The influence of dietary carbohydrates on experimental infection with Trichuris suis in pigs.

Two experiments (Exps 1 and 2) were carried out to study the effect of dietary carbohydrates on the establishment of Trichuris suis in pigs. Two experimental diets based on barley flour were used; Diet 1 was supplemented with non-fermentable carbohydrates from oat hull meal, while Diet 2 was supplemented with fermentable carbohydrates from sugar beet fibre and inulin. In Exp. 1, thirty-two pigs were allocated randomly into 4 groups. Two groups were fed Diet 1 and 2 groups were fed Diet 2. Pigs from one of each diet group were inoculated with 2000 infective T. suis eggs each and the other two g…

Multi-omics analysis provides insights into mechanisms of intestinal fungi adaptation to dietary carbohydrates.

Carbohydrates are essential energy sources in the diets of humans and animals, yet the mechanisms underlying their utilization by gut fungi remain poorly understood. To address this gap, we employed Candida albicans-a prevalent gut fungal species in humans and pigs-as a model to investigate fungal carbohydrate utilization strategies. Using a multi-omics approach integrating transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses, we examined fungal growth dynamics, carbohydrate degradation patterns, and enzyme activity during in vitro fermentation. Our results revealed that C. albicans preferentially utilizes

Alternative Dietary Patterns for Americans: Low-Carbohydrate Diets.

The decades-long dietary experiment embodied in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA) focused on limiting fat, especially saturated fat, and higher carbohydrate intake has coincided with rapidly escalating epidemics of obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D) that are contributing to the progression of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and other diet-related chronic diseases. Moreover, the lack of flexibility in the DGA as it pertains to low carbohydrate approaches does not align with the contemporary trend toward precision nutrition. We argue that personalizing the level of dietary carbohydrate shou

Pathogenesis and etiology of essential hypertension: role of dietary carbohydrate.

The development of essential hypertension (EH) is proposed to be the result of a cascade of metabolic alterations, with high insulin levels/hyperinsulinemia and an abnormal reaction to the vasodilatory effect of insulin as the initiating factors. It is well established that insulin causes vasodilatation of peripheral resistance vessels. In normal subjects, this insulin-induced vasodilatation and decrease of the peripheral vascular resistance (PVR) is compensated by an SNS-mediated re-vasoconstriction in order to avoid hypotension, with the net effect of a slight decrease in blood pressure and

Dietary carbohydrate deficits and hypoglycaemia in the young diabetic on holiday.

On two British Diabetic Association Educational Holidays, 67 children aged 6-9 years had their diabetic management analysed and hypoglycaemic episodes recorded. The average pre-camp carbohydrate prescription of the children was found to be 44 g below minimal recommended values. Hypoglycaemic episodes were more frequent in those with greater carbohydrate deficits and morning insulin doses in excess of 0.7 U/kg. The management of the young diabetic at camp should include a pre-camp analysis with appropriate adjustment of diet and insulin to minimize hypoglycaemic crises. Guideline figures are pr

Unrefined carbohydrate and dietary fibre in treatment of diabetes mellitus.

Sixteen diabetics were studied over six-week periods on two diets--a conventional carbohydrate-restricted diet and a diet which excluded all refined (fibre-depleted) carbohydrate but which allowed unrefined (fibre-intact) carbohydrate freely. On the latter, there was a substantial increase in dietary fibre intake. Despite this, there was no change in 24-h urinary excretion of glucose nor in blood glycosylated haemoglobin concentration, and there was only a modest improvement in post-prandial plasma glucose concentration. We suggest that simply switching from refined to unrefined cereal foods w

Dietary Carbohydrates, Genetic Susceptibility, and Gout Risk: A Prospective Cohort Study in the UK.

This study aimed to investigate the associations between carbohydrate intake and gout risk, along with interactions between genetic susceptibility and carbohydrates, and the mediating roles of biomarkers. We included 187,387 participants who were free of gout at baseline and completed at least one dietary assessment in the UK Biobank. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate the associations between carbohydrate intake and gout risk. Over a median follow-up of 11.69 years, 2548 incident cases of gout were recorded. Total carbohydrate intake was associated with a reduced gout risk (

The effect of dietary carbohydrates in women with polycystic ovary syndrome: a systematic review.

Weight loss improves ovulation, testosterone levels and insulin resistance in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), but the optimal diet composition is disputed. A diet low in carbohydrates (LCD) may be superior to a standard diet in terms of improving fertility, endocrine/metabolic parameters, weight loss and satiety in women with PCOS. The aim of the present study was to review the literature on the effects of LCD in PCOS, and to summarize the findings into evidence-based guidelines. A literature review based on publications in PubMed and Cochrane was carried out. The outcomes durin

Dietary carbohydrate intake and health-related outcomes: a protocol for the evidence evaluation methodology for the new guideline on dietary carbohydrate intake of the German nutrition society.

