Age-related physiological changes and their clinical significance.

Physiological changes occur with aging in all organ systems. The cardiac output decreases, blood pressure increases and arteriosclerosis develops. The lungs show impaired gas exchange, a decrease in vital capacity and slower expiratory flow rates. The creatinine clearance decreases with age although the serum creatinine level remains relatively constant due to a proportionate age-related decrease in creatinine production. Functional changes, largely related to altered motility patterns, occur in the gastrointestinal system with senescence, and atrophic gastritis and altered hepatic drug metabo

Biological activity of pentachlorophenol on the digestive gland cells of the freshwater mussel Unio tumidus.

Many chlorinated phenols and their derivatives are used extensively as insecticides, fungicides and herbicides by industrial and agricultural users throughout the world. Among these substances, pentachlorophenol (PCP) is a broad-spectrum biocide, which is still used as a wood preservative. In this paper, the digestive gland cells were used to assess the effect of PCP in the range of concentrations 3.75-75 microM (0.01-0.2 ppm) on oxidative DNA damage, fluidity changes and peroxidation activity in the plasma membrane. The toxic property of PCP on DNA strand breakage was studied using the comet

5-Hydroxytryptamine and 5-hydroxytryptamine-3 receptor antagonists.

5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) is present throughout the gastrointestinal tract, which acts as the major reservoir of this substance in the body. Its physiologic role has not been clearly established, although it seems likely that 5-HT is involved in the regulation of aspects of intestinal motility such as peristalsis and the migrating motor complex. In disease states the contribution of 5-HT is perhaps more clearly established, particularly its role in chemotherapy-induced emesis, in the carcinoid syndrome, and, possibly, in mediating the effect of some intestinal secretagogues, notably cholera t

Rate of movement of marker particles in the digestive tract of the rabbit.

Using small (50-100 micrometer) and large (800-1000 micrometer) polystyrene particles as a marker substance, transit through the gastrointestinal tract of the rabbit was studied during the formation of hard and soft faeces (caecotrophe). Both fractions of the marker were transported at an equal rate during soft faeces formation. During the formation of hard faeces a significantly higher amount of small particles was present in the caecum, whereas in the distal colon and rectum the number of large particles was elevated significantly.

Responses of the digestive tract of the omnivorous northern brown bandicoot, Isoodon macrourus (Marsupialia: Peramelidae), to plant- and insect-containing diets.

The gastrointestinal tract of omnivores such as bandicoots (Marsupialia: Peramelidae) must be able to process foods as different as invertebrates, fungi and plant material. We studied the mechanisms involved in the utilisation by captive northern brown bandicoots (Isoodon macrourus) of insect larvae and milled lucerne (Medicago sativa) hay incorporated into a basal diet of a commercial small carnivore mix. Animals on the plant-basal mix digested less dry matter, energy, lipid, fibre and total nitrogen, but consumed 79% more dry matter than those on the insect-basal mix. Consequently intake of

The role of myoneural and luminal continuity in the coordination of canine gastroduodenal patterns of motility.

Our aim was to determine the role of intrinsic myoneural and enteric luminal continuity in the coordination of gastric and duodenal motility patterns. Three groups of dogs were prepared: five dogs with an intact gastrointestinal tract served as a Control group; four dogs had transection and reanastomosis of the duodenum 0.5 cm distal to the pylorus (Pyloric Transection group); and seven dogs had identical proximal duodenal transection, but with oversewing of duodenum and pylorojejunostomy to a Roux-en-Y limb (Roux-en-Y group). In the Control and Pyloric Transection groups, the gastric and inte

Digestive anatomy, physiology, resting metabolism and methane production of captive maras (Dolichotis patagonum).

The digestive physiology of maras (Dolichotis patagonum) has not been investigated in detail. Maras have a particular limb anatomy facilitating a unique cursoriality among rodents. This may also have led to additional adaptations such as a reduced volume of the gastrointestinal tract. We performed macroanatomical measurements of, and determined mean particle size along, the digestive tract of 10 semi-free-ranging animals (7.04 ± 1.05 kg). Additionally, we measured CH4 emission in five captive animals (7.67 ± 0.98 kg) fed a diet of pelleted lucerne, and measured food intake, digestibility, and

Probiotics and their fermented food products are beneficial for health.

