Beyond forced translation: obesity, disability and the case for autonomous protection against weight discrimination.

Legal and public health debates on obesity move between three distinct objects: a clinical condition, a functional limitation, and a process of social exclusion. Explicit protection against discrimination based on body weight remains exceptional across jurisdictions, and legal systems in different countries have turned to disability law as the available route for people with obesity who face exclusion. This perspective argues that protection against weight-based discrimination should not depend on prior demonstration of disability. Where an explicit ground is absent, people harmed by weight di

Disability-Based Discrimination and Forgone Health Care in Children With Special Health Care Needs.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Experiences of disability-based discrimination in health care settings can harm patients by limiting access, which may lead to changes in health care use patterns. This study aimed to characterize disability-based discrimination in a nationally representative cohort of children with special health care needs (CSHCN) and evaluate its association with health care use, including forgone care. METHODS: This cross-sectional study of CSHCN used data from the 2021 and 2022 NSCH. Descriptive statistics compared key respondent demographics by exposure to disability-based dis

Speech perception and the discrimination of brief auditory cues in reading disabled children.

The processing of speech and nonspeech sounds by 23 reading disabled children and their age- and sex-matched controls was examined in a task requiring them to identify and report the order of pairs of stimuli. Reading disabled children were impaired in making judgments with very brief tones and with stop consonant syllables at short interstimulus intervals (ISI's). They had no unusual difficulty with vowel stimuli, vowel stimuli in a white noise background, or very brief visual figures. Poor performance on the tones and stop consonants appears to be due to specific difficulty in processing ver

Comparison of self-determination of students with disabilities: multivariate and discriminant function analyses.

BACKGROUND: Self-determined behaviour is composed of multiple, interrelated component elements, and yet little empirical study has researched the self-determination components other than choice making and goal setting. Also, few theoretical relationships have been drawn between the component elements of self-determined behaviour and the impact of disability category. Therefore, this study examined profiles of the combination of three self-report measures of component elements of self-determined behaviour (autonomous functioning, problem solving and internal locus of control) between two groups

Discriminative validity of the Danish version of the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory (PEDI).

The Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory (PEDI) assesses functional status in children with disabilities aged 0.5-7.5 years. The purpose of this study was to examine if the Danish version of the PEDI was able to discriminate between nondisabled children and children with cerebral palsy (CP) or juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). Convenience sampling was used to select the clinical samples that consisted of 22 children with CP and 14 children with JIA aged 1.5-7.5 years. An additional sample, consisting of 224 nondisabled children aged 1.0-5.9 years, was obtained on the basis of random

Two methods for teaching simple visual discriminations to learners with severe disabilities.

Simple discriminations are involved in many functional skills; additionally, they are components of conditional discriminations (identity and arbitrary matching-to-sample), which are involved in a wide array of other important performances. Many individuals with severe disabilities have difficulty acquiring simple discriminations with standard training procedures, such as differential reinforcement. Errorless training methods may be more effective with this population. We used multiple-probe designs to compare two potentially errorless procedures for teaching simple discriminations among three

Discrimination and avoidance due to disability in Australia: evidence from a National Cross Sectional Survey.

BACKGROUND: Across most high-income countries, populations are ageing. With this demographic change is an increase in the number of people living with disabilities. In this context, we sought to examine the prevalence of disability discrimination and disability avoidance in Australia, the demographic and health correlates of exclusion and the contexts in which disability discrimination and avoidance are experienced. METHODS: Utilising newly released measures from the 2015 ABS Survey of Disability, Ageing and Carers, we calculate the prevalence of people living with a disability who have exper

Overt acts of perceived discrimination reported by British working-age adults with and without disability.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to discrimination can have a negative impact on health. There is little robust evidence on the prevalence of exposure of people with disabilities to discrimination, the sources and nature of discrimination they face, and the personal and contextual factors associated with increased risk of exposure. METHODS: Secondary analysis of de-identified cross-sectional data from the three waves of the UK's 'Life Opportunities Survey'. RESULTS: In the UK (i) adults with disabilities were over three times more likely than their peers to be exposed to discrimination, (ii) the two mos

Navigating the Impact of Discrimination: Exploring the Experiences of Sex/Gender Minoritised Youth With Disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Youth with disabilities often experience disability-related discrimination (ableism). Those with multiple minoritised identities, such as along the axes of disability and gender, arguably encounter more complex forms of discrimination; however, little is known about their experiences. Exploring the experiences of sex/gender minoritised youth with disabilities is important because they often face many challenges within education, health and social services, including discrimination, which could perpetuate inequalities. The purpose of this study was to understand the ways in which di

The effects of listener training on discriminative control by elements of compound stimuli in children with disabilities.

The purpose of the current study was to assess whether the establishment of listener relations with compound stimuli as samples and comparisons would lead to the emergence of: (1) speaker behavior in the form of tacts of the compound stimuli; (2) listener and tact responses for untaught compounds; and (3) listener and tact responses for the isolated properties of compounds. Participants were four boys diagnosed with autism and one diagnosed with intellectual disability. We taught participants to select among three compound comparisons consisting of combinations of shapes and patterns in the pr

Ableism and Workplace Discrimination Among Youth and Young Adults with Disabilities: A Systematic Review.

