Long-term effects of very low-carbohydrate and high-carbohydrate weight-loss diets on psychological health in obese adults with type 2 diabetes: randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Very low-carbohydrate, high-fat (LC) diets are used for type 2 diabetes (T2DM) management, but their effects on psychological health remain largely unknown. This study examined the long-term effects of an LC diet on psychological health. METHODS: One hundred and fifteen obese adults [age: 58.5 ± 7.1 years; body mass index: 34.6 ± 4.3 kg m(-2) ; HbA1c : 7.3 ± 1.1%] with T2DM were randomized to consume either an energy-restricted (~6 to 7 MJ), planned isocaloric LC or high-carbohydrate, low-fat (HC) diet, combined with a supervised exercise programme (3 days week(-1) ) for

A low-glycemic-load diet improves symptoms in acne vulgaris patients: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Although the pathogenesis of acne is currently unknown, recent epidemiologic studies of non-Westernized populations suggest that dietary factors, including the glycemic load, may be involved. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to determine whether a low-glycemic-load diet improves acne lesion counts in young males. DESIGN: Forty-three male acne patients aged 15-25 y were recruited for a 12-wk, parallel design, dietary intervention incorporating investigator-blinded dermatology assessments. The experimental treatment was a low-glycemic-load diet composed of 25% energy from protein and 4

A high-fat diet attenuates the central response to within-meal satiation signals and modifies the receptor expression of vagal afferents in mice.

During digestion, macronutrients are sensed within the small intestine. This sensory process is dependent upon the action of gut mediators, such as cholecystokinin (CCK) or serotonin (5-HT), on vagal afferents that, in turn, convey peripheral information to the brain to influence the control of food intake. Recent studies have suggested that dietary conditions alter vagal sensitivity to CCK and 5-HT. This phenomenon may be of importance to the onset of eating disorders. The aim of the present study was thus to investigate the effects of subjecting mice to 15 days of either an HF diet (30% fat,

Diet and muscle glycogen concentration in relation to physical performance in Swedish elite ice hockey players.

The effects of carbohydrate (CHO) loading on physical characteristics including muscle fiber distribution, muscle glycogen concentration, and physical performance were studied in two top Swedish ice hockey teams. Players were randomly allocated to two groups: those consuming a CHO-enriched diet (CHO group) and those consuming a mixed diet (controls). Biopsies from the vastus lateralis muscle were taken three times: after Game 1, before Game 2, and after Game 2. Muscle fiber distribution averaged 50 +/- 2% slow twitch fibers (mean +/- 1 SEM). Muscle glycogen concentrations (measured in mmol glu

Clinical and laboratory observations in a child with hepatic phosphorylase kinase deficiency.

A 3-year-old child with glycogenosis due to hepatic phosphorylase kinase deficiency is described. His clinical presentation was unusually severe. Biochemical studies revealed a lack of hypoglycemia, the presence of marked ketosis and hyperlipidemia, and a normal glycemic response to glucagon and to loading with galactose, fructose, and alanine. The ketosis was reversed by glucagon administration. Changes in plasma concentrations of lactate, pyruvate, beta-OH butyrate, and alanine in response to glucagon, galactose, fructose, and alanine administration are reported. The child responded poorly t

The effect of a low glycemic load diet on acne vulgaris and the fatty acid composition of skin surface triglycerides.

BACKGROUND: Dietary factors have long been implicated in acne pathogenesis. It has recently been hypothesized that low glycemic load diets may influence sebum production based on the beneficial endocrine effects of these diets. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of a low glycemic load diet on acne and the fatty acid composition of skin surface triglycerides. METHODS: Thirty-one male acne patients (aged 15-25 years) completed sebum sampling tests as part of a larger 12-week, parallel design dietary intervention trial. The experimental treatment was a low glycemic load diet, comprised of 25% e

Patient experiences of perioperative nutrition within an Enhanced Recovery After Surgery programme for colorectal surgery: a qualitative study.

AIM: Nutrition is an important element of the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) programme. Patients have previously indicated that nutrition is a key component of ERAS that requires improvement. Our aim was to explore the perioperative nutrition experiences of colorectal surgical patients to identify barriers and facilitators to the integration of nutrition within ERAS. METHOD: Sixteen individuals undergoing colorectal surgery participated in a semi-structured interview between postoperative day three and hospital discharge. The topic guide was developed iteratively throughout the study;

Dietary Carbohydrate Intake, Dietary Glycemic Load and Outcomes of In Vitro Fertilization: Findings from an Observational Italian Cohort Study.

In recent decades, increasing attention has been paid to the influence of diet on reproductive health. Carbohydrates in diet affect glucose metabolism and multiple evidences showed the key role of insulin sensitivity in regulating female fertility. We designed a prospective cohort study to investigate the relation between dietary carbohydrate intake, glycemic load (GL) and the outcomes of assisted reproduction. A population of 494 female partners of couples referring to an Italian Fertility Center and eligible for in vitro fertilization (IVF) were enrolled in the study. On the day of the oocyt

The role of obesity, physical activity and dietary factors on the risk for breast cancer: Mexican experience.

