The raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) as a reservoir of zoonotic diseases in Denmark.

Raccoon dogs have successfully invaded Europe, including Denmark. Raccoon dogs are potential vectors and reservoir hosts of several zoonotic pathogens and thus have the potential for posing a threat to both human and animal health. This study includes analysis of four zoonotic parasites, 16 tick-borne pathogens and two pathogen groups from 292 raccoon dogs collected from January 2018 to December 2018. The raccoon dogs were received as a part of the Danish national wildlife surveillance program and were hunted, found dead or road killed. The raccoon dogs were screened for Alaria alata and Echin

Periodontal-disease-associated biofilm: A reservoir for pathogens of medical importance.

The ecological diversity of the periodontal microenvironment may provide suitable conditions for the colonization of species not usually considered members of the oral microbiota. In this investigation, we aimed to determine the prevalence and levels of pathogenic species of medical relevance in the microbiota of individuals with distinct periodontal clinical status. Subgingival biofilm was obtained from patients with periodontal health (H, n = 81), gingivitis (G, n = 55), generalized aggressive (AgP, n = 36) or chronic periodontitis (CP, n = 98), and analyzed for 39 microbial taxa using a che

Capacity of European animals as reservoir hosts for the Lyme disease spirochete.

The abundance of spirochete-infected Ixodes ricinus ticks naturally derived from endemic rodents was compared to identify the reservoir hosts of the agent of Lyme disease at a series of enzootic sites in Central Europe. Black-striped mice appear to be the most important rodent host for the tick and infect more ticks with Borrelia burgdorferi than do other mice and voles tested. Although rodents infect about half of the ticks that feed on them, lizards infect none. These spirochete-incompetent hosts dilute the force of transmission because many nymphal ticks feed on them. Older male hosts are m

Prostitutes are a major reservoir of sexually transmitted diseases in Nairobi, Kenya.

Prostitutes are a major reservoir of sexually transmitted diseases in many developing nations. In Nairobi we found that 16%, 28%, and 46%, respectively, of upper-, middle-, and lower-social strata prostitutes were infected with Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Genital ulcers and infections with Haemophilus ducreyi were more prevalent among prostitutes of the middle and lower social strata. A group of 97 prostitutes of the lower social strata were followed longitudinally to determine the rate of reinfection with N. gonorrhoeae. The mean time to acquisition of a new infection was 12.0 +/- 9.2 days. These

Temperate and filamentous bacteriophages as reservoirs of bacterial virulence in stony coral tissue loss disease.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine changes in utilization of reproductive health services by wealth status from 2000 to 2011 in Vietnam. METHODS: Data from the Vietnam Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys in 2000, 2006, and 2011 were used. The subjects were 550, 1023, and 1363 women, respectively, aged between 15 and 49 years who had given birth in the previous one or two years. The wealth index, a composite measure of a household's ownership of selected assets, materials used for housing construction, and types of water access and sanitation facilities, was used as a measure of wealth stat

Urinary extracellular vesicles as reservoirs of altered proteins during the pathogenesis of polycystic kidney disease.

PURPOSE: Recent findings indicate that urinary extracellular vesicles (EVs) might reflect the pathophysiological state of urinary system; and that EVs-induced ciliary signaling is a possible mechanism of intercellular communication within the tract. Here, we aimed to analyze the protein expression of urinary EVs during autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: EVs were isolated from pooled urine samples of healthy control and ADPKD patients at two different stages of the disease and under tolvaptan treatment using the double-cushion ultracentrifugation method.

Characteristics of garden dormice that contribute to their capacity as reservoirs for lyme disease spirochetes.

To describe the contribution of garden dormice to the epizootiology of Lyme disease, we compared their reservoir capacity for these pathogens to that of other sympatric hosts. Garden dormice are trapped most abundantly during early spring and again during midsummer, when their offspring forage. They are closely associated with moist forests. Garden dormice serve as hosts to nymphal ticks far more frequently than do other small mammals. Spirochetal infection is most prevalent in dormice, and many more larval ticks acquire infection in the course of feeding on these than on other rodents in the

Evaluating bromeliads as environmental reservoirs for Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis and amphibian disease dynamics in equatorial forests.

