Diffusion tensor imaging in carpal tunnel syndrome.

PURPOSE: We aimed to investigate the efficacy of diffusion tensor imaging in the diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome and to obtain a quantitative parameter that may contribute to the diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The median nerves in 57 wrists of 38 patients diagnosed as carpal tunnel syndrome and 30 wrists of 24 normal subjects were prospectively evaluated with a 3T Philips scanner, using standard 8-channel SENSE head coil. Diffusion tensor imaging was performed using spin echo-echo planar imaging. For anatomical reference, a T1-weighted sequence was acquired. Fractional anisotropy and a

Longitudinal diffusion tensor imaging in Huntington's Disease.

Serial diffusion tensor imaging scans were collected at baseline and 1 year follow-up to investigate the neurodegenerative profile of white matter (WM) in seven individuals with the Huntington's Disease (HD) gene mutation and seven control subjects matched on age and gender. In the HD subjects, but not controls, a significant reduction of fractional anisotropy (FA), a measure of WM integrity, between baseline and followup was evident throughout the brain. In addition, a DTI scalar associated with the stability of axons, axial diffusivity, showed significant longitudinal decreases from year 1 t

Diffusion tensor imaging of cocaine-treated rodents.

Studies in cocaine-dependent human subjects have shown differences in white matter on diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) compared with non-drug-using controls. It is not known whether the differences in fractional anisotropy (FA) seen on DTI in white matter regions of cocaine-dependent humans result from a pre-existing predilection for drug use or purely from cocaine abuse. To study the effect of cocaine on brain white matter, DTI was performed on 24 rats after continuous infusion of cocaine or saline for 4 weeks, followed by brain histology. Voxel-based morphometry analysis showed an 18% FA decre

Diffusion tensor imaging in early Alzheimer's disease.

Our aim was to investigate the extent of white matter tissue damage in patients with early Alzheimer disease (AD) using diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging (DTI). Although AD pathology mainly affects cortical grey matter, previous magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies showed that changes also exist in the white matter (WM). However, the nature of AD-associated WM damage is still unclear. Conventional and DTI examinations (b=1000 s/mm(2), 25 directions) were obtained from 12 patients with early AD (Mini Mental State Examination [MMSE] score=27, Grober and Buschke test score=33.2, dig

Diffusion tensor imaging in primary cervical dystonia.

BACKGROUND: It is the traditional view that primary dystonia arises from abnormal basal ganglia function but causes no apparent morphological changes. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether cervical dystonia leads to ultrastructural changes in the brain, using diffusion tensor imaging to compare brain structure in 15 patients with cervical dystonia with 10 healthy controls. DESIGN: Fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) were obtained in 17 brain regions of interest. RESULTS: Patients had higher FA values than controls in both putamina and lower FA values in the genu and in the body o

Diffusion-tensor imaging in septo-optic dysplasia.

One of the morphological correlates of septo-optic dysplasia is hypoplasia of the optic nerves. As of now, it remains unknown, in how far this disorder also affects the organization of the optic radiation. Using diffusion-tensor imaging (DTI), the non-invasive evaluation of large fiber tracts including the optic radiation has become possible. We have compared DTI-data from a patient suffering from septo-optic dysplasia with those of a group of eleven healthy control subjects. The anisotropy showed statistically significant reduction in the patient with septo-optic dysplasia within the visual f

Diffusion tensor imaging in chronic tension-type headache.

BACKGROUND: Tension-type headache (TTH) is the most common primary headache disorder and chronic tension-type headache (CTTH) is difficult to treat. Despite this clinical importance, the pathophysiology especially of CTTH remains unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to search for microstructural changes in CTTH to further evaluate the pathogenesis of CTTH. METHODS: Nine female patients suffering from CTTH and ten healthy controls matched by age and gender were included. All participants underwent a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan with a diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) sequence.

Diffusion tensor imaging of the physis: the ABC's.

The physis, or growth plate, is the primary structure responsible for longitudinal growth of the long bones. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a technique that depicts the anisotropic motion of water molecules, or diffusion. When diffusion is limited by cellular membranes, information on tissue microstructure can be acquired. Tractography, the visual display of the direction and magnitude of water diffusion, provides qualitative visualization of complex cellular architecture as well as quantitative diffusion metrics that appear to indirectly reflect physeal activity. In the growing bones, DTI

Clinical applications of skeletal muscle diffusion tensor imaging.

