Plant-based diets are increasingly popular worldwide. A well-planned plant-based diet lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and certain cancers. In contrast, a poorly planned plant-based diet increases the risk of certain micronutrient deficiencies, chiefly, vitamin B12 (B12). Because B12 is not present in plants or in unfortified plant-based foodstuffs, the safest way to prevent its deficiency in plant-based diets is to take an oral B12 supplement. Studies determining the dose and frequency of B12 to be taken by healthy individuals on a plant-based diet to support an adeq

Traditional dietary guidelines for patients with kidney disease recommend restriction of plant foods due to concerns about hyperkalemia and associated adverse events. Studies conducted over several decades have shown that the basis for these guidelines does not match the evidence. Serum potassium levels can be elevated in patients with reduced kidney function after consumption of foods with potassium-based additives or with highly concentrated potassium content such as juices, dried fruit, or purees. However, plant foods may have certain qualities that may blunt potassium retention including t

In recent years, a growing body of evidence has emerged on the benefits of plant-based diets for the prevention and treatment of lifestyle diseases. In parallel, data now exist regarding the treatment of chronic kidney disease and its most common complications with this dietary pattern. Improving the nutrient quality of foods consumed by patients by including a higher proportion of plant-based foods while reducing total and animal protein intake may reduce the need for or complement nephroprotective medications, improve kidney disease complications, and perhaps favorably affect disease progres

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) are significant health concerns for older adults globally. Plant-based diets (PBDs) are a potential non-invasive lifestyle strategy to address the risk factors common to both conditions. Research on plant-based diets and older adults is limited, especially when it comes to the overlap between the development of CVD and AD. This theoretical paper examines the relationships between PBDs, AD, and CVD through the integration of six theories and concepts: the vascular hypothesis, microbiota-gut-brain axis (MGBA) theory, neurovascular unit (N

Supporting population-level dietary transitions to plant-based diets (PBDs) for human and environmental health demands a comprehensive understanding of lived experience and human behavior. This study examined how diverse identities shape PBD behavior. Using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and Intersectionality, we implemented multi-group structural equation models with a national sample of US rural adults (n = 1908) to predict adherence to a PBD. In the main model, attitude (β = 1.117, p < 0.001) was the only predictor of intention to consume a PBD. Intention (β=0.630, p < 0.001) and perc

IMPORTANCE: Plant-based diets are associated with many health and environmental benefits, including primary prevention of fatal prostate cancer, but less is known about postdiagnostic plant-based diet patterns in individuals with prostate cancer.
OBJECTIVE: To examine whether postdiagnostic plant-based dietary patterns are associated with risk of prostate cancer progression and prostate cancer-specific mortality.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This longitudinal observational cohort study included men with biopsy-proven nonmetastatic prostate cancer (stage ≤T3a) from the diet and lifestyl

IMPORTANCE: Previous research has found that vegetarian diets are associated with lower bone mineral density and higher risk of fractures, but these studies did not differentiate the quality of the plant-based foods.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between the quality of plant-based diets (not necessarily vegan but also omnivorous) and hip fracture risk among postmenopausal women in the Nurses' Health Study.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study analyzed data from 70 285 postmenopausal women who participated in the US Nurses' Health Study from 1984 through 2014. Data wer

IMPORTANCE: Plant-based diets are increasing in popularity due, in part, to their health benefits for selected cardiometabolic diseases as well as favorable environmental impact. Little is known about how such a diet is related to gout risk.
OBJECTIVE: To examine associations between adherence to a plant-based diet (including healthy and unhealthy versions of this diet), as well as its 18 individual food groups, and incident gout.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This prospective cohort study used data from population-based cohorts of US men and women enrolled in the Health Professionals F

BACKGROUND: Plant-based diets have been associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease in nonpregnant adults, but specific evidence for their effects on risk of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy is scarce.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the prospective association between adherence to plant-based diets before pregnancy and the risk for hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. We hypothesized that women with higher adherence to plant-based diets would have a lower risk for hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.
STUDY DESIGN: We followed 11,459 parous women (16,780 singleton pregn

BACKGROUND: The Mediterranean diet and other dietary patterns rich in fruits and vegetables have been linked to lower risk of frailty in older adults. However, not all plant-based diets are necessarily healthful, and no previous study has evaluated the role of the quality of plant-based dietary patterns in frailty risk. Our aim was to assess the association between plant-based diet quality and risk of frailty.
METHODS: Prospective cohort consisted with 82 234 women aged ≥60 years from the Nurses' Health Study, who were followed from 1990 through 2014. The dates of analysis were April 14 to Ju

