Morphological descriptions of Dirofilaria immitis are scarce. For this reason, we carried out morphological studies using both light and scanning electron microscopy for this filaroid species. Morphometric and morphological data were compatible with previous descriptions of D. immitis , but several anatomical structures are described by scanning electron microscopy for the first time, such as details of the cuticular striations, positioning of amphids, visualization of anal and vulvar opening, descriptions of deirids, lateral line, the pair of phasmids in the posterior end in females, and visu…

Cases of zoonotic dirofilariasis infection, caused by Dirofilaria repens, occur widely throughout European, African, Middle Eastern, and Asian countries. The reports of this infection in humans in India are limited, and we herein report the case of a 23-year-old man who presented with subconjunctival swelling in the right eye with no local symptoms. A large nematode was visualized on examination and the intact worm was surgically removed. The parasite was identified as a male D. repens.

BACKGROUND: Dirofilariasis is a vector-borne disease caused by parasitic nematodes of the genus Dirofilaria spp., considered an emerging concern in both veterinary and human medicine. Climate changes and human activities, such as pet travel, contribute to the spread of diseases to new non-endemic regions. Poland is dominated by subcutaneous dirofilariasis caused by D. repens infections. Cardiopulmonary dirofilariasis, also known as a heartworm disease is much more rare with only single autochthonous cases reported so far. Also, imported infections are observed sporadically in dogs traveling to…

Dirofilaria is a common roundworm infection of dogs, cats, raccoons, and other animals that is commonly referred to as "heartworm." The genus Dirofilaria includes D. immitis, which is a common cause of animal disease in the western hemisphere and primarily manifests as pulmonary lesions in humans, and D. repens, which is the more common causative agent of animal disease in Eurasia and primarily results in subcutaneous and ocular lesions in humans. Humans are accidental end hosts, with infection resulting from bites by mosquitoes of the Culicidae family in which ingested microfilaria have matur…

Dirofilaria repens infection, a zoonotic illness, is rarely seen in humans; it is more frequently met over the endemic areas of the Southern Europe and Sri Lanka. The authors report a case of dirofilaria conjunctivae in a 27 year old woman from Craiova; such infections are hardly to be found in our country. Our patient presented a mobile, bulbar, subconjunctival tumoral formation which was surgically removed; immature Dirofilaria repens was revealed into it. Case particularity was that the patient had not visited any of the endemic areas. Environmental changes with global warming can lead to s…

Zoonotic filariasis caused by Dirofilaria repens, a parasite of carnivores occurs mainly in countries surrounding Mediterranean region. The infection occurs in and around eye among animal handlers through vector transmission. We are reporting a case of human Dirofilariasis affecting subtenons region in a 63 year-old woman from Coimbatore, South India. The purpose of this article is to review the clinical course and management of ocular Dirofilariasis.

Heartworm disease caused by Dirofilaria immitis affects canine and feline hosts, with infections occasionally being reported in humans. Studies have shown that both dirofilarial antigens and those derived from its bacterial endosymbiont Wolbachia, interact with the host organism during canine, feline and human infections and participate in the development of the pathology and in the regulation of the host's immune response. Both innate and acquired immune responses are observed and the development of the acquired response may depend on the host and, or on its parasitological status. This revie…

Out of 150 apparently healthy male dogs from Kerala, India examined, five revealed single worm in the scrotum. They were found protruding out from beneath the tunica vaginalis when it was incised during the castration operation. Genomic DNA isolated from these worms amplified D. repens specific 246 bp PCR products (KP050552, KP050553). Thickened and enlarged epididymis along with interductal fibrosis, congestion of veins and widening of the cavernous spaces of testes and epididymis were observed in the worm infected dogs. Semeniferous tubules were intact and showed various developmental stages

A recent increase in the occurrence of Dirofilaria repens and Dirofilaria immitis has been reported from the eastern neighbouring countries of Austria (Slovakia, Hungary). In order to obtain data from Austria--especially from the areas bordering these countries--blood samples of dogs from Gänserndorf (northeastern Austria, bordering Slovakia) and Neusiedl (eastern Austria, bordering Hungary) were examined for the presence of Dirofilaria spp.-DNA by quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR). For D. repens one (out of eight) and six (out of ninety) positive dogs were found, respectively. D. immitis-DNA …

Climatic changes, together with an increase in the movement of cats and dogs across Europe, have caused an increase in the geographical range of several vector borne parasites like Dirofilaria, and in the risk of infection for animals and humans. The present paper reviews the effects of climate and other global drivers on Dirofilaria immitis and Dirofilaria repens infections in Europe and the possible implications on the transmission and control of these mosquito-borne nematodes. In the last several years, growing degree day (GDD)-based forecast models, which use wide or local scale temperatur…

Human subcutaneous dirofilariasis is a rare helminthic infection. It is caused by filarial worms of the Genus Dirofilaria, which is the natural parasites of dogs, cats, foxes, and wild mammals. Zoonotic filariasis caused by Dirofilaria species is rarely seen in the region of Dakshina Kannada. Most of them are seen in patients who are along the border of the district which shares its boundary with the state of Kerala, where dirofilariasis is constantly reported to occur. Here, we report a case of subcutaneous dirofilariasis, presenting as a subcutaneous nodule on the left cheek of a 28-year-old…

This paper follows the study from 2013 focused on the molecular screening of mosquitoes as vectors of Dirofilaria spp. which provided the information on Aedes vexans as a potential vector of Dirofilaria repens in Slovakia. Current entomological and molecular research indicates that Ae. vexans can participate also in the transmission of Dirofilaria immitis within the region. Using the standard PCR method, we examined 10,500 mosquitoes (Ae. vexans, Ae. rossicus, Anopheles maculipennis s.l., Ochlerotatus sticticus, Ochlerotatus cantans, Ochlerotatus caspius, Culex pipiens/Culex torrentium, Coquil…

BACKGROUND: The increasing population of stray dogs and cats in Ukraine poses an important risk of the transmission of vector-borne parasites, particularly Dirofilariarepens, Dirofilaria immitis and Acanthocheilonema reconditum, all of which are zoonotic and may affect human health. Despite numerous reports of human dirofilariosis in Ukraine, epidemiological data on these filarial parasites in companion animals remain limited. The aim of the study was to conduct a molecular epidemiological survey to assess the prevalence of filarial infections in stray dogs and cats across Ukraine and evaluate…

A 45-year-old female patient from Bosnia complained of recurrent swelling and redness of the upper eyelid and 24 h later the patient consulted the Salzburg eye hospital because of a subconjunctival swelling. The slit lamp investigation showed a living Dirofilaria repens which could be removed by forceps. On the basis of this case the infection pathway, possible increasing incidence and therapy are discussed.

Although there has been extensive veterinary focus on both the effectiveness of macrocyclic lactones for heartworm prevention in dogs and their adulticidal effects, little attention has been directed to their effects on heartworm microfilariae. With routine use of macrocyclic lactones, in some cases knowingly, in dogs with existing heartworm infections, veterinarians should recognize the benefits, and possible complications, arising from this behavior. Macrocyclic lactones remain our only class of heartworm prevention available, and preserving their effectiveness is critical. Drugs in this cla

Dirofilaria repens, a filarial nematode of dogs and other carnivores, can accidentally infect humans. Clinical symptoms are usually restricted to a subcutaneous nodule containing a single infertile parasite. Here, we report a case of D. repens infection with a subcutaneous gravid worm and the patient's concomitant meningoencephalitis and aphasia.
