Vegetarian Diet Reduced Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease in a Nationwide Longitudinal Survey in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This large, longitudinal follow-up cohort study aimed to explore how being a vegetarian and related factors impacted the incident gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in a comprehensive Taiwanese cohort. METHODS: The study cohort was enrolled from the Taiwan Biobank. Vegetarian status, duration of being a vegetarian, type of vegetarian diet, and whether or not the participants had GERD were recorded from self-reported surveys. Associations between vegetarian status, duration, and type of diet with incident GERD were analyzed with multivariate logistic regression with

The severity of dieting and bingeing behaviors in college women: interview validation of survey data.

A combined survey and interview study was conducted to validate a categorical Dieting and Bingeing Severity Scale (DBSS), and to estimate the prevalence of eating disorders in young women. We hypothesized that assignment to the DBSS categories would be confirmed by clinical interviews such that interview-diagnosed eating disorders would be found with increasing frequency and severity at the upper end of the DBSS. Freshmen college women (n = 1367) completed a survey instrument addressing the frequency and severity of dieting, binge-eating, and other behaviors and attitudes related to weight con

[Diet survey based on family food consumption: the case of Ilheus, Bahia, in 1979].

A simplified method was used to analyze the diets of 31 poor families in the city of Ilhéus, Bahia, Brazil. The results are presented in terms of frequency of foods consumed, nutritional density and theoretical adequacy of the diet. Intrafamilial distribution of food intake was not considered in the analysis. Results show that the home diet was very limited in variety; only eight of the 46 items in the dietary frequency were consumed by 50% or more of the sample. Nutrient density was low for calcium, riboflavin, vitamin A and zinc. Energy density, as measured by the ratio of fat calories to pr

Sleeping green: an Italian survey for the assessment of the relationship between sleep and vegetarian diet.

PURPOSE: Plant-based diets are beneficial for health and sleep. Nevertheless, results on the relationship between entirely vegetarian (veg) diets and sleep are scarce and heterogeneous, and many relevant variables are rarely considered. We hypothesize that veg diets may be differently related to several sleep measures considering the role of other intervening factors. METHODS: We used an online survey to collect self-reported data about dietary patterns, sleep quality, insomnia symptoms, sleepiness, obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) risk, and sleep-related movement disorders. Socidemographic var

Adherence to a Mediterranean Diet and Thyroid Function in Obesity: A Cross-Sectional Apulian Survey.

Much research suggests that Mediterranean eating habits and lifestyle contribute to counteract the risk of chronic diseases while promoting longevity, but little information is available on the effects of the Mediterranean diet (Med-Diet) on thyroid function, particularly among overweight/obese subjects. Nevertheless, consistent data reported a slight increase in serum levels of the thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and a higher rate of conversion of thyroxine (T4) to triiodothyronine (T3) in obesity. This cross-sectional study was aimed at investigating the relationship between adherence to t

The impact of a gluten-free diet on adults with coeliac disease: results of a national survey.

UNLABELLED: OBJECTIVE We sought to evaluate the impact of the gluten-free diet on the 5,240 members of the Canadian Celiac Association (CCA). Data are presented on 2,681 adults (>or=16 years) with biopsy-proven celiac disease (CD). METHODS: A mail-out survey was used. Quality of life was evaluated using the 'SF12', and celiac-specific questions. RESULTS: Mean age was 56 years, mean age at diagnosis was 45 years, and 75% were female. The 'SF12' summary scores were similar to normative Canadian data, but were significantly lower for females and newly diagnosed patients. Respondents reported: f

Association of breakfast energy density with diet quality and body mass index in American adults: National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys, 1999-2004.

BACKGROUND: Recent reports suggest that dietary energy density (ED) is associated with diet quality, energy intake, and body weight. Breakfast consumption was also associated with diet quality and body weight; however, little is known about the association of breakfast consumption with dietary ED. OBJECTIVES: We examined differences in the ED (in energy content/g of food) of diets between breakfast consumers and nonconsumers, and in breakfast reporters we examined the association of ED of breakfast foods with ED of nonbreakfast foods, diet quality, and body mass index (BMI; in kg/m(2)). Intake of ultra-processed foods in Sweden and its association with diet quality and weight status: cross-sectional analyses from three national dietary surveys.

BACKGROUND: Ultra-processed foods (UPF) contribute substantially to energy intake in many countries and have been linked to poorer nutrient profiles and increased risk for excess body weight. Swedish data on UPF intake and its relation to diet quality and weight status are lacking. METHODS: Data were derived from the three most recent Swedish national dietary surveys: Riksmaten (RM)-Adults (2010-2011; n = 1797), RM-Adolescents (2016-2017; n = 3099), and RM-Young Children (2021-2024; n = 1820). Diet and predation risk affect tissue and excretion nutrients of Trinidadian guppies: a field survey.

