Neuroimaging of Dilated Perivascular Spaces: From Benign and Pathologic Causes to Mimics.

Perivascular spaces (PVSs), also known as Virchow-Robin spaces, are pial-lined, fluid-filled structures found in characteristic locations throughout the brain. They can become abnormally enlarged or dilated and in rare cases can cause hydrocephalus. Dilated PVSs can pose a diagnostic dilemma for radiologists because of their varied appearance, sometimes mimicking more serious entities such as cystic neoplasms, including dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor and multinodular and vacuolating neuronal tumor, or cystic infections including toxoplasmosis and neurocysticercosis. In addition, variou

[Pathological characteristics of dilated hearts with sole myocardial wall damage in recipients].

OBJECTIVE: It is difficult to differentiate the causes of dilated cardiomyopathy only by clinical evaluation and image analysis. Pathomorphologic examinations on diseased hearts may help to improve the diagnosis accuracy. METHODS: Fifty-six extransplanted hearts from June, 2004 to June, 2006 were examined. Gross and histopathological findings were recorded, photographed and final pathological diagnosis was compared to clinical diagnosis. RESULTS: Dilations were caused by sole myocardial wall damage in 38 (67.9%) of the 56 patients, including 19 primary dilated cardiomyopathy, 9 arrhythmogeni

[Junctional syndrome responsible for prostatic urethral dilatation: a new pathological entity?].

The authors report two observations of monstrous ectasia of the prostatic urethra, in boys age 12, without any previous pathological history; discovered on at the time of major dysuria previous urinary troubles with chronic retention of 500 cl and 1.250 l respectively. In the absence of any organic obstacle, etiology relieves functional troubles. If functional explorations show a normal or hypertensive detrusor, then they discuss the possibility of vesico-sphincter dyssynergia or an obvious hypertension of the striated sphincter. From this moment onwards, purely intrinsic urethral functional t

Paediatric dilated cardiomyopathy with and without endocardial fibroelastosis - a pathological analysis of 89 explants.

Heart failure due to dilated cardiomyopathy is a major indication for paediatric cardiac transplantation. Endocardial fibroelastosis is a recognised pathological finding of unknown prognostic significance in paediatric dilated cardiomyopathy. To evaluate the nature of the association between left ventricular endocardial fibroelastosis and paediatric dilated cardiomyopathy, we reviewed surgical pathology reports of dilated cardiomyopathy explants (1986-2016) in order to characterise the pathological findings and to compare and contrast their frequency among four age groups: less than 1 year; 1-

Pathology of the arteries in the central nervous system with special reference to their dilatation: blood flow.

Arteries that belong to the central nervous system (CNS) have thick and monotonous internal elastic lamina (IEL), Willis ring, and no collateral branch to the systemic circulation. These characteristics suggest that the circulation of the CNS is constant. In order to know how flow controls the arterial configuration of the CNS, flow of the vertebral and basilar arteries was increased experimentally using eight adult male Japanese white rabbits. Flow increase was induced by the simple ligation of the bilateral common carotid arteries (ligation group, n = 4) or by the ligation of the bilateral c

Exosomes from pediatric dilated cardiomyopathy patients modulate a pathological response in cardiomyocytes.

Stimulation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) and β-adrenergic receptors plays an important role in adult heart failure (HF). Despite the demonstrated benefits of RAAS inhibition and β-adrenergic receptor blockade in adult HF patients, no substantial improvement in survival rate has been observed in children with HF. This suggests that the underlying disease mechanism is uniquely regulated in pediatric HF. Here, we show that treatment of human-induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (iPSC-CMs) and neonatal rat ventricular myocytes (NRVMs) with serum from pediatric

Correlation of Prenatal Diagnosis and Pathology Findings Following Dilation and Evacuation for Fetal Anomalies.

CONTEXT: -Despite increased use of dilation and evacuation in the setting of fetuses with developmental anomalies, the pathology examination of fragmented specimens obtained by this technique has been understudied. OBJECTIVES: -To correlate pathologic findings in second-trimester fetal dilation and evacuation specimens with prenatal diagnoses established through ultrasound and/or chromosome studies to determine the value of pathology examination for supplementing or correcting clinical diagnoses. DESIGN: -In this retrospective study, clinical and pathology findings were correlated in 448 dil

Novel gastrointestinal disease in common marmosets characterised by duodenal dilation: a clinical and pathological study.

Common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) are frequently used for biomedical research but gastrointestinal diseases have been major health problems to maintain captive marmosets. We have diagnosed a novel gastrointestinal disease in marmosets, as which we propose to call 'marmoset duodenal dilation syndrome'; this disease is characterised by proximal duodenal obstruction and dilation. This study aimed to reveal the clinical and pathological findings of this syndrome and establish appropriate diagnostic imaging methods. Animals with the syndrome comprised 21.9% of the necropsy cases at the Central

Identification of new biophysical markers for pathological ventricular remodelling in tachycardia-induced dilated cardiomyopathy.

