Quantification of the fate of dietary fiber in humans by a newly developed radiolabeled fiber marker.

A radiolabeled cellulose (131I-fiber) that retains the essential physical and chemical properties of this class of fiber was developed in our laboratory. We quantified the fate of orally ingested 131I-fiber in healthy individuals by external gamma camera monitoring and fecal collections. The marker passes virtually intact through the human gastrointestinal tract with negligible release and absorption of the label in the gut. Comparison of the gastric emptying rate of 131I-fiber with that of a predominantly aqueous marker, 99mTc-diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (99mTc-DTPA), showed that 131I

The benefits of dietary fiber: the gastrointestinal tract and beyond.

Dietary fiber is considered an essential constituent of a healthy child's diet. Diets of healthy children with adequate dietary fiber intake are characterized by a higher diet quality, a higher nutrient density, and a higher intake of vitamins and minerals in comparison to the diets of children with poor dietary fiber intake. Nevertheless, a substantial proportion of children do not meet the recommended dietary fiber intake. This is especially true in those children with kidney diseases, as traditional dietary recommendations in kidney diseases have predominantly focused on the quantities of e

Protective mechanisms of dietary fibers in nutritional carcinogenesis.

Fibers in foods are complex carbohydrates. There are several types of fiber, but, for the purpose of mechanistic insight into their mode of protective action in carcinogenesis, classification into two broad types, soluble and insoluble fibers, is warranted. Soluble fibers are present in fruits, vegetables, and certain grains like oats. This type of fiber undergoes metabolism in the small intestine and especially in the large intestine through bacterial enzymes, converting it to products that increase stool size only moderately. But, they have appreciable effects in modifying the metabolism of

Dietary fiber in the reduction of colon cancer risk.

The evidence for an inverse association between a diet of foods high in fiber and colon cancer risk is reviewed in the context of the epidemiological criteria for causality. Five criteria are assessed: consistency of the association, strength of the association, specificity of the hypothesis, temporal relationship of the association, and coherence of the association. Forty epidemiological studies, described in 55 original reports, are analyzed in terms of an association between fiber intake and colon cancer. This evaluation clearly suggests a relationship between colon cancer and diet low in f

Dietary Fiber: An Opportunity for a Global Control of Hyperlipidemia.

Dietary fiber has a long history in the intervention study of hyperlipidemia. In this review, current understandings of structures, sources, and natures of various kinds of dietary fibers (DFs) were analyzed first. Available evidences for the use of different varieties of DFs in the lipid-lowering action both in vitro and in vivo were subsequently classified, including both soluble ones, such as glucans, pectins, and gums, and insoluble ones, including arabinooxylans and chitosans, in order to draw a primary conclusion of their dose and molecular weight relationship with lipid-lowering effect.

Dietary fiber selectively regulates intestinal persistence of probiotic bifidobacteria.

Bifidobacteria dominate the gut microbiota of breast-fed infants, and are strongly associated with human health, including immune regulation, colonization resistance, and protection against inflammation. However, bifidobacteria persist at high abundance after weaning in only a subset of individuals, and the factors that regulate intestinal persistence of bifidobacteria are poorly understood. Using gnotobiotic mouse models, we identified a common dietary fiber, raffinose, as a critical determinant of bifidobacterial persistence during microbial transitions associated with weaning. Bifidobacteri

Physicochemical properties of surimi gels fortified with dietary fiber.

Although dietary fiber provides health benefits, most Western populations have insufficient intake. Surimi seafood is not currently fortified with dietary fiber, nor have the effects of fiber fortification on physicochemical properties of surimi been thoroughly studied. In the present study, Alaska pollock surimi was fortified with 0-8 g/100 g of long-chain powdered cellulose as a source of dietary fiber. The protein/water concentrations in surimi were kept constant by adding an inert filler, silicon dioxide in inverse concentrations to the fiber fortification. Fiber-fortified surimi gels were

Dietary fiber intake in patients with myofascial face pain.

AIMS: To determine the impact of myofascial face pain (MFP) on dietary intake of selected nutrients. METHODS: Sixty-one MFP women meeting the criteria for the myofascial subtype of temporomandibular disorders completed a 4-day daily food intake diary, as well as self-report of pain severity, pain interference with eating, and depressive symptomatology. Nutrient intake for the MFP women was compared with a demographically-equivalent sample of community women participating in the federally-sponsored Continuing Survey of Food Intakes by Individuals (CFSII). Within the MFP sample, multiple linear

Gut Instincts: Why Dietary Fiber Matters in Growing Kids.

Dietary fibers are carbohydrates that are neither digested nor absorbed in the intestine. From regulation of blood glucose and cholesterol to treatment of constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, and inflammatory bowel disease, fiber has an important role in both disease prevention and treatment within the gastrointestinal system and beyond. The US Department of Agriculture's 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines for Americans identify fiber as underconsumed across age groups, with many studies showing that dietary fiber intake is low in most children consuming a Western diet. Understanding which foods

Impact of Dietary Fiber on West Nile Virus Infection.

