Application of orthodontic elastics for the treatment of midline diastemas.

Patients with a midline diastema smaller than 2 mm are often treated with orthodontic elastics applied on composite resin esthetic buttons bonded to incisors or incorporated in clear removable trays. However, these methods of applying elastics for diastema closure have shortcomings, including the additional clinical steps of etching the facial tooth surface and bonding for composite resin buttons; occlusal derangement and dependence on patient compliance for trays; and compromised esthetics for both treatment approaches. This article presents an alternative technique that overcomes the limitat

Closure of large midline diastema by a "HIV-Spring".

Midline diastema is a common orthodontic problem in mixed dentition caused by various factors like genetic, supernumery teeth, abnormal frenum attachment, habits and microdontia etc. Large diastemas need closure for the eruption of adjacent teeth. I present here a newly designed customized self active HIV-Spring (Hari Inverted 'V' Spring) for closing a large diastema with minimum orthodontic materials and less activation visits. The spring can be modfied for the three dimensional movement of central incisors.

The influence of etiological factors in the occurence of diastema mediana.

Even from the distant past the aesthetic perception in an individual was diminished by the presence of gap between the central incisors. This condition is found under the term "dents du bonheur" or "lucky teeth" and is encountered even among world famous figures including Brigitte Bardot, Eliah Wood, Madonna, Zac Efron, Amy Winehouse and Elton John. The teeth gaps are still considered main reasons for dissatisfaction of the dental patients and reasons for the requirement of aesthetic treatment. The purpose of this study is to exhibit the influence of the etiological factors in the occurrence o

Characteristic tissue interaction of the diastema region in mice.

Rodents have a toothless diastema between the incisor and the first molar, which may contain rudimentary tooth germs. In the lower diastema region of mice at E13, the rudimentary tooth germs, which developed into the bud stage before its removal by apoptosis, was found. The immunoreactivity to tenascin was observed in the condensed mesenchyme around the normal tooth bud and was detected in only the basement membrane in the diastema bud. This result shows that the relationship between mesenchymal condensation and tooth development. The similar patterns of Msx-1 and Msx-2 expression between the

Management of maxillary midline diastema with emphasis on etiology.

The importance of the presence of a maxillary midline diastema resides in its position and the concern it causes to patients. This specific diastema has been attributed to genetic and environmental factors, even though it is often a normal feature of growth, especially in primary and mixed dentition. The need for treatment is mainly attributed to esthetic and psychological reasons, rather than functional ones. Although it is often the case, treatment plans should not be selected empirically but rather should be based on adequate scientific documentation. Possible therapeutic approaches include

The midline diastema: a review of its etiology and treatment.

A midline diastema usually is part of normal dental development during the mixed dentition. However, several factors can cause a diastema that may require intervention. An enlarged labial frenum has been blamed for most persistent diastemas, but its etiologic role now is understood to represent only a small proportion of cases. Other etiologies associated with diastemas include oral habits, muscular imbalances, physical impediments, abnormal maxillary arch structure, and various dental anomalies. Effective diastema treatment requires correct diagnosis of its etiology and intervention relevant

Computer-generated diagnostic correction of anterior diastemas.

A technique for pretreatment estimation of appearance following cosmetic change to the anterior teeth by using a computer-generated image has been described. Patients should be advised that the generated projection is an estimation. As with a diagnostic set-up, a computer-generated result can only approximate final treatment. The patient must understand that the result could vary for reasons that might include (1) restorative material, (2) functional occlusal needs, (3) gingival tissue irritability, (4) artificial versus outdoor light, and (5) the angle at which the photograph was made. Median diastema: Prevalence, novel classification, and evidence-based investigation.

BACKGROUND: Maxillary midline diastema (MMD) is a gap between the maxillary central incisors, posing cosmetic and psychosocial concerns for most patients. MMD results from multifactorial causes, including labial frenum, microdontia, genetics, and various oral habits. The purpose of this article was to review MMD, analyze its prevalence, describe a new shape-based classification, and identify potential causes with a focus on evidence-based practice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional descriptive study utilized orthodontic clinical records of Saudi adults aged 18-30 years who had not s

Prevalence and Etiological Distribution of Midline Diastema- An Institutional Study.

INTRODUCTION: The space between two central incisors is called diastema. It is aesthetically very unpleasant to the patients. Besides, this it may be a sign of underlying pathology. So proper research about diastema is necessary. This study has been carried out in Dr. R. Ahmed Dental College and Hospital as no such study has been conducted in Eastern India so far. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 1000 samples were taken randomly (500 males and 500 females) from the OPD of Dr. R. Ahmed Dental College and Hospital to calculate prevalence of diastema, its male female variation, location and etiological di

Should midline diastema in mixed dentition be an aesthetic concern?

BACKGROUND: Mixed dentition determines an important period of occlusion development in childhood. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the aesthetic impact of the midline diastema cut-off point in mixed dentition. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study was performed with 257 children aged 8-10 years in late mixed dentition, with midline diastema of 1-5 mm and normal maxillary overjet. Orthodontic Aesthetic Subjective Impact Score determined the aesthetic impact of the midline diastema. Four quartiles of diastema measurements and impact scores were considered as cut-off points. Receiver Operating

Closing diastemas and creating artificial gingiva with polymer ceramics.

A 40-year-old male patient elected orthodontic correction of his crowded anterior teeth, leaving multiple root exposures and spacing in the papilla areas. Connective tissue surgery did not satisfy the patient's expectations and led him to seek alternative treatments. An innovative technique was developed to achieve root coverage and fill-in spaces in the papilla areas. This noninvasive technique used a polymer ceramic material that was bonded to the crown and root surface of the individual teeth. The veneer restorations were inserted on the teeth as a solid unit, then separated into individual

An interdisciplinary approach to management of diastemas: A novel classification and a case report.

Diastema between the teeth negatively affects the patients' smile, psychology and daily activities by creating a disharmony in the patients' face. The development of diastema has been attributed to several factors such as labial frenulum, microdontia, mesiodens, peg-shaped lateral incisors, agenesis, cysts, habits such as finger sucking, tongue thrusting, or lip sucking, dental malformations, genetics, proclinations, dental-skeletal discrepancies, and imperfect coalescence of interdental septum. Patients often present with complex problems that require a multidisciplinary treatment approach wh