PURPOSE: This protocol outlines the rigorous process for developing the new German guideline on dietary carbohydrate intake and its impact on health-related outcomes, building on a substantial body of evidence regarding carbohydrate quantity and quality. METHODS: A professional guideline panel has been established, and research questions have been formulated a-priori. The novel methodological approach follows a structured process and adheres to established recommendations for guidelines. RESULTS: Umbrella reviews of systematic reviews with meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials or pro

Modulatory effects of ingesting dietary fiber and protein before carbohydrates on postprandial interstitial glucose responses.

Rapid postprandial elevations in interstitial glucose contribute to the progression of type 2 diabetes and associated vascular complications. Nutritional sequencing strategies, such as consuming dietary fiber or protein before carbohydrate intake, have been proposed to attenuate glucose excursions by delaying gastric emptying, stimulating incretin secretion, and enhancing insulin responsiveness. However, observational evidence under real-world conditions remains scarce in both healthy individuals and those with diabetes. We performed an observational study including healthy participants and in

Dietary proportions of carbohydrates, fat, and protein and risk of oesophageal cancer by histological type.

BACKGROUND: Dietary habits influence the risk of cancer of the oesophagus and oesophago-gastric junction, but the role of proportions of the main dietary macronutrients carbohydrates, fats and proteins is uncertain. METHODS: Data was derived from a nationwide Swedish population-based case-control study conducted in 1995-1997, in which case ascertainment was rapid, and all cases were uniformly classified. Information on the subjects' history of dietary intake was collected in personal interviews. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using logistic regression, wi

Associations between types and sources of dietary carbohydrates and liver fat: a UK Biobank study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Excess energy intake can lead to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), but the relationship between dietary carbohydrate intake and liver fat content remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the associations between types and sources of dietary carbohydrates and liver fat content. METHODS: UK Biobank participants with no pre-existing diabetes, liver disease or cardiovascular disease reported dietary intake of types and sources of carbohydrates (total carbohydrates, free sugars, non-free sugars, starch from whole grains, starch from refined …

Certain dietary carbohydrates promote Listeria infection in a guinea pig model, while others prevent it.

It has been proposed that dietary non-digestible carbohydrates can improve host resistance to intestinal infections by stimulating health-promoting bacteria in the gut. However, evidence from in vivo infection studies is scarce, particularly for gram-positive infections. We studied the effect of five non-digestible carbohydrates on the resistance of guinea pigs to Listeria monocytogenes infections. Animals were fed a diet supplemented with 10% xylooligosaccharides (XOS), galactooligosaccharides (GOS), inulin, apple pectin or polydextrose for three weeks before oral infection with a mixture of

Dietary carbohydrates and glycaemic load and the incidence of symptomatic gall stone disease in men.

BACKGROUND: Diets with a high glycaemic response exacerbate the metabolic consequences of the insulin resistance syndrome. Their effects on the incidence of gall stone disease are not clear, particularly in men. METHODS: Dietary information was collected as part of the Health Professionals Follow up Study starting in 1986 using a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire with follow up until 1998. On biennial questionnaires participants reported new symptomatic gall stone disease, diagnosed by radiology, and whether they had undergone cholecystectomy. RESULTS: During 12 years of follow u

Dietary carbohydrate modifies the density of L cells in the chicken ileum.

Glucagon-like peptides (GLPs) are secreted from intestinal L cells and stimulate various physiological functions in the gastrointestinal tract. The secretion of GLPs is influenced by macronutrient ingestion. This study aims to clarify the effects of dietary carbohydrate (CHO) on L cells in the chicken ileum. Six-week-old, male White Leghorn chickens were divided into three groups: control, low-CHO and CHO-free, with five chickens in each group. Paraffin sections were made from the proximal and distal ileum of each animal and subjected to immunohistochemistry for GLP-1 and GLP-2 peptides and in

The influence of dietary carbohydrate and deferoxamine on developing copper deficiency of rats.

The present investigation was conducted to follow the development of copper deficiency in male rats from weaning (day 0) to day 31 of dietary copper deprivation and to correlate changes in tissue sizes with copper and iron concentrations. Male rats were fed for 31 days from weaning copper-deficient or adequate diets containing fructose or starch. Another copper-deficient group of rats that was fed fructose was treated with deferoxamine. Rats were killed at day 0, 8, 16, 24, and 31 of the study. In general, no correlation could be found between the development of heart hypertrophy, pancreatic a

The severity of copper deficiency in rats is determined by the type of dietary carbohydrate.

The purpose of this investigation was to study the interaction between copper and dietary carbohydrates on clinical and enzymatic indices associated with copper deficiency. Copper deficiency was produced in rats by feeding diets adequate in all nutrients including selenium and chromium, but marginal in copper (1.2 micrograms/g diet) containing 62% of either starch, fructose, or glucose. During the fifth week, the fructose of the copper-deficient diet (20 rats) was replaced by either starch (10 rats) or by glucose (10 rats). The experiment was terminated after 11 weeks. Copper deficiency in rat…
