[Economic burden of Down syndrome patients and psychological and social discrimination to female caregivers in Changsha, China].

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the social and economic burden of Downs syndrome for patients and their families residing in Changsha, China. METHODS: An 160-item self-administered questionnaire was designed and distributed to the primary caregivers of the patients in March 2020. A total of 81 eligible participants had completed the questionnaire, among which 20 were excluded for incomplete data. A patient perspective was taken to estimate the economic burden of the disease. The social impact of the disease on the patient's family was evaluated through questions adapted from the Stanford Psychological

Psychological Agency Attenuates the Link Between Discrimination and COVID-19 Burnout in Latine-Serving Community Health Workers.

Community health workers that serve low income Latine families (Latine-serving CHWs) play a crucial role in reducing health disparities, yet frequently encounter discrimination, which may elevate their risk for burnout. Burnout not only harms these CHWs' wellbeing but also deprives communities of the full benefit of CHWs' service. Identifying factors that buffer against these effects, such as psychological agency, can offer valuable insights for supporting CHWs. This study examines (1) the association between discrimination and burnout among Latine-serving CHWs and (2) the role of agency as a

Associations of General and Multiracial-Specific Discrimination with Psychological Distress and Substance Use in Multiracial College Students.

OBJECTIVES: Multiracial (alternatively, mixed-race or biracial) college students report higher rates of alcohol/substance use than their monoracial peers, yet factors associated with this disparity remain understudied. Guided by minority stress and tension-reduction frameworks, associations of general and Multiracial discrimination experiences with psychological distress and substance use were investigated. METHODS: Cross-sectional data obtained from a convenience sample of 193 Multiracial college students (Mage=20.34 [SD = 1.32], 30% Male, 31% fraternity/sorority affiliation) were used. Mult

Weight discrimination, BMI, or weight bias internalization? Testing the best predictor of psychological distress and body dissatisfaction.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed: (1) to compare psychological distress (PD) and body dissatisfaction (BD) in terms of BMI, weight bias internalization (WBI), and weight discrimination (current and past); (2) to assess the best predictor of PD and BD and assess the relationships with weight discrimination, BD, and WBI. METHODS: The sample consisted of 1283 participants across all BMI categories, recruited through the internet voluntarily. People with obesity were the most predominant (26.1%). Experiences of weight-based discrimination were reported by participants across all BMI categories, and th

Alcohol Use, Discrimination, and Psychological Partner Abuse Among LGBQ+ College Students: Results From a Daily Diary Study.

Alcohol use correlates with psychological partner abuse (PA) perpetration among lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, and other nonheterosexual (LGBQ+) young adults. However, less is known about the proximal association between alcohol use and psychological PA within this population, which would provide valuable information for intervention development. Informed by minority stress and alcohol-related PA theories, we evaluated whether (a) psychological PA perpetration odds increased as the number of drinks consumed prior to psychological PA on a given day increased, (b) psychological PA perpetration o

Testing a mediation framework for the link between perceived discrimination and psychological distress among sexual minority individuals.

Perceived discrimination is a risk factor for mental health problems among sexual minority individuals. An increasing number of research studies have investigated the mechanisms through which stigma-related stressors such as perceived discrimination are linked with adverse mental health outcomes for sexual minority populations. The integrative mediation framework proposed by Hatzenbuehler (2009) underscores the importance of identifying mediators in the association between stigma-related stressors and mental health outcomes. This study tested 3 mediators--expectations of rejection, anger rumin

Indiscriminate trauma preventions may discriminate: A randomised controlled trial of group psychological first aid.

Psychological First Aid (PFA) has been widely promoted as a universal intervention following traumatic incidents. However, early interventions once considered preventative were later found harmful, underscoring the importance of testing before widespread use. This randomised controlled trial examined the efficacy of PFA compared to natural recovery in reducing psychological distress using a validated stress-video paradigm. Based on recent evidence, it was hypothesised that PFA would alleviate short-term anxiety but show no long-term benefits. Eighty-four participants were randomised to either

Are psychological measures and actuarial data equally effective in discriminating among the prison population? Analysis by crimes.

The ability of a wide range of psychological and actuarial measures to characterize crimes in the prison population has not yet been compared in a single study. Our main objective was to determine if the discriminant capacity of psychological measures (PM) and actuarial data (AD) varies according to the crime. An Ecuadorian sample of 576 men convicted of Robbery, Murder, Rape and Drug Possession crimes was evaluated through an ad hoc questionnaire, prison files and the Spanish adaptation of the Personality Assessment Inventory. Discriminant analysis was used to establish, for each crime, the d

Healthcare discrimination, minority stress, psychological distress, and quality of life among transgender and gender diverse people in Chile.