Consumers vary in their excretion of nitrogen and phosphorus, altering nutrient cycles and ecosystem function. Traditional mass balance models that focus on dietary and tissue nutrients have poorly explained such variation in excretion. Here, we contrast diet and tissue nutrient models for nutrient excretion with predation risk, an often overlooked factor, using the Trinidadian guppy (Poecilia reticulata) as our model system. We surveyed guppies at 12 sites spread across two streams with parallel gradients in food quality and predation risk. At each site, we assessed guppy diet, tissue nitroge

Dietary patterns and cardiovascular risk markers in the UK Low Income Diet and Nutrition Survey.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Dietary patterns have been associated with various disease risk markers. There is presently little representative data about the dietary patterns of adults on low income. The objective was therefore to identify dietary patterns and how they relate to cardiovascular (CVD) risk markers in this specific population. METHODS AND RESULTS: Exploratory factor analysis was performed to examine dietary patterns in participants from the UK Low Income Diet and Nutrition Survey (n=2931, aged 49.4+/-20.2 years, 65% female). Dietary intake was assessed from three 24h dietary recalls and

Body composition of patients on a very low-protein diet: a two-year survey with DEXA.

BACKGROUND: It has been reported that patients on a very-low-protein diet (VLPD) maintain a satisfactory nutritional status because of a conserved adaptive metabolic response. However, only few studies have examined the course of nutritional status and body composition in the long term (2 years). METHODS: Thirteen stable patients (8 men; age, 55 +/- 12 years; glomerular filtration rate (GFR), 15 +/- 5 mL/min) receiving a VLPD (0.3 g/kg/day protein) supplemented with amino acids and ketoanalogues (SVLPD) were studied for 2 years. Turkish Psychometric Properties of the Gluten-Free Diet Adherence Survey for Children With Coeliac Disease.

PURPOSE: Coeliac disease is a chronic autoimmune condition that significantly impairs health and quality of life if not managed through strict dietary adherence. Given that existing adherence assessment tools are primarily designed for adults, a child-focused, noninvasive scale is needed to accurately evaluate gluten-free diet compliance in the paediatric population. This study aimed to evaluate the Turkish psychometric properties of an adapted Gluten-Free Diet Adherence Survey originally designed for adults but modified for children aged 9-18 years with coeliac disease. METHODS: A cross-sect

Gluten-free diet or alternative therapy: a survey on what parents of celiac children want.

OBJECTIVES: Celiac disease (CD) is treated by life-long gluten-free diet (GFD). Novel therapies are under development. Willingness of CD children's parents to alternative therapies and GFD impact were evaluated. METHODS: Parents of celiac children on GFD were investigated on need and preference for novel CD therapies, children's enrolment in trials, compliance to and personal judgment on GFD, health status (HS) and quality of life (QoL). RESULTS: About 59.5% surveyed parents expressed the need for alternative therapies with a preference for vaccine-based strategy (39.9%). About 37.7% would a

A survey of calcium urolithiasis in normocalcemic hypercalciuria: possible role of nutrients and diet-mediated factors.

Three types of hypercalciuria are described; their existence and frequent association with calcium urolithiasis in humans are accepted. Various dietary factors such as minerals, electrolytes, fluids, vitamin D, carbohydrates, proteins are discussed with regard to their ability to alter the nature and the degree of calcium excretion following their ingestion. It is emphasised that at present we have only limited knowledge on the chain of events linking calorie intake and the response of the kidney.

Association between Inflammatory Potential of Diet and Bone-Mineral Density in Korean Postmenopausal Women: Data from Fourth and Fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys.

Post menopause is considered a critical period for bone-mass loss. Impaired bone metabolism during this phase can increase the risk of fractures in old age. Inflammation is a risk factor for bone health, and diet is a potential source of inflammation. However, few studies have examined the association between the dietary inflammatory index (DII®) and bone-mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women in Korea. The objective of this study was to determine, by means of a Korean cross-sectional investigation, whether higher DII scores are associated with decreased BMD in postmenopausal women. To

Patient-Reported Experiences with a Low-Carbohydrate Ketogenic Diet: An International Survey in Patients with McArdle Disease.

The low-carbohydrate ketogenic diet (LCKD) has attracted increased attention in recent years as a potential treatment option for individuals with McArdle disease (glycogen storage disease type V), and despite the absence of strong scientific evidence of the LCKD's benefits, increased numbers of individuals with McArdle disease have tried a LCKD. The objective of this study was to collect patient-reported experiences with a LCKD. We aimed to estimate the immediate prevalence of individuals that had tried a LCKD in an international McArdle disease cohort, and we aimed to report on the patient-re

Diet Quality and Mortality among Chinese Adults: Findings from the China Health and Nutrition Survey.

The association between diet quality and all-cause mortality in Chinese population is unclear. We aimed to study the associations of three a priori diet quality indices-including the Diet Quality Index-International (DQI-I), Chinese Healthy Eating Index (CHEI), and energy-adjusted Dietary Inflammatory Index (E-DII)-and their included components with all-cause mortality. We used baseline data from the 2004, 2006, 2009, and 2011 waves of the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS). We used a multivariable-adjusted Cox model to examine the associations between DQI-I, CHEI, and E-DII with all-cau