Our aim was to identify biophysical biomarkers of ventricular remodelling in tachycardia-induced dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Our study includes healthy controls (N = 7) and DCM pigs (N = 10). Molecular analysis showed global myocardial metabolic abnormalities, some of them related to myocardial hibernation in failing hearts, supporting the translationality of our model to study cardiac remodelling in dilated cardiomyopathy. Histological analysis showed unorganized and agglomerated collagen accumulation in the dilated ventricles and a higher percentage of fibrosis in the right (RV) than in th

Comparative study of 201Tl-scintigraphic image and myocardial pathologic findings in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy.

The objective of the present study was to characterize the production of 201Tl myocardial perfusion defects, the relation between the 201Tl multiple small defects and the myocardial damage indicated by myocardial fibrosis shown histopathologically in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Rest 201Tl scintigraphy was performed in thirty-seven patients with myocardial tissue fibrosis by endomyocardial biopsy, and without stenosis of the coronary artery. 201Tl myocardial SPECT images were visually classified into 4 grades according to the severity of inhomogeneous perfusion defects (IPD), 0:

Endometrial pathology at dilatation and curettage in breast cancer patients: comparison of tamoxifen users and nonusers.

PURPOSE: We conducted this retrospective study to determine the endometrial pathologic findings at the time of dilatation and curettage in breast cancer patients on tamoxifen and compare these findings with those from a similar group of patients not receiving tamoxifen. METHODS: The pathologic findings from endometrial curettings in all breast cancer patients who underwent a dilatation and curettage between January 1986 and June 1993 at our institution were retrospectively reviewed. Medical records and office charts were reviewed to determine the patient age, history, and duration of tamoxife

Dilated Appendix: Is There More to It? Case Report and Brief Review of Literature with Radiologic-Pathological Correlation.

Mucocele of the appendix is rare and represents only the tip of the iceberg of underlying benign and malignant pathological processes. Intraoperative diagnosis is also tricky because the inflammation of the appendix often hides the tumor. The preoperative diagnosis is essential to differentiate appendiceal mucocele from acute appendicitis as the treatment varies from open surgical versus laparoscopic surgical approach and for decreasing intraoperative and postoperative morbidity and mortality rate. We present three cases of appendiceal mucocele. The purpose of this paper is to make the physici

The dilated distal esophagus: a new entity that is the pathologic basis of early gastroesophageal reflux disease.

Present management algorithms for patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) limit endoscopy to patients with advanced disease. When endoscopy is performed, biopsy is limited to patients who have a visible columnar-lined esophagus. Biopsy is not recommended for patients whose endoscopy is normal. This algorithm results in the failure to evaluate patients with early stages of GERD at a pathologic level. We report 714 patients with normal endoscopic findings irrespective of symptoms who had adequate biopsies taken from the squamocolumnar junction and the area 1-cm distal to this from m

Pathological findings of fusiform dilation of the internal carotid artery following radical dissection of a craniopharyngioma.

Fusiform dilation of the internal carotid artery (FDICA) after radical resection of a suprasellar craniopharyngioma has been reported. To the authors' knowledge, however, fatal conditions associated with FDICA have not been reported and pathological findings have not been obtained. The authors performed biopsy sampling of the wall of an FDICA for histopathological evaluation and found hyperplastic adventitia. This pathological result strongly supports conclusions from previous reports that FDICA has a low risk of rupture.

Pathological features and surgical outcome of pancreaticobiliary maljunction without dilatation of the extrahepatic bile duct.

In cases of pancreaticobiliary maljunction without dilatation of the extrahepatic bile duct (undilated PBM), preventive cholecystectomy is performed because there is a high incidence of gallbladder cancer as compared to cases of PBM with dilatation of the extrahepatic bile duct (dilated PBM). However, it is still controversial whether resection of the extrahepatic bile duct should also be performed in patients with undilated PBM. Accordingly, we analyzed pathological findings, postoperative complications and a long-term prognosis in 19 patients with undilated PBM to clarify the possibility of

Canine idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy. Part I: Aetiology, clinical characteristics, epidemiology and pathology.

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), characterized by chamber dilatation and myocardial systolic and diastolic dysfunction, is one of the most common heart diseases in dogs. The aetiology of the myocardial hypokineis is seldom known in the individual case of DCM, although several theories concerning genetic, nutritional, metabolic, inflammatory, infectious, or drug- or toxin-induced myocardial disease have been discussed. DCM is often referred to as being breed-specific for Boxers, Doberman Pinschers, English Cocker Spaniels and other breeds. Review of reports on histopathologic findings in canine DC

BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase inhibitors promote pathological changes in dilator phenotype in the human microvasculature.

OBJECTIVE: Treatment with BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) is the standard of care for patients with chronic myeloid leukemia, however evidence indicates these compounds may have cardiovascular side-effects. This study sought to determine if ex vivo exposure of human adipose arterioles to the BCR-ABL TKIs imatinib and nilotinib causes endothelial dysfunction. METHODS: Human adipose arterioles were incubated overnight in cell culture media containing vehicle (PBS), imatinib (10 µmol/L) or nilotinib (100 µmol/L). Arterioles were cannulated onto glass pipettes and flow mediated dilation