BACKGROUND: Transgender and gender-diverse (TGD) individuals experience elevated psychological distress and poorer quality of life (QoL) due to pervasive stigma and discrimination. Minority stress theory posits that distal (e.g., discrimination) and proximal stressors (e.g., internalized stigma) predict adverse mental health outcomes, whereas protective factors such as community connectedness foster resilience. However, empirical data from contexts in the global south, such as Chile, remain scarce. AIM: This study assessed the impact of minority stress and healthcare discrimination on psychol

Discrimination Fully Mediates the Effects of Incarceration History on Depressive Symptoms and Psychological Distress Among African American Men.

AIM: Using a nationally representative sample of African American men, this study investigated the associations between lifetime history of incarceration, discrimination, and mental health (e.g., depressive symptoms and psychological distress). We hypothesized that discrimination would fully mediate the association between incarceration history and mental health outcomes among African American men. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional design, our analysis included 1271 African American men who participated in the National Survey of American Life (NSAL), 2001-2003. Incarceration history was the ma

Psychological pathways linking discrimination to alcohol and marijuana use among LGB young adults during the 2024 presidential election.

During the 2024 US presidential election, a surge in anti-lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) rhetoric contributed to a hostile political climate that intensified the psychological impact of discrimination among LGB young adults. Drawing from minority stress theory and the psychological mediation framework (PMF), exposure to LGBT discrimination may be linked to greater substance use through intrapersonal (sexual orientation rumination and hopelessness) and interpersonal (interpersonal political tension) processes. However, little is known about these indirect pathways and whether they vary as a f

Associations between psychological stress, discrimination, and oral health-related quality of life: the buffering effects of social support networks.

Stress and discrimination negatively affect quality of life, but social support may buffer their effects. This study aims: (1) to examine the associations between psychological stress, discrimination, and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL); and (2) to assess whether social support, stress and discrimination interact to modify their associations with OHRQoL. We used cross-sectional household-based data from a study including 396 individuals aged 14 years and over from families registered for government social benefits in a city in Southern Brazil. OHRQoL was measured with the Oral Imp

Bystander Acknowledgment Mitigates the Psychological and Physiological Pain of Racial Discrimination for Black Young Adults: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Racism increases pain sensitization and contributes to racialized pain inequities; however, research has not tested interventions targeting racism to reduce pain. In this study, we examined whether White bystanders can act to mitigate racism's pain-sensitizing effects. To simulate racial exclusion in the laboratory, Black young adults (age 18-30; N = 92) were randomly assigned to be included or excluded by White players in a ball-tossing game (Cyberball). For half of the excluded participants, White bystanders acknowledged and apologized for the racial exclusion. Participants completed a cold

Discriminant Validity of the 20-Item Toronto Alexithymia Scale and the Perth Alexithymia Questionnaire in Relation to Psychological Distress.

Recent investigations have questioned whether the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) distinguishes alexithymia from general psychological distress, with some researchers positioning the Perth Alexithymia Questionnaire (PAQ) as demonstrating superior discriminant validity. We evaluated both instruments in a community sample enriched with participants having psychiatric diagnoses or a treatment history (N = 681). Participants completed the TAS-20, PAQ, and Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-21 (DASS-21). Both alexithymia measures showed moderate correlations with the DASS-21, suggesting related bu

Psychological symptoms do not discriminate between reflux phenotypes along the organic-functional refractory GERD spectrum.

OBJECTIVE: Historically, psychological processes are associated with disorders at the functional end of the gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) spectrum. However, recent research suggests that psychological symptoms are relevant across the entire GERD spectrum. We aim to investigate whether psychological symptoms are associated with reflux phenotype (True GERD, Borderline GERD, reflux hypersensitivity, functional heartburn) along the GERD spectrum in a cohort of refractory reflux patients. DESIGN: Consecutive adult patients with refractory reflux symptoms underwent standard 24-hour pH-im

Do mental skills make champions? Examining the discriminant function of the psychological characteristics of developing excellence questionnaire.

The ability to successfully develop to the highest levels in sport is dependent on a range of variables, not least an individual's ability to cope with the various challenges of development. Psychological Characteristics of Developing Excellence (PCDEs) include both the trait characteristics and the state-deployed skills that have been shown to play a crucial role in the realisation of potential. Psychological characteristics of developing excellence equip aspiring elites with the mental skills, attitudes, and emotions to cope with the challenges of the development pathway, as well as underpin
