A Low-Protein, High-Carbohydrate Diet Exerts a Neuroprotective Effect on Mice with 1-Methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine-Induced Parkinson's Disease by Regulating the Microbiota-Metabolite-Brain Axis and Fibroblast Growth Factor 21.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is closely linked to lifestyle factors, particularly dietary patterns, which have attracted interest as potential disease-modifying factors. Eating a low-protein, high-carbohydrate (LPHC) diet is a promising dietary intervention against brain aging; however, its protective effect on PD remains elusive. Here, we found that an LPHC diet ameliorated 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrathydropyridine (MPTP)-induced motor deficits, decreased dopaminergic neuronal death, and increased the levels of striatal dopamine, serotonin, and their metabolites in PD mice. Levels of fibrobla

Effects of protein and carbohydrate content of diet on drug conjugation.

Eight healthy subjects were fed a high-protein-low-carbohydrate diet and, after a 3-day washout period, an isocaloric low-protein-high-carbohydrate diet. They received acetaminophen and oxazepam, drugs metabolized primarily by conjugation, on days 11 and 13, respectively, of each diet. Changing the diets of subjects from the high-protein-low-carbohydrate diet to the low-protein-high-carbohydrate diet resulted in a 14% increase in urinary recovery of acetaminophen glucuronide and a 32% increase in urinary recovery of oxazepam glucuronide (p less than 0.05). The increases in glucuronidation were

The low-carbohydrate diet in primary care OB/GYN.

As primary care becomes a larger part of the obstetrician/gynecologist's practice, we are beginning to be relied upon to address and manage fundamental primary care issues such as nutrition, obesity, hypertension, and the risk assessment for heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Evidence is now showing that insulin in chronically excessive amounts plays a significant role in the pathophysiology of these illnesses as well as in polycystic ovarian syndrome and infertility. The recent trend in low-carbohydrate, high-protein dieting may prove to play a significant role in the management of these il

Comparative efficacy of the classical ketogenic diet and modified Atkins diet in children with drug-resistant epilepsy: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder that can severely affect children's cognitive development and quality of life. While anti-seizure medications (ASM) are the first-line treatment, approximately 20-30% of pediatric patients experience drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE), necessitating alternative therapies. The classical ketogenic diet (CKD) and the modified Atkins diet (MAD) are two non-pharmacological interventions that have shown efficacy in reducing seizure frequency in children with DRE. METHODS: A meta-analysis included experimental and observational studies retrieved from

Factors associated with initiation of the modified Atkins diet in adults with drug-resistant epilepsy.

Ketogenic diets are promising therapies for drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE). Diet adherence is a major concern in adults, so a less restrictive diet like the modified Atkins diet (MAD) is preferred. The objective of this study was to explore factors associated with MAD initiation in adults with DRE. It is a retrospective cohort study that includes participants aged ≥ 16 years with at least two failing antiseizure medications (ASM). We compared clinical and demographic variables between those patients who initiated the MAD and those who did not. A total of 136 patients were included and 52 partic

Low-Carbohydrate Diet Exacerbates Denervation-Induced Atrophy of Rat Skeletal Muscle Under the Condition of Identical Protein Intake.

BACKGROUND: While decreased protein intake is associated with muscle mass loss, it is unclear whether a decrease in carbohydrate intake adversely affects muscle atrophy independently of protein intake. Herein, we examined whether a low-carbohydrate (low-CHO) diet exacerbates denervation-induced muscle atrophy under conditions of identical protein intake. METHODS: On day one of the experiment, male Wistar rats underwent unilateral denervation. The contralateral leg was used as the control. After denervation, rats were divided into two dietary groups: high-carbohydrate (high-CHO) and low-CHO. E

Deleterious metabolic effects of high-carbohydrate, sucrose-containing diets in patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.

The effects of variations in dietary carbohydrate and fat intake on various aspects of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism were studied in patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). Two test diets were utilized, and they were consumed in random order over two 15-day periods. One diet was low in fat and high in carbohydrate, and corresponded closely to recent recommendations made by the American Diabetes Association (ADA), containing (as percent of total calories) 20 percent protein, 20 percent fat, and 60 percent carbohydrate, with 10 percent of total calories as sucrose. Can Artificial Intelligence Chatbots Plan Therapeutic Ketogenic Diets for Children With Epilepsy?

RATIONALE: Ketogenic Diet Therapy (KDT) is an effective but complex treatment for paediatric drug-resistant epilepsy. Access to trained dietitians limits the global use of KDT. The increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots for health and dietary advice presents both opportunities and risks. This exploratory study evaluates the accuracy and feasibility of AI-generated KDT plans for paediatric epilepsy. METHODS: We conducted a comparative analysis of three major AI chatbots: ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Gemini. Three clinical vignettes, one for each KDT type, were created to re

Association of maternal low-carbohydrate-diet score during pregnancy with allergic diseases at 2 years of age.

BACKGROUND: We prospectively evaluated the association between low-carbohydrate-diet (LCD) score during pregnancy and the risk of allergic diseases in infants up to 2 years. METHODS: Participants were from a prospective mother-offspring cohort study in Wuhan, China. LCD score was calculated according to the percentage of dietary energy intake from carbohydrate, protein, and fat assessed in late pregnancy using validated food frequency questionnaires. Allergic diseases, including immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated allergic diseases, allergic contact dermatitis, and food allergy, were recorded at

Beyond Ketosis: Dietary Therapies and the Microbiota-Gut-Brain Axis in Epilepsy.