We provide an overview of the role of adiposity, physical activity and diet in the risk for breast cancer in Mexican women. Lack of physical activity, diets high in carbohydrates and in glycemic load and low intake of folate and vitamin B12 have been shown to increase the risk of breast cancer in Mexican women, in particular postmenopausal breast cancer. Other dietary factors that may begin to play a more relevant role in breast cancer incidence in Mexico are alcohol intake and vitamin D status. Recommendations to maintain a healthy weight, practice moderate physical activity, decrease intake

Carbohydrates and cardiovascular disease.

Carbohydrates are one of the most significant macronutrients in the human diet. They are necessary for energy metabolism and health. However, the prevalence and progression of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) have been associated with the intake of excessive refined sugars and carbohydrates. This paper provides an overview of the complex relationship between carbohydrates and CVD. Highlights include how simple sugars, starches, and fibers can affect the cardiovascular system. Excessive consumption of high glycemic index, and refined carbohydrates can lead to insulin resistance, dyslipidemia and c

Pre-operative carbohydrate loading prior to elective caesarean delivery: a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Women undergoing elective caesarean deliveries are fasted for long periods prior to surgery and can become catabolic. The use of pre-operative carbohydrate drinks to optimise patients ahead of major surgery is now well established. However, evidence to support this in women undergoing elective caesarean delivery is limited. METHODS: We conducted a single-blind randomised control trial to study the effect of carbohydrate preloading on the presence of urinary ketones in mothers undergoing elective caesarean deliveries compared with standard care, fasting from midnight the night be

Effects of the low-carb organic Mediterranean diet on testosterone levels and sperm DNA fragmentation.

The causes of male infertility can vary. Lifestyles, environmental factors, stressful conditions, and socio-economic conditions are significant factors. Diet plays a crucial role in improving a man's reproductive capacity. The appropriate diet should be diverse and ensure the intake of all the necessary nutrients to enhance sperm quality. The Mediterranean diet, which includes high amounts of vegetables and fruits rich in detoxifying and antioxidant substances, as well as polyphenols, flavonoids, carotenoids, and microelements, especially when consumed with organic foods and a lower carbohydra

Risks of the ketogenic diet in CKD - the con part.

The ketogenic diet is a very low carbohydrate diet that has received a lot of attention for its role in the treatment of type 2 diabetes and obesity. For patients with chronic kidney disease, there is limited evidence on the risks and/or benefits of this diet. However, from the limited evidence that does exist, there are several inferences that can be drawn regarding this diet for patients with kidney disease. The ketogenic diet may not be better than comparator higher carbohydrate diets over the long term. The diet also has low adherence levels in studies lasting ≥12 months. The diet's emphas

Demystifying Carbohydrate Maldigestion: A Clinical Review.

Carbohydrate intolerance is a poorly understood and potentially overlooked cause of unexplained gastrointestinal symptoms, particularly among patients with disorders of gut-brain interaction. Symptoms related to carbohydrate intolerance arise from bacterial fermentation of unabsorbed carbohydrates leading to increased gases and osmotic load within the gastrointestinal tract. This mechanism is shared across various carbohydrates, including lactose, sucrose, maltose, fructose, and fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols. Primary forms of carbohydrate maldigestio

Preoperative carbohydrate loading reduces perioperative insulin resistance and hastens functional recovery of remnant liver after living donor hepatectomy: An open-label randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the effect of preoperative carbohydrate (CHO) loading on perioperative insulin resistance (PIR) and outcomes after live donor hepatectomy. The primary objective of the trial was to compare PIR on postoperative day (POD) 2 between preoperative oral carbohydrate (CHO) loading and overnight fasting groups. The secondary objectives were to compare the functional recovery of the remnant liver, incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) up to 72 h after surgery, inflammatory markers, and length of hospital stay (LOS) between both groups. Dietary carbohydrates and glycaemic load and the incidence of symptomatic gall stone disease in men.

BACKGROUND: Diets with a high glycaemic response exacerbate the metabolic consequences of the insulin resistance syndrome. Their effects on the incidence of gall stone disease are not clear, particularly in men. METHODS: Dietary information was collected as part of the Health Professionals Follow up Study starting in 1986 using a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire with follow up until 1998. On biennial questionnaires participants reported new symptomatic gall stone disease, diagnosed by radiology, and whether they had undergone cholecystectomy. RESULTS: During 12 years of follow u

Glycemic Load, Dietary Fiber, Added Sugar, and Spontaneous Abortion in Two Preconception Cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous abortion (SAB)-pregnancy loss before the 20th week of gestation-has adverse psychological and physical sequelae. Some medical conditions known to affect insulin sensitivity, including polycystic ovary syndrome and diabetes, can affect the risk of SAB. No prior studies have examined glycemic load and incidence of SAB in populations without conditions known to affect insulin sensitivity. OBJECTIVES: We prospectively evaluated the association between preconception glycemic load and intake of carbohydrates, dietary fiber, and added sugar and risk of SAB. METHODS: During 2

Manganese deficiency and toxicity: effects on carbohydrate metabolism in the rat.

Although manganese deficiency and manganese toxicity both have pathological consequences, the underlying biochemical lesions have not been well defined. Manganese is involved in carbohydrate metabolism; either deficiency or excess results in abnormal carbohydrate metabolism. Clinical studies have shown that patients with chronic manganism have hypoglycemia following a glucose load. One report has been published of a diabetic patient who responded to oral manganese with a consistent drop in blood glucose. Rats fed a manganese deficient diet respond to an oral glucose load with a diabetic type o
