation, aloof and distant relationships, cognitive rigidity, high detailedfocused processing, risk aversion, strong needs for structure, inhibited emotional expression, and hyper-perfectionism. While resting on the dialectical

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) has been shown to effectively target binge eating disorder (BED). This study pilots the effectiveness of group DBT for obese "emotional eaters" to reduce eating psychopathology and achieve weight maintenance. Thirty-five obese male and female emotional eaters receiving 20 group psychotherapy sessions of DBT adapted for emotional eating were assessed at end-of-treatment and 6 month follow-up for reductions in eating psychopathology and weight maintenance. DBT resulted in significant reductions in emotional eating and other markers of eating psychopathology at

OBJECTIVE: To identify predictors of relapse at 6-month follow-up for women with binge eating disorder (BED).
METHOD: Participants were 32 women with BED who had initially achieved abstinence from binge eating after 20 weeks of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) adapted for patients with BED. Posttreatment predictor variables included the subscales Restraint, Weight Concerns, and Shape Concerns from the Eating Disorders Examination (EDE), the Emotional Eating Scale score, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, body mass index, and early versus late age of binge eating onset.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of substance use disorders (SUD) remains a persistent challenge. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a multimodal cognitive-behavioral treatment approach that integrates acceptance- and change-oriented strategies and was originally developed to address severe emotion dysregulation. In the context of SUD, DBT-based adaptations and skills-oriented formats are particularly used to target emotion regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness and relapse prevention. Aim: The aim of this review was to synthesize the current state of research in order to explore and evaluate

OBJECTIVE: This study explores researches of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) in mental health to provide an overview of current knowledge landscape and predict future development trends of DBT.
METHOD: The bibliometric approach was used in the study. Articles on DBT-related research were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database up to December 31, 2024, and analyzed using VOSviewer and CiteSpace.
RESULTS: A total of 2,723 articles were analyzed. DBT research has grown significantly since the 1990s, with the United States leading in publication volume, citation imp

Introduction: Trauma-focused therapy (TFT) is highly effective in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, there is some evidence that TFT is less effective in specific groups, such as veterans and people with comorbid personality disorders, emotion regulation problems or substance use disorders.Aim: In this pre-post pilot study, we investigated feasibility and effectiveness of a 12-week veteran intensive treatment consisting of integrated Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and TFT, in Dutch veterans with PTSD, comorbid emotion regulation and/or substance use problems. Results: Self-repor

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a serious health condition with insufficient treatment options. Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RO-DBT) offers a new treatment approach targeting maladaptive overcontrol, a proposed underlying mechanism in AN. This study evaluated the feasibility, acceptability, and the preliminary efficacy of a 32-week standard RO-DBT intervention for individuals with AN in an outpatient setting. Twenty-three participants with AN (median age 20 years; median illness duration 5 years; 95.7% female) were included. Feasibility was demonstrated by a high retention rate (83%)

INTRODUCTION: Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) has assembled a large body of evidence for the treatment of emotional dysregulation in borderline personality disorder (BPD), but also in other disorders characterized by emotional dysregulation (e.g., bipolar disorder (BD) and ADHD). Standalone skills learning groups address the problem of limited resources in several clinical settings. Furthermore, transdiagnostic skills groups facilitate the recruitment and decrease the scattering of resources in psychiatric settings. However, few studies have focused on the pertinence of transdiagnostic stan

Dysregulated anger, and its common behavioral urge, aggression, pose substantial costs to public health and society. Though some studies have shown DBT to be efficacious in treating aggression and anger dyscontrol, the overall effects of DBT on these outcomes are unknown. To address this limitation, a systematic review with meta-analysis was conducted on 34 studies (N = 2536) published in PsycINFO and PubMed between January 1994 and February 2022 assessing the effect of DBT on anger and/or aggression. Included studies were empirical research articles published in a peer-reviewed journal and as

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is an empirically supported treatment for borderline personality disorder (BPD) in adults, however fewer studies have examined outcomes in adolescents. This study tested the effectiveness of an intensive 1-month, residential DBT treatment for adolescent girls meeting criteria for BPD. Additionally, given well-established associations between BPD symptoms and childhood abuse, the impact of abuse on treatment outcomes was assessed. Participants were female youth (n = 53) aged 13-20 years (M = 17.00, SD = 1.89) completing a 1-month residential DBT program. At pr

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is an empirically supported behavioral treatment for individuals with borderline personality disorder who frequently exhibit life-threatening behavior, such as suicide attempts, nonsuicidal self-injury urges and actions, and suicidal ideation. We provide an overview of the theoretical framework by which DBT conceptualizes these life-threatening behaviors and the principles by which safety planning measures are implemented and maintained throughout treatment. The importance of orienting clients to treatment and obtaining their commitment to decrease life-threa