Dietary fiber supports healthy gut bacteria and their production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), which promote anti-inflammatory cell development, in particular, regulatory T cells. It is thus beneficial in many diseases, including influenza infection. While disruption of the gut microbiota by antibiotic treatment aggravates West Nile Virus (WNV) disease, whether dietary fiber is beneficial is unknown. WNV is a widely-distributed neurotropic flavivirus that recruits inflammatory monocytes into the brain, causing life-threatening encephalitis. To investigate the impact of dietary fiber on WN

Preventive role of dietary fiber in gastric cardia cancers.

The incidence of adenocarcinoma of the esophagus and gastric cardia is increasing. Many factors are presumed to be associated: symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease, tobacco use, alcohol consumption, dietary factors, and obesity. A recent large population-based case-control study evaluated the association between dietary fiber intake and cancers of the gastric cardia and esophagus. This interesting study indicated that high intake of cereal fiber may significantly decrease the risk of gastric cardia cancer. More research is needed on this topic in the hope that dietary intake may decreas

Dietary Fiber's Physicochemical Properties and Gut Bacterial Dysbiosis Determine Fiber Metabolism in the Gut.

A fiber-rich diet is considered beneficial for gut health. An inflamed gut with a dysbiotic bacterial community can result in altered fiber metabolism depending on the fiber's physicochemical properties. This study examined the effect of fiber's physicochemical properties on fiber fermentation in the presence of healthy and colitis-associated bacteria. Sixteen fibers with different levels of solubility, complexity, and fermentation rate were used in in vitro fermentation with healthy human gut bacteria. Resistant maltodextrins (RMD), pectin (HMP), inulin (ChIn), and wheat bran (WB) were select

Dietary Fiber Intake Influences Changes in Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Status.

The objectives of this study were to characterize dietary fiber (DF) intake in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS), to assess whether DF intake affects disease activity in AS, and to investigate the effect of DF intake on disease activity in AS in the context of functional bowel disease (FBD) symptoms. We recruited 165 patients with AS and divided them into two groups according to whether they had a high DF intake > 25 g/d to investigate the characteristics of people with high DF intake. Some 72 of the 165 AS patients (43%) met the criteria for high DF intake, which was more common in pa

Raisin dietary fiber composition and in vitro bile acid binding.

Raisins are dried grapes that are popular shelf-stable snacks. Three commercially important types of raisins were studied: sun-dried (natural), artificially dried (dipped), and sulfur dioxide-treated (golden) raisins. Dietary fiber composition was analyzed by AACC method 32-25. Polysaccharides were hydrolyzed, and the resulting sugars were analyzed by colorimetric and gas chomatographic methods. Fructans were measured with a colorimetric kit assay. Total dietary fiber values agreed with published values, with pectins and neutral polysaccharides of mannose and glucose residues predominating. Temporal response patterns of human gut microbiota to dietary fiber.

The gut microbiota is a highly dynamic and complex ecosystem. However, the processes by which its members respond to dietary fibers remain incompletely understood. Here, we performed daily sampling over a 14-day observational period under the habitual diet, followed by a 14-day dietary fiber intervention in overweight participants with and without type 2 diabetes mellitus. By combining daily sampling, guild-level approach, and time-series analysis, we revealed diverse temporal response patterns among various microbiota members that are often missed by conventional sampling. These patterns were

Dietary Fiber as Prebiotics: A Mitigation Strategy for Metabolic Diseases.

Dietary fiber (DF) is one type of carbohydrate that cannot be digested by the gastrointestinal tract. It is widely recognized as an essential ingredient for health due to its remarkable prebiotic properties. Studies have shown that DF is important in the management of metabolic diseases, such as obesity and diabetes, by regulating the balance of gut microbiota and slowing down the absorption of glucose. It is worth noting that patients with metabolic diseases might suffer from intestinal dysfunction (such as constipation), which is triggered by factors such as the disease itself or medication.

Dietary Fiber Inulin Improves Murine Imiquimod-Induced Psoriasis-like Dermatitis.

Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease with interleukin (IL)-17-dominated inflammation and hyperproliferation of epidermis. Dietary fiber is fermented by the gut microbiome into short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that manifest anti-inflammatory effects. We examined if feeding with an inulin-enriched high-fiber diet (HFD) might improve topical imiquimod-induced psoriasis-like dermatitis in mice. HFD reduced thickening and total severity scores of imiquimod-induced dermatitis and reduced epidermal thickness, inflammatory infiltrates, including Ly6G+ neutrophils, and epidermal Ki67+ proliferating cells

Dietary fiber - a scoping review for Nordic Nutrition Recommendations 2023.

Continuous bump attractor networks (CANs) have been widely used in the past to explain the phenomenology of working memory (WM) tasks in which continuous-valued information has to be maintained to guide future behavior. Standard CAN models suffer from two major limitations: the stereotyped shape of the bump attractor does not reflect differences in the representational quality of WM items and the recurrent connections within the network require a biologically unrealistic level of fine tuning. We address both challenges in a two-dimensional (2D) network model formalized by two coupled neural fi
