Diet during pregnancy in relation to birthweight in healthy singletons.

We have investigated the relationship between consumption of food groups and intake of energy-generating macronutrients on the one hand, and birthweight on the other among apparently healthy singleton, term babies. Three hundred and sixty-eight women who delivered in six maternity clinics in two Greek cities during specified days over an 8-month period completed a 190-item, interviewer-administered, validated, semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire. Study participants also provided information on sociodemographic, reproductive and lifestyle variables. Data were analysed using multiple r

Advancing beyond the "heart-healthy diet" for peripheral arterial disease.

OBJECTIVE: Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a burdensome cardiovascular condition that results from chronic inflammatory insults to the arterial vasculature. Key risk factors include age, gender, type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, hyperhomocysteinemia, smoking, lack of physical fitness, and poor diet, the latter three being modifiable in the development and progression of PAD. A growing body of evidence indicates that imbalanced nutrient intake may contribute to the development and progression of PAD. The purpose of this review is to summarize current knowledge a

Adherence to Healthy and Unhealthy Plant-Based Diets and the Risk of Gout.

IMPORTANCE: Plant-based diets are increasing in popularity due, in part, to their health benefits for selected cardiometabolic diseases as well as favorable environmental impact. Little is known about how such a diet is related to gout risk. OBJECTIVE: To examine associations between adherence to a plant-based diet (including healthy and unhealthy versions of this diet), as well as its 18 individual food groups, and incident gout. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This prospective cohort study used data from population-based cohorts of US men and women enrolled in the Health Professionals F

Self-Reported Effects of Diet on Gastrointestinal Symptoms in Healthy Children.

OBJECTIVES: Evidence on dietary effects on gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms in healthy children is lacking. Despite this, dietary advice is still common practice in the treatment of children's GI symptoms. The aim was to investigate self-reported dietary effects on GI symptoms in healthy children. METHODS: In this observational cross-sectional study on children, a validated self-reporting questionnaire including 90 specified food items was used. Healthy children aged 1-18 years old and their parents were invited to participate. Descriptive data were presented as median (range) and n (%). RESUL

Effect of diet on postprandial glycemic and insulin responses in healthy dogs.

INTRODUCTION: Dog owners have gradually changed their approach, paying more attention to the nutrition and health of their animals. Various pet foods with different ingredients and nutritional characteristics are available on the market. The present study aimed to evaluate the administration of three diets, namely, two grain-free (GF1 and GF2) and one grain-based (CB), with different sources of carbohydrates that can influence the glycemic and insulin postprandial responses in healthy dogs. MATERIALS: Fifteen healthy dogs were dived in three groups and alternatively fed each diet for 50 days.

Quality of Diet of Patients with Coeliac Disease in Comparison to Healthy Children.

A lifelong strict gluten-free diet is the only available treatment for patients with coeliac disease (CD). As with any restrictive diet, it may potentially lead to nutritional deficits. Seventy-six patients with CD (mean age 9.0 ± 4.3 years, 57% female) and 590 healthy controls (HC) (mean age 9.9 ± 0.1 years, 54% female) were recruited and requested to keep a 3-day food record (3DFR). In HC patients, anthropometric data were determined at the time when 3DFRs were collected. In CD patients, anthropometric data were determined at two time points: at diagnosis and at the time of 3DFRs collection.

Healthy diet and lifestyle and risk of stroke in a prospective cohort of women.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between a low-risk lifestyle and risk of stroke. METHODS: The study population comprised 31,696 women, in the population-based Swedish Mammography Cohort who at baseline had completed a questionnaire about diet and lifestyle and were free from cardiovascular disease and cancer. We defined a low-risk lifestyle as a healthy diet (top 50% of a Recommended Food Score), moderate alcohol consumption (5-15 g/d), never smoking, physically active (walking/bicycling ≥40 min/d and exercise ≥1 h/wk), and body mass index below 25 kg/m(2). Sex-Specific Diet-Microbiota Interactions in Ageing: Implications for Healthy Longevity.

Background/Objectives: Diet-microbiota interactions shape ageing; however, their sex-specific dimensions remain poorly defined. Human studies rarely stratify analyses by sex, while most evidence of sex-dependent microbial and metabolic responses comes from preclinical models. This review synthesizes current findings on the sex-specific pathways linking diet, microbiota, and healthy ageing. Methods: A narrative review was conducted by integrating human observational studies, randomized controlled trials, and mechanistic animal research. Evidence was organized into four domains: (1) age-related

Short-Term High-Fat Diet Alters Acetaminophen Metabolism in Healthy Individuals.

BACKGROUND: Acetaminophen is metabolized through a nontoxic sulfation and glucuronidation pathway and toxic oxidation pathway (via CYP2E1 and CYP1A2). A short-term high-fat diet induces alterations in the steatotic liver and may alter hepatic drug enzyme activity. In the case of acetaminophen, these alterations may result in an increased risk of hepatotoxicity. Therefore, this study was conducted to assess the effect of a 3-day hypercaloric high-fat diet on the plasma levels of acetaminophen metabolites. METHODS: Nine healthy subjects participated in this randomized, crossover intervention st

[Malnutrition due to an extremely 'Работает' diet; a new eating disorder?].

A 71-year-old male was admitted to our hospital with heart failure, cachexia and biochemical disturbances due to a diet consisting of exclusively vegetables, oil and water. Our investigations showed that this diet was a consequence of an excessive preoccupation with health. The patient did not meet criteria for an eating disorder or other DSM-IV psychiatric disorder. We conclude that malnutrition due to health fad diets may be an underestimated medical problem. There is no specific psychopathological disorder that covers this behaviour, and there is no knowledge of its epidemiology. Popular li

Midlife healthy-diet index and late-life dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

AIM: To study long-term effects of dietary patterns on dementia and Alzheimer's disease (AD). METHODS: Of 525 subjects randomly selected from population-based cohorts surveyed at midlife, a total of 385 (73%) subjects were re-examined 14 years later in the CAIDE study. A healthy-diet index (range 0-17) was constructed including both healthy and unhealthy dietary components. RESULTS: Persons with a healthy diet (healthy-diet index >8 points) had a decreased risk of dementia (OR 0.12, 95% CI 0.02-0.85) and AD (OR 0.08, 95% CI 0.01-0.89) compared with persons with an unhealthy diet (0-8 points)

[Yellow, but healthy. Report of 4 cases of diet-induced carotenosis].

Four women who had been following a "Работает" diet based on carrots and citrus fruits for some time presented with yellow-tinged skin. All four patients had high carotene levels in the blood, and three were also found to have slightly increased vitamin A levels. The other laboratory test results were normal. They were prescribed diets that did not contain carotene-rich foods, and both skin colour and laboratory tests returned to normal.

Switching to a Healthy Diet Prevents the Detrimental Effects of Western Diet in a Colitis-Associated Colorectal Cancer Model.

Inflammatory bowel disease increases the odds of developing colitis-associated cancer. We hypothesized that Western-style diet (WD) aggravates azoxymethane (AOM)/dextran sulfate sodium salt (DSS)-induced colitis-associated tumorigenesis and that switching to the standard AIN93G diet will ameliorate disease symptoms even after cancer initiation. Female BALB/c mice received either WD (WD group) or standard AIN93G diet (AIN group) for the whole experimental period. After five weeks, the mice received 12.5 mg/kg AOM intraperitoneally, followed by three DSS cycles. In one group of mice, the WD was
