Pediatric diphtheria and tetanus toxoids-adsorbed vaccine: immune response to the first booster following the diphtheria and tetanus toxoids vaccine primary series.

Diphtheria and tetanus toxoids (DT) vaccine should be given to children at 2, 4 and 6 months of age when there are contraindications to the administration of pertussis vaccine. We have previously reported that such children develop protective antitoxin antibody levels to diphtheria and tetanus antigens. This follow-up study evaluates the decay in antitoxin antibody levels and the booster response elicited to DT antigen when a fourth dose is given at approximately 18 months of age. Twenty-three children receiving DT vaccine were compared to 38 receiving diphtheria and tetanus toxoids-pertussis

Guillain-Barré syndrome after tetanus toxoid, reduced diphtheria toxoid and acellular pertussis vaccine: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: The association of Guillain-Barré syndrome with vaccination has been described in the literature; it is infrequent and controversial. An association with swine influenza, influenza, hepatitis and tetanus vaccination has been documented in few case reports. CASE PRESENTATION: A 40-year-old Caucasian man sustained a small right temporal epidural hematoma and nondisplaced right skull fractures after a fall from a roof. He was managed conservatively; a tetanus toxoid, reduced diphtheria toxoid and acellular pertussis vaccine was administered and a week later he was discharged home.

[Booster vaccination with a diphtheria-tetanus vaccine for dermo-jet with low diphtheria toxoid content].

Indications are provided on how the organization of polyvaccinations against tuberculosis, poliomyelitis and diphtheria-tetanus in school collectivities can be rationalized. 19 persons aged 19-20 years were vaccinated intradermally with 1.5 Lf diphtheria toxoid and 15 Lf tetanus toxoid (contained in 0.1 ml) by means of a single injection with a jet injector (Dermo-Jet). In cases which had not previously been immunized, vaccination with the toxoid doses employed did not induce detectable antitoxin titers. In all cases which had previously been immunized the antitoxin titers after the booster in

Suppression of the immune response to diphtheria toxoid in murine schistosomiasis.

Studies in humans and experimental animals indicate that infection with schistosomes results in impaired immune response to a variety of antigens. Since artificial immunization against a number of infections is frequently attempted in populations in which schistosomiasis is endemic, we have attempted to determine whether this impairment could be demonstrated in response to a commonly used immunogen. We have compared the serum antitoxin response to diphtheria toxoid (DTd) in normal, uninfected mice with that in mice bearing schistosome infections of different duration. Animals were infected wit

Meningococcal Conjugate and Tetanus Toxoid, Reduced Diphtheria Toxoid and Acellular Pertussis Vaccination Among HIV-infected Youth.

BACKGROUND: The meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MCV4) and the tetanus toxoid, reduced diphtheria toxoid and acellular pertussis vaccine (Tdap) were first recommended for adolescents in the US in 2005. The goal of our study was to determine MCV4 and Tdap vaccines coverage among perinatally and behaviorally HIV-infected adolescents in 2006 and to compare coverage estimates in our study population to similarly aged healthy youth in 2006. METHODS: Longitudinal Epidemiologic Study to Gain Insight into HIV/AIDS in Children and Youth (LEGACY) is a retrospective cohort study of HIV-infected youth in

Adverse event reports after tetanus toxoid, reduced diphtheria toxoid, and acellular pertussis vaccines in pregnant women.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to characterize reports to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) of pregnant women who received tetanus toxoid, reduced diphtheria toxoid, and acellular pertussis vaccine (Tdap). STUDY DESIGN: We searched VAERS for reports of pregnant women who received Tdap from Jan. 1, 2005, through June 30, 2010. We conducted a clinical review of reports and available medical records. RESULTS: We identified 132 reports of Tdap administered to pregnant women; 55 (42%) described no adverse event (AE). No maternal or infant deaths were reported. The most frequent pregnancy-s

Additional recommendations for use of tetanus toxoid, reduced-content diphtheria toxoid, and acellular pertussis vaccine (Tdap).

The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are amending previous recommendations and making additional recommendations for the use of tetanus toxoid, reduced-content diphtheria toxoid, and acellular pertussis vaccine (Tdap). Review of the results from clinical trials and other studies has revealed no excess reactogenicity when Tdap is given within a short interval after other tetanus- or diphtheria-containing toxoid products, and accrual of postmarketing adverse-events reports reveals an excellent safety record for Tdap. Thus, the recommendation for c

The dose of diphtheria toxoid in combined vaccines and their use in children.

The currently recommended immunization scheme consists of diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis vaccine (DTP) given at the ages of 3, 4 1/2 and 6 months, followed by a reinforcing dose of the same vaccine at 18 months, and one of diphtheria and tetanus vaccine (DT) before school entry. Children injected according to this scheme may be over-immunized. The amount of diphtheria toxoid (25 Lf per dose) contained in DTP should not be reduced, because some of the children missing the third primary dose would be left unprotected until after the 18-month injection had been given. It is likely that the 18-

Mass psychogenic illness following tetanus-diphtheria toxoid vaccination in Jordan.

