Population ageing, incarceration and the growing digital divide: Understanding the effects of digital literacy inequity experienced by older people leaving prison.

BACKGROUND: Digital inequity refers to the inequality and exclusion experienced by those who lack the same opportunities or circumstances to support the development of digital skills as the rest of modern society. One rapidly growing and highly vulnerable group to digital inequity is older people attempting to reintegrate into society after release from prison, where technology access is limited. Inadequate support for digital skills in this population entails widespread consequences for public health, human rights, social welfare and recidivism. This qualitative study is the first to: examine

Digital divide in information verification among young seniors: An analysis of literacies and sociodemographic factors.

In the post-truth era, characterized by rampant misinformation, seniors are particularly susceptible to its ramifications. This study endeavored to identify how sociodemographic factors and five literacy dimensions were associated with intentional information verification among young seniors and bridge the digital divide in verification. Based on the empirical data collected from 405 young seniors aged 55-74 in Hong Kong, the findings indicated that education was associated with both literacy levels and verification behaviors. Different literacy dimensions showed distinct associations with inf

Emergency Remote Education, Family Support and the Digital Divide in the Context of the COVID-19 Lockdown.

To contain the COVID-19 pandemic, governments all over the world implemented strong lockdown measures to a large part of the population, including the closing of educational centres. Teachers were urged to transform their teaching methodology, moving from a face-to-face model to an emergency remote education (ERE) model, characterised by the use of technologies to continue with lectures and maintain the physical distance with the students. The aim of the present study was to analyse the existence of socio-digital inequalities and the educational challenges posed by the development of an ERE mo

How Can We Bridge the Digital Health Divide With Equity Solutions In-Post Pandemic Era Across LMICs?

Digital health promises a revolution in healthcare delivery, yet in low and middle-income countries (LMICs), a stark digital divide threatens to exacerbate health inequities. While innovations like telemedicine and mobile health apps have surged globally post-COVID-19, millions in LMICs remain excluded due to poor internet access, unaffordable devices, and low digital literacy, especially in rural areas. This perspective piece examines the current landscape, highlighting successes like Uganda's mTrac for disease tracking alongside systemic barriers such as weak data privacy. Drawing on local e

Digital Divide in Perceived Benefits of Online Health Care and Social Welfare Services: National Cross-Sectional Survey Study.

BACKGROUND: The number of online services in health care is increasing rapidly in developed countries. Users are expected to take a more skilled and active role in taking care of their health and prevention of ill health. This induces risks that users (especially those who need the services the most) will drop out of digital services, resulting in a digital divide or exclusion. To ensure wide and equal use of online services, all users must experience them as beneficial. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine associations of (1) demographics (age, gender, and degree of urbanization), (2) self