PURPOSE: Young people with disabilities are persistently under-employed and experience concerning rates of discrimination and ableism in looking for work and within the workplace. Focusing on youth is salient because rates of ableism are often higher among younger ages compared to older. The objective of this systematic review was to explore the experiences and impact of workplace discrimination and ableism among youth and young adults with disabilities. METHODS: Systematic searches of seven databases from 2000 to 2021 were conducted. Four reviewers independently applied the inclusion criteri

Perceived interpersonal and institutional discrimination among persons with disability in the U.S.: Do patterns differ by age?

RATIONALE: One-third of U.S. adults have an activity-limiting health condition and this proportion increases with age. However, it is unclear whether functional limitation renders one vulnerable to institutional and interpersonal discrimination, and whether this vulnerability differs over the life course. Stigma theories suggest disability would be more discrediting to younger persons relative to older adults, as it violates cultural norms and expectations regarding able-bodied working-age adults. OBJECTIVE: We evaluate whether U.S. adults with functional impairment report higher levels of pe

Latent Neurocognitive Mechanisms Underlying Quantity Discrimination in Children with and without Mathematical Learning Disabilities.

Mathematical learning disabilities (MLD) affect up to 14% of school-age children, yet the underlying neurocognitive mechanisms remain elusive. We developed drift diffusion model with dynamic performance monitoring (DDM-DPM), an innovative cognitive model that captures both external and internal sources of structural variability in task performance. Combining DDM-DPM with functional brain imaging, we examined symbolic and nonsymbolic quantity discrimination in female and male children with MLD and typically developing children matched on age, gender, and IQ. Children with MLD showed format-depe

Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT): does the practice discriminate against persons with disabilities?

The most well-known goal of non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) is still to determine whether or not a fetus has trisomy 21. Since women often terminate the pregnancy upon a positive result, there is concern that the use of NIPT contributes to discrimination against persons with disabilities. If this concern is justified, it could have an impact on the wider social acceptability of existing testing practices and their potential further expansion. This paper demonstrates four different versions of the discrimination worry, indicates how international policy papers have reacted to them, and ide

Intersectional discrimination, gender-based violence, and social participation of women with disabilities in Burkina Faso.

This study used in-depth interviews with a diverse sample of women with disabilities in Burkina Faso to explore how discrimination based on gender and disability intersects and influences exposure to violence, as well as the impact of such discrimination on social participation, a theme barely studied in West Africa. The study thematically analysed the narratives of 35 women with disabilities - including mental, physical, auditory and visual - (age range  = 15-53), rural and urban that were collected through four focus groups and eight case stories of rape survivors. As presented in the statem

The Short Physical Performance Battery is a discriminative tool for identifying patients with COPD at risk of disability.

BACKGROUND: Limited mobility is a risk factor for developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)-related disabilities. Little is known about the validity of the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) for identifying mobility limitations in patients with COPD. OBJECTIVE: To determine the clinical validity of the SPPB summary score and its three components (standing balance, 4-meter gait speed, and five-repetition sit-to-stand) for identifying mobility limitations in patients with COPD. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 137 patients with COPD, recruited from a hospital i

Guidelines to the United Kingdom Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 1995 and the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act (SENDA) 2001 with regard to nurse education and dyslexia.

This paper concerns the impact of disability legislation on nurse education, nurse educators and student nurses, in relation to academic work and clinical placement, with regard to dyslexia. The two United Kingdom acts considered are the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA), 1995 and the Special Educational Needs and Disability Act (SENDA), 2001, which is an amendment to the DDA. The paper examines and defines the main points of the acts, such as discrimination; less favourable treatment and its justification; reasonable adjustments; making adjustments in advance; disclosure and confidentiality

Do comorbid symptoms discriminate between autism spectrum disorder, ADHD and nonverbal learning disability?

Characterizing the functioning of individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders is crucial to their diagnosis. Research has found that children with different neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorders (ASD), attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and nonverbal learning disability (NLD), may have comorbid symptoms of anxiety and depression, and problems with pragmatic language. The main aim of the present study was to identify any differences in the above-mentioned comorbid symptoms associated with these clinical profiles. A second aim was to establish how

Effects of phonological contrast on auditory word discrimination in children with and without reading disability: a magnetoencephalography (MEG) study.

Poor readers perform worse than their normal reading peers on a variety of speech perception tasks, which may be linked to their phonological processing abilities. The purpose of the study was to compare the brain activation patterns of normal and impaired readers on speech perception to better understand the phonological basis in reading disability. Whole-head magnetoencephalography (MEG) was recorded as good and poor readers, 7-13 years of age, performed an auditory word discrimination task. We used an auditory oddball paradigm in which the 'deviant' stimuli (/bat/, /kat/, /rat/) differed in

Stigma of persons with disabilities in South Africa: Uncovering pathways from discrimination to depression and low self-esteem.

Despite the fact that universal inclusion is a basic principle of the Sustainable Development Goals, the inclusion of persons with disabilities in humanitarian interventions and development policies remains elusive. Persons with disabilities face high risks of poverty, poor nutrition, limited inclusion in labor markets and poor mental health as a result. Stigma is likely to play a negative role in this regard and yet, no study has investigated the impact of stigma on depression and self-esteem of persons with disabilities. To address this gap in the literature, we conducted in June 2017 a rand