In September 1998, more than 800 young people in Jordan believed they had suffered from the side-effects of tetanus-diphtheria toxoid vaccine administered at school; 122 of them were admitted to hospital. For the vast majority, their symptoms did not result from the vaccine but arose from mass psychogenic illness. The role played by the media, the children's parents, and the medical profession in the escalation of this mass reaction appeared, at first sight, to be unusual and even unique to the circumstances in Jordan at the time. A review of the literature showed, however, that this mass reac

Capillary electrophoretic analysis of meningococcal polysaccharide-diphtheria toxoid conjugate vaccines.

Protein-polysaccharide conjugate vaccines are large, complex molecules that present challenges in terms of characterization. Free solution capillary electrophoresis using alkaline (pH 9-10) borate or glycine/NaOH buffers permitted electrophoresis of diphtheria toxoid (Dt) or meningococcal polysaccharide-Dt conjugates as well-formed, relatively broad peaks. Resolution was observed between the conjugate and the Dt peaks for some serotypes; however, overlap between Dt and one or more conjugate peaks was observed with both buffers. Inclusion of SDS in the separation buffer at a level above the cri

Arthritis following combined vaccine against diphtheria, polyomyelitis, and tetanus toxoid.

We describe 2 cases of arthritis following immunization against diphtheria, poliomyelitis and tetanus toxoid. One patient developed monoarthritis of the knee after immunization, that regressed following synovectomy. Five years later, the arthritis recurred after a booster vaccine injection. One day after immunization, another patient developed arthritis of the ankle that persisted for 3 days. It is difficult to know whether there is a coincidental or a causal relation between immunization and arthritis. Although our cases suggest that immunization against diphtheria, poliomyelitis and tetanus

[Neural complications after diphtheria vaccination and inoculations with diphtheria toxoid-mixed vaccines. Observations on their etiopathogenesis].

In five children neural complications occurred following diphtheria immunization. In two cases, damage was related to the injection (vaccination-induced poliomyelitis), in three cases it could be traced back to a hyperergic reaction to diphtheria toxoid on the cerebral vessels. The latter complication is typical of individuals being immunized against diphtheria. Such complications are extremely rare; by no means can they question the value of active immunization against diphtheria.

Safety of repeated doses of tetanus toxoid, reduced diphtheria toxoid, and acellular pertussis vaccine in adults and adolescents.

In light of waning immunity to pertussis following receipt of tetanus toxoid, reduced diphtheria toxoid and acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccine, maintaining protection may require repeated Tdap vaccination. We evaluated the safety of repeated doses of tetanus-containing vaccine in 68 915 nonpregnant adolescents and adults in the Vaccine Safety Datalink population who had received an initial dose of Tdap. Compared with 7521 subjects who received a subsequent dose of tetanus toxoid, reduced diphtheria (Td) vaccine, the 61 394 subjects who received a subsequent dose of Tdap did not have significan

Physicochemical and immunochemical techniques predict the quality of diphtheria toxoid vaccines.

The most critical step in the production of diphtheria vaccines is the inactivation of the toxin by formaldehyde. Diphtheria toxoid (DTx) is produced during this inactivation process through partly unknown, chemical modifications of the toxin. Consequently, diphtheria vaccines are difficult to characterise completely and the quality of the toxoids is routinely determined with potency and safety tests. This article describes the possibility of monitoring the quality in diphtheria vaccine production with a selection of physicochemical and immunochemical tests as an alternative to established in

[The kinetics of vaccine antibodies against tetanus toxoid, diphtheria toxoid, measles virus, poliomyelitis virus and pneumococcus after allogeneic and autologous bone marrow transplantation and revaccination. 3: The kinetics of vaccine antibodies against tetanus toxoid and diphtheria toxoid after allogeneic and autologous bone marrow transplantation and combined revaccination against diphtheria and tetanus].

The 3rd part of the paper deals with the results of a combined revaccination against diphtheria and tetanus in a group of 25 children after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) with and without graft versus host disease (GvHD) and after autologous transplantation. It can be shown that in the allogeneic transplanted groups with and without GvHD it is possible to build up a tetanus and diphtheria antitoxin titre in a safe protective cause by a 2nd basic immunisation consisting of 3 single vaccinations starting about 9 to 12 months later. For autologous transplanted children only 1 to 2 v

Quantification of free polysaccharide in meningococcal polysaccharide-diphtheria toxoid conjugate vaccines.

A precipitation method using deoxycholate/HCI has been applied successfully to separate unconjugated free polysaccharide from carrier protein-bound material in meningococcal polysaccharide-diphtheria toxoid conjugate vaccines. The method effectively separated free and bound polysaccharide in conjugate vaccines prepared from Neisseria meningitidis serotypes A, C, W135 and Y. Free polysaccharide remained in the supernatant after deoxycholate treatment while protein-bound polysaccharide was fully precipitated. Testing by both colorimetric assay and high performance anion exchange chromatography w