Probiotics are usually defined as microbial food supplements with beneficial effects on the consumers. Most probiotics fall into the group of organisms' known as lactic acid-producing bacteria and are normally consumed in the form of yogurt, fermented milks or other fermented foods. Some of the beneficial effect of lactic acid bacteria consumption include: (i) improving intestinal tract health; (ii) enhancing the immune system, synthesizing and enhancing the bioavailability of nutrients; (iii) reducing symptoms of lactose intolerance, decreasing the prevalence of allergy in susceptible individ

The role of early enteral nutrition in protecting premature infants from sepsis.

Care of critically ill, preterm infants is a major challenge. Because of their small size and complex health problems, preterm infants require long-term hospitalization in the intensive care unit where they are exposed to serious microorganisms and other antigens that can overwhelm their immature immune systems. As smaller and more fragile preterm infants are surviving NICU care, these infants are at increased risk for nosocomial infections. Although modern antimicrobial agents are invaluable in the management of infection, they can result in biologic stress to the immature physiology of the p

Digesta retention and fibre digestion in brushtail possums, ringtail possums and rabbits.

1. Mean retention times (MRTs) of fluid (marked with Co-EDTA), fine particles (mordanted with Yb) and large particles (mordanted with Cr) were measured in brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula), ringtail possums (Pseudocheirus peregrinus) and laboratory rabbits fed semipurified diets. 2. In brushtail possums there were no significant differences in MRT among the three digesta markers. 3. In ringtail possums MRTs of the fluid and fine particle markers were approximately twice that of the large particle marker, indicative of selective retention of both fluid and fine particles in the caecum.

Spatial and sex-specific dissection of the Anopheles gambiae midgut transcriptome.

BACKGROUND: The midgut of hematophagous insects, such as disease transmitting mosquitoes, carries out a variety of essential functions that mostly relate to blood feeding. The midgut of the female malaria vector mosquito Anopheles gambiae is a major site of interactions between the parasite and the vector. Distinct compartments and cell types of the midgut tissue carry out specific functions and vector borne pathogens interact and infect different parts of the midgut. RESULTS: A microarray based global gene expression approach was used to compare transcript abundance in the four major female

Intraluminal pH of the human gastrointestinal tract.

After a short introduction (chapter 1) methods of measuring gastrointestinal pH are described in chapter 2. The methods are divided into intubation techniques and tubeless methods, and the advantages and disadvantages are discussed. Measurements with pH-sensitive, radiotransmitting capsules are highlighted, and methodological problems with these capsules are described. Chapter 3 concerns the gastrointestinal pH profile of healthy subjects. The intraluminal pH is rapidly changed from highly acid in the stomach to about pH 6 in the duodenum. The pH gradually increases in the small intestine from

Exercise and the gastro-intestinal tract.

Approximately 50% of athletes will develop gastrointestinal symptoms at some stage in their careers. These range in severity from heartburn to gastro-intestinal bleeding. Fortunately symptoms are usually mild and inconvenient, but in certain individuals they can be incapacitating. It is important to exclude the more common gastro-intestinal conditions before diagnosing exercise-related syndromes. However, once such a diagnosis has been made, therapeutic options are limited. The physiological role of the gastro-intestinal tract in fluid and energy replacement is increasingly being recognised. W

The maximum attainable body size of herbivorous mammals: morphophysiological constraints on foregut, and adaptations of hindgut fermenters.

An oft-cited nutritional advantage of large body size is that larger animals have lower relative energy requirements and that, due to their increased gastrointestinal tract (GIT) capacity, they achieve longer ingesta passage rates, which allows them to use forage of lower quality. However, the fermentation of plant material cannot be optimized endlessly; there is a time when plant fibre is totally fermented, and another when energy losses due to methanogenic bacteria become punitive. Therefore, very large herbivores would need to evolve adaptations for a comparative acceleration of ingesta pas