Background: Epilepsy is a complex neurological disorder in which growing evidence supports a significant role for the microbiota-gut-brain axis (MGBA) in modulating neuroinflammation, neuronal excitability, and treatment responsiveness. Beyond their traditional role in inducing ketosis, dietary therapies may influence epilepsy by modulating gut microbial ecology, intestinal barrier integrity, immune signaling, and microbiota-derived metabolites. Methods: This narrative review critically examines current clinical and experimental evidence regarding the relationship between epilepsy, gut microbi

[Polycystic ovary syndrome and obesity: non pharmacological approaches].

In patients affected of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), obesity has an high percent of incidence and represents an important factor increasing its clinic evolution, both in metabolic than in reproductive terms. For these patients non pharmacologic treatments aimed at the reduction of body weight, such as diets and physical exercise, represent the first line therapeutic approach. The aim of this review is to analyze the changes in life style and to highlight their efficacy in reducing the negative effects of PCOS on metabolism and reproductivity. Specifically different types of diet have been

Dietary approaches to epilepsy treatment: old and new options on the menu.

Dietary therapies represent a potentially valuable adjunct to other epilepsy treatments, such as anticonvulsant medications, epilepsy surgery, and vagus nerve stimulation. Although the ketogenic diet (high fat, adequate protein, low carbohydrate) is the most well-established dietary therapy for epilepsy, other possible approaches include the Atkins diet (high fat, high protein, low carbohydrate), a diet enriched in polyunsaturated fatty acids, or overall restriction of calorie intake. This review discusses the current clinical status of each of these dietary approaches and suggests possible me

Dietary carbohydrate deprivation increases 24-hour nitrogen excretion without affecting postabsorptive hepatic or whole body protein metabolism in healthy men.

Because insulin is an important regulator of protein metabolism, we hypothesized that physiological modulation of insulin secretion, by means of extreme variations in dietary carbohydrate content, affects postabsorptive protein metabolism. Therefore, we studied the effects of three isocaloric diets with identical protein content and low-carbohydrate/high-fat (2% and 83% of total energy, respectively), intermediate-carbohydrate/intermediate-fat (44% and 41% of total energy, respectively), and high-carbohydrate/low-fat (85% and 0% of total energy, respectively) content in six healthy men. A balanced carbohydrate: protein diet in the management of Parkinson's disease.

Although restricting dietary protein is a proposed adjunct to treating Parkinson's disease (PD), the effect of carbohydrate consumption is unknown. We measured plasma levodopa and large neutral amino acid (LNAA) levels in nine PD patients treated with carbidopa/levodopa and different isocaloric meals containing high protein-low carbohydrate, low protein-high carbohydrate, and balanced 5:1 carbohydrate:protein mixtures. We found that levodopa levels increased significantly regardless of the type of diet, but that plasma LNAA levels varied less and motor performance was superior after the balanc

Dietary protein intake and obesity-associated cardiometabolic function.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: High-protein intake is commonly recommended to help people manage body weight. However, high-protein intake could have adverse health consequences. Here we review the latest findings concerning the effect of high-protein intake on cardiometabolic health. RECENT FINDINGS: Calorie-reduced, high-protein, low-carbohydrate diets lower plasma glucose in people with type 2 diabetes (T2D). However, when carbohydrate intake is not markedly reduced, high-protein intake often does not alter plasma glucose and increases insulin and glucagon concentrations, which are risk factors for T2

Nutrition in renal transplantation.

This study was conducted to determine whether a high-nitrogen, low-carbohydrate diet in the immediate post-operative renal transplant period could result in a positive nitrogen balance and fewer cushingoid side effects. Twelve consecutive nondiabetic renal transplant recipients were randomly assigned to the isocaloric control or experimental diet group. The six patients ingesting the experimental diet achieved positive nitrogen balance whereas five of the six patients on the control diet had a negative nitrogen balance. The nitrogen balance varied directly and proportionately with the protein

Modified Atkins ketogenic diet improves heart and skeletal muscle function in glycogen storage disease type III.

Glycogen storage disease type III (GSDIII) management in adult patients includes a high-protein diet with cornstarch supplementation to maintain a normal level of glucose in the blood. This regimen can prevent hypoglycaemia but does not seem to improve skeletal muscle and heart function. A 34 years-old patient with GSD IIIa with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy was then treated with a modified Atkins ketogenic diet. After 12 months of treatment ejection fraction raised from 30 to 45%, liver enzymes were reduced and CK plasma level dropped from 568 to 327 U/l. Physical activity increased from about

Alcoholic liver disease in rats fed ethanol as part of oral or intragastric low-carbohydrate liquid diets.

The intragastric administration of ethanol as part of a low-carbohydrate diet results in alcohol hepatotoxicity. We aimed to investigate whether comparable liver injury can be achieved by oral diet intake. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed ethanol as part of low-carbohydrate diets for 36-42 days either intragastrically or orally. Liver pathology, blood ethanol concentration, serum alanine amino transferase (ALT), endotoxin level, hepatic CYP2E1 induction, and cytokine profiles were assessed. Both oral and intragastric low-carbohydrate ethanol diets resulted in marked steatosis with additional

Therapeutic Implications of Diet in Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Related Immune-Mediated Inflammatory Diseases.

Despite being a focal issue to patients, the effect of diet on adult inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) remains underexplored with limited guidance. While promising clinical trials are currently underway, there is a need for further evidence-based recommendations. As such, we summarize the current evidence on various diets used in the treatment of IBD and also explore the potential applications of dietary data from related immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMIDs), such as rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis, to provide additional information to inform IBD providers. To date, there have been
