The convergence of gambling and digital media: implications for gambling in young people.

Adolescents' use of the Internet and other digital media for the purpose of gambling represents a serious concern in modern society. This paper overviews some of the available monetary and non-monetary forms of gambling within new digital and online media and monetary forms of games with gambling-like experiences. With reference to current psychological knowledge on the risk factors that promote adolescent gambling, it is suggested that new gambling technologies may: (a) make gambling more accessible and attractive to young people, (b) may promote factually incorrect information about gambling

The Impact of the Digital Age and Social Media on Connecting the Clubfoot Community.

Background Internet chat rooms played an important role in the late 1990s promoting the Ponseti method as the preferred initial treatment for congenital clubfoot. The social media boom has created multiple new methods for caregivers to seek support from a global community using a variety of platforms that are now easily available. This study assesses the reach of information shared across social media platforms about congenital clubfoot and analyzes topics most commonly discussed among members in these groups. Methodology Posts and pages across Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok were eva

Digital Media and Risks for Adolescent Substance Abuse and Problematic Gambling.

Digital media provide increased opportunities for both marketing and social transmission of risky products and behavior. We briefly review what is known about adolescent exposure to favorable presentations of addictive substances, such as alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana, as well as behaviors such as gambling, on social and other online media. Our understanding of these influences and whether they require greater regulation is still developing, and recommendations for future research to address these gaps in our understanding are described. Potential strategies to intervene in these environment

Revealing schoolchildren's key situations in the use of digital media inside and outside school: A media diary study.

INTRODUCTION: Digital media have become integral to schoolchildren's lives, both within educational and non-educational settings. Educators emphasize the importance of bridging the gap between school learning and children's out-of-school activities. To identify potential variations and commonalities, we investigated key situations with digital media among lower secondary schoolchildren in Germany, aiming to determine which themes are especially relevant in different settings. METHODS: We analyzed the media usage of German schoolchildren (ages 10 to 17) in class and outside of school using a m

Technology and addiction: What drugs can teach us about digital media.

Comparisons between digital media and narcotic drugs have become increasingly common in the vigorous discussion on smartphone addiction and technology addiction. Commentators have used evocative terms such as "digital heroin," "electronic cocaine," and "virtual drugs" when discussing users' growing dependence on their devices. This article looks at the spreading discourse comparing digital media with drugs from a set of interdisciplinary perspectives including media studies, political economy, critical theory, science and technology studies, and addiction studies. It engages several key questi

Digital media exposure, trust, and preventive behaviors during COVID-19 pandemic.

This study investigates how digital media exposure is associated with individuals' psychological responses and behavioral adaptation during crises. Building on the Extended Parallel Process Model (EPPM), the study provides an empirical examination of the associations among perceived severity, perceived susceptibility, perceived self-efficacy, response efficacy, trust in government, social trust, and preventive behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic. The proposed conceptual model was tested using structural equation modeling (AMOS-SEM 22) based on cross-sectional survey data collected online in

Traditional Versus Digital Media-Based Hand Therapy After Distal Radius Fracture.

PURPOSE: Distal radius fractures (DRFs) are common injuries with a rising incidence. A substantial portion of the cost of care is attributable to therapy services. Our purpose was to evaluate the effectiveness of a self-directed hand therapy program guided by digital media compared with that of traditional therapy. METHODS: We conducted a randomized controlled trial in patients aged 18 years or older who underwent open reduction and internal fixation of a DRF with volar plating. Subjects were randomized to traditional hand therapy using a 12-week protocol or an identical protocol presented in

From silenced to connected: measuring language-based identity expansion through digital media.

BACKGROUND: Social media have become a central arena for identity construction, particularly for minority communities whose languages and cultures have been historically marginalized. Drawing on self-expansion theory, this study examines how social media facilitate language-based identity expansion within the Kurdish community in Türkiye. Despite long-standing suppression of the Kurdish language and culture, digital platforms provide new spaces for linguistic reconnection, cultural expression, and the reinforcement of collective identity. While self-expansion theory has traditionally focused o

Importance of digital media in patient education for transcatheter aortic valve implantation.

BACKGROUND: Patient consent discussion is an essential part of preoperative patient preparation. It is the main basis of decision making for the patient. Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has been established as the standard treatment option for symptomatic aortic stenosis-patients. Current guidelines recommend transfemoral TAVI for patients aged 70 years or older, independently of the surgical risk and for patients below 70 years of age if they are at high surgical risk. AIM: To evaluate beneficial aspects of an explanatory video in addition to conventional medical counseling.

Digital Interactive Media for Chronic Low Back Pain Management: A Feasibility Study.

Chronic pain is common and is associated with significant costs and suffering. Therapeutic hypnosis has shown promise as an effective chronic pain treatment, but access to this intervention is extremely limited. Digital applications that offer therapeutic hypnosis, if found to be effective, could address this access problem. The primary aim of the current paper is to describe the results of two studies (Study 1 = individuals with low back pain; Study 2 = individuals with mixed chronic pain conditions) conducted to evaluate the feasibility of the digital hypnosis interactive media application f

Digital dermatoses: skin disorders engendered by social media in tweens and teens.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Photograph-based social media use among children and adolescents has skyrocketed over the past decade, raising concerns about the implications for self-confidence and behavior in this population. Social media 'challenges' encourage participants to complete potentially dangerous tasks while sharing their completion of the tasks on social media. Many of these challenges affect the skin and lead to recognizable findings on physical examination. This review discusses the history of prominent social media challenges and their effects on the skin. Attention is also given to the ef

College Students' Social Media Use and Digital Well-Being: The Chain Mediating Roles of Social Capital and Digital Trust.

BACKGROUND: As social media becomes deeply integrated into the daily lives of college students, concerns regarding its impact on psychological health and adaptive digital experiences have intensified. However, Current academic research mainly focuses on offline subjective well-being. Also, empirical research on the mechanisms between social media use and digital well-being is still insufficient. To address these gaps, the present study aims to unpack the sequential chain mediating mechanisms of two distinct forms of social capital and digital trust linking social media use intensity to digital

The public health challenges of children's and adolescents' digital media use: applying the digital determinants of health as an interpretive framework.

Children and adolescents are growing up in a hybrid world in which digital media has become part of the infrastructure of everyday life and a structural determinant of their health. In the second paper of this Series on the digital determinants of health, we apply the framework introduced in the first paper to one of the most contested questions in public health: how young people's digital media use shapes their health and wellbeing. Using the digital determinants of health framework to interpret the current evidence base, we examine what is known, and what remains poorly understood, about the