OBJECTIVE: Plant-based diets can delay the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and help manage complications and co-morbid conditions such as hypertension, acidosis, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. However, it is unclear how often plant-based diets are recommended to patients with kidney disease. The objective of this study was to understand nephrology professionals' familiarity, perception, and recommendation of plant-based diets to people with kidney disease.
DESIGN AND METHODS: A survey to understand perception of recommendation of plant-based diets for patients with CKD was

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Plant-based diets have been used with growing popularity for the treatment of a wide range of lifestyle-related diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, and obesity. With the reinvigoration of the dietary management of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and the use of low protein diets for secondary prevention of CKD to delay or prevent dialysis therapy, there is an increasing interest in the potential role of plant-based diets for these patients.
RECENT FINDINGS: Recently, a body of evidence related to the role of plant-based diets in preventing CKD has reemerged. Several obs

Cancer remains a major public health challenge among women worldwide, and diet quality may play an important role in cancer prevention. This narrative review synthesized evidence on the association between standardized diet quality indices-the DASH Score, Mediterranean Diet Score, and plant-based diet indices-and the risk of selected cancers in women, focusing on breast, colorectal, and ovarian cancer. English-language publications from 2020 to 2026 were reviewed, supplemented by key earlier methodological and epidemiological sources. The most consistent inverse associations were observed for

PURPOSE: A growing body of evidence has emerged on the role of diet for health outcomes in cancer survivors. Patients transitioning to post-treatment care may seek guidance on dietary changes, and summaries of the evidence for dietary patterns recommended by guidelines can support providers in effectively answering questions. Increasing evidence suggests that food choices impact planetary health. Plant-based diets are one eating pattern that may improve patient outcomes and planetary health.
METHODS: We performed a literature review and used narrative reporting to summarize evidence for plant

BackgroundWhile global nutrition policies increasingly promote plant-based diets for environmental sustainability, this approach may implicitly assume biological homogeneity and overlook interindividual genetic variability in nutrient metabolism.AimThis review evaluates potential molecular bottlenecks and genetic variations that may influence individual adaptation to plant-based dietary patterns, based on recent literature in nutrigenetics and micronutrient metabolism.MethodsPeer-reviewed literature published primarily between 2015 and 2025 was searched across PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopu

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Although plant-based diets are recommended for cancer prevention, their role in cancer survival is still uncertain. The purpose of this systematic review is to summarize the association between postdiagnosis plant-based diets and prognosis in cancer survivors.
RECENT FINDINGS: There is indication that higher intake of plant-based foods was associated with improved prognosis in cancer survivors. For colorectal cancer survival, a better prognosis was observed for a high intake of whole grains and fibre. For breast cancer survival, a higher intake of fruit, vegetable and fibre

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: An increase in awareness of vegetarian and vegan (plant-based) diets has brought forth numerous studies on their effects on health. The study of nutrition-based factors affecting bone health is difficult, given the length of time before clinical effects are evident. Furthermore, population-based studies must account for strong confounding influences as effects may be because of association, not causality. Yet, it is highly plausible that dietary factors affect bone remodeling in multiple ways. Plant-based diets may alter macronutrient and micronutrient balance, may cause dif

BACKGROUND: We assert that the ubiquitous environmental factor in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is our westernized diet. Therefore, all of our newly diagnosed patients were admitted to experience a plant-based diet (PBD). In the present study, we investigated the efficacy of a PBD in pregnant women with IBD.
CASE DESCRIPTION: Included in the study were women with IBD provided with a PBD (lacto-ovo-vegetarian diet) between 2004 and 2020 who were either pregnant or became pregnant. There were 10 pregnancies in eight cases: seven cases of ulcerative colitis (UC) and one case of Crohn's diseas

Consumption of a diet high in saturated fat has been associated with daytime sleepiness. A whole-food plant-based (WFPB) dietary pattern, which is low in saturated fat, has been shown to be beneficial in a variety of health conditions. We assessed the effect of a short-term (21 days) WFPB diet intervention on daytime sleepiness in 14 patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). We found a mean decrease of 3.8 points (SD = 3.3, p = 0.003) on the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) after switching from a standard Western diet to a WFPB diet. Our results suggest that a WFPB diet could be a viable diet