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) may allow the determination of new threshold values, based on water anisotropy, to differentiate between healthy muscle and various pathological processes. Additionally, it may quantify treatment monitoring or training effects. Most current studies have evaluated the potential of DTI of skeletal muscle to assess sports-related injuries or therapy, and training monitoring. Another critical area of application of this technique is the characterization and monitoring of primary and secondary myopathies. In this manuscript, we review the application of DTI in the eva

Visualization of cerebellar peduncles using diffusion tensor imaging.

The cerebellum communicates with the cerebral cortex via the superior, middle, and inferior cerebellar peduncles (CPs). To preserve the structure and function of the brainstem and cerebellum, which is compressed in various pathological conditions, it is important to delineate the spatial interrelationship of the CPs for presurgical planning and intraoperative guidance. Diffusion tensor tractography (DTT) is a technique capable of depicting the major fiber bundles in CPs. However, routine use of this technology for brainstem visualization remains challenging due to the anatomical smallness and

Brain Diffusion Tensor Imaging Findings in Hashimoto's Thyroiditis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) is a type of autoimmune thyroid disease. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) can evaluate microstructural brain involvement in various diseases. We aimed to investigate whether there were any DTI differences in patients with HT, and the relationship between DTI values and disease duration time and thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb) levels. METHODS: We prospectively included 36 patients with HT (mean age 41.6 ± 13.8 years, range 18-64 years) and 18 age and sex-matched healthy control subjects (mean age 41.6 ± 13.1 years, range 18-63 years). Diffusion tensor imaging in the cervical spinal cord.

There are discrepancy between MR findings and clinical presentations. The compressed cervical cord in patients of the spondylotic myelopathy may be normal on conventional MRI when it is at the earlier stage or even if patients had severe symptoms. Therefore, it is necessary to take a developed MR technique--diffusion tensor imaging (DTI)--to detect the intramedullary lesions. Prospective MR and DTI were performed in 53 patients with cervical compressive myelopathy and twenty healthy volunteers. DTI was performed along six non-collinear directions with single-shot spin echo echo-planar imaging

Diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging in multiple sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis (MS), a demyelinating disease, occurs principally in the white matter (WM) of the central nervous system. Conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is sensitive to some, but not all, brain changes associated with MS. Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) provides information about water diffusion in tissue and diffusion tensor MRI (DT-MRI) about fiber direction, allowing for the identification of WM abnormalities that are not apparent on conventional MRI images. These techniques can quantitatively characterize the local microstructure of tissues. MS-associated disease process

Diffusion Tensor Imaging in Parenchymal Neuro-Behçet's Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Parenchymal Neuro-Behçet's disease (p-NBD) usually presents with a characteristic lesion in the mesodiencephalic region. However, there is a lack of information regarding the axonal integrity of normal-appearing white matter in p-NBD. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is based on the properties of diffusivity and anisotropy that indicate the integrity of axons. The primary objective of the study was to compare p-NBD patients to healthy controls using diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging (DTI-MRI). METHODS: The study enrolled parenchymal p-NBD patients who maintained stable d

Muscle diffusion tensor imaging in facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Muscle diffusion tensor imaging has not yet been explored in facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD). We assessed diffusivity parameters in FSHD subjects compared with healthy controls (HCs), with regard to their ability to precede any fat replacement or edema. METHODS: Fat fraction (FF), water T2 (wT2), mean, radial, axial diffusivity (MD, RD, AD), and fractional anisotropy (FA) of thigh muscles were calculated in 10 FSHD subjects and 15 HCs. All parameters were compared between FSHD and controls, also exploring their gradient along the main axis of the muscle. Diffu

Diffusion tensor imaging in pediatric patients with dystonia.

BACKGROUND: Childhood-onset dystonia is often progressive and severely impairs a child´s life. The pathophysiology is very heterogeneous and treatment responses vary in patients with dystonia. Factors influencing treatment effects remain to be elucidated. We hypothesize that differences in brain connectivity and fiber coherence contribute to the heterogeneity in treatment response among pediatric patients with inherited and acquired dystonia. METHODS: Twenty patients with childhood-onset dystonia were retrospectively recruited including twelve patients with inherited or idiopathic, and eight