The amphibian chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) is widely distributed across tropical ecosystems, yet the microhabitats that facilitate its environmental persistence remain poorly understood. We evaluated Bd detection in bromeliad tank contents and infection in amphibian communities across an elevational gradient in Ecuadorian forests. We sampled amphibians at eight sites using skin swabs, and canopy and subcanopy bromeliads at five sites using eDNA. Overall, Bd prevalence was 23.0% in amphibians and 11.3% in bromeliads. Subcanopy bromeliads showed a significantly lower probab

Ecological Management of Crown Gall-Affected Soils: Pathogen Reservoirs, Disease-Suppressive Microbiomes, and Helper Consortia.

Crown gall remains difficult to manage because pathogenic agrobacteria can persist in soil, rhizosphere niches, infected roots, plant residues, and propagative materials, while repeated wounding creates new infection sites. This review examines how these reservoirs interact with soil and plant-associated microbiota to shape disease recurrence. Crown gall-specific studies show that gall and graft-union communities are spatially structured and identify pathogen competition, opine use, and virulence-related functions as processes that may shape disease-associated microbial assemblages. Evidence f

Aoudad (Ammotragus lervia) as disease reservoirs for bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis): experimental and epidemiological evidence.

This study evaluates the role of aoudad (Ammotragus lervia) as a maintenance host and reservoir for significant respiratory pathogens hindering bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) conservation; Mycoplasma ovipneumoniae and leukotoxigenic Pasteurellaceae. An experimental commingling trial and regional disease surveillance revealed significant interspecies transmission risks and epidemiological patterns. Experimentally, 80% of bighorn sheep exposed to aoudad inoculated with M. ovipneumoniae and leukotoxigenic Pasteurellaceae died of pneumonia under both indirect and direct contact conditions. Conver

Of rats and children: plague, malaria, and the early history of disease reservoirs (1898-1930).

This article's jumping-off point is the highly incisive but often-ignored claim by the French doctor, Louis-Jacques Tanon, in 1922 that rats acted as plague reservoirs in Paris; in other words, that they harboured the plague bacillus but were refractory to it. This claim partially reframed the fight against this disease in the French capital in the 1920s, which became more centred on surveilling the plague reservoir rather than on destroying rats. Drawing upon Tanon's hypothesis, this article explores the emergence, evolution, and several iterations of the idea of disease reservoirs in the ear

Borrelia burgdorferi in small mammal reservoirs in Kentucky, a traditionally non-endemic state for Lyme disease.

The incidence of tick-borne zoonoses such as Lyme disease has steadily increased in the southeastern United States. Southeastern states accounted for 1500 of over 28,000 confirmed cases of Lyme disease reported in the United States during 2015. Borrelia burgdorferi, the etiologic agent of Lyme disease, is maintained in small mammal reservoirs and vectored to new hosts by ixodid ticks. This study examined ecological relationships of the B. burgdorferi/vector/reservoir system in order to understand the dynamics of Lyme disease risk in Kentucky. Small mammals were captured using live traps from N

Adaptation of diverse lyme disease spirochetes in a natural rodent reservoir host.

We compared the relative reservoir competence of European wood mice for two genospecies of Lyme disease spirochetes by analyzing susceptibility, intrinsic incubation period, and degree and duration of infectivity. Borrelia afzelii, specializing in particular reservoir hosts, is better adapted to those hosts than is the more generalist genospecies B. burgdorferi sensu stricto.

Cat-scratch disease and the role of the domestic cat: vector, reservoir, and victim?

An unidentified coccobacillus has been implicated recently as the agent of Cat-Scratch Disease (CSD) in human beings. Although a history of close contact with a domestic cat is frequently elicited from CSD patients, the exact role of this animal in the epidemiology of the disease remains obscure. Current thinking holds that the cat merely serves as an efficient inoculator of a free-living organism. We believe that the cat is not only an important vector of the CSD bacillus, but it may also serve as the principal reservoir, with the organism occasionally present among the oral flora. Under some
