Infectious Diseases of the Brain and Spine: Parasitic and Other Atypical Transmissible Diseases.

Atypical infections of the brain and spine caused by parasites occur in immunocompetent and immunosuppressed hosts, related to exposure and more prevalently in endemic regions. In the United States, the most common parasitic infections that lead to central nervous system manifestations include cysticercosis, echinococcosis, and toxoplasmosis, with toxoplasmosis being the most common opportunistic infection affecting patients with advanced HIV/AIDS. Another rare but devastating transmittable disease is prion disease, which causes rapidly progressive spongiform encephalopathies. Familiarity and

Infectious disease control and the dental office: AIDS and other transmissible diseases.

In spite of attempts to modify homosexual behaviour and the sharing of contaminated needles by drug abusers, AIDS virus infections continue to spread throughout the world. The potential for transmission, the lack of a vaccine and effective treatment, and the lethal nature of the disease cause great alarm and influence health care delivery. Dentistry is involved because oral health care is being given knowingly or unknowingly to high-risk individuals. These high-risk individuals are the sources for many other infections with viral, bacterial, fungal and protozoal organisms. In spite of the fact

Infectious disease: Dog diets may drive transmission cycles in human Guinea worm disease.

Domestic dogs have an important role in the ecology of transmission of the Guinea worm, a debilitating human parasite. A new study documents how fish content in dogs' diets can predict Guinea worm infection status, suggesting additional avenues for control.

A Bayesian Framework for the Network Analysis of Transmission Dynamics in Infectious Disease.

Understanding the transmission dynamics of infectious diseases is critical for effective public health intervention. Traditional models often rely on simplifying assumptions that overlook the complexity of real-world contact patterns. In this study, we present an extended Bayesian framework that integrates genomic, temporal, and network data to reconstruct transmission networks with greater accuracy. By incorporating network structure as a prior, the model accounts for social and spatial proximity, allowing transmission probabilities to vary with contact or social distance. We further enhance

Capturing the implications of residential segregation for the dynamics of infectious disease transmission.

Occupational and residential segregation and other manifestations of social and economic inequity drive of racial and socioeconomic inequities in infection, severe disease, and death from a wide variety of infections including SARS-CoV-2, influenza, HIV, tuberculosis, and many others. Despite a deep and long-standing quantitative and qualitative literature on infectious disease inequity, mathematical models that give equally serious attention to the social and biological dynamics underlying infection inequity remain rare. In this paper, we develop a simple transmission model that accounts for

Seroepidemiological survey of transmissible infectious diseases in a portuguese prison establishment.

A cross-sectional study was conducted in 151 (71.6%) of 211 male inmates of a regional Portuguese prison in order to establish the seroprevalence for viral hepatitis (HAV, HBV, HCV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), syphilis and herpes simplex virus (HSV-1 and HSV-2) and to analyze some psychosocial and criminal characteristics. Mean age was 34 years. Anti-HAV was positive in 69.5% (n = 105) and in 34.4% (n = 52) for anti-HCV. One (0.7%) person had HBsAg and 29 (19.2%) had laboratory markers of past HBV infection. Non-immune inmates for HBV were 40.4% (n = 61). Syphilis was diagnosed in 6.0

Phylodynamic inference of the contribution of transmission routes in infectious disease outbreaks.

Understanding which types of contact drive pathogen transmission is critical for outbreak control. Traditionally, inference of transmission events with contact tracing or network analyses is used to identify high-risk contacts. Inference based on genetic data might offer higher accuracy on identifying the true events, but is rarely used to evaluate the contribution of different types of contact to transmission. We extended the Bayesian phylodynamic model phybreak to incorporate data on different types of contacts between cases. The model estimates the fractions of transmission events attributa

Bundibugyo virus disease: Transmission dynamics, infectiousness and viral persistence.

BVD is a severe filoviral haemorrhagic fever caused by the Bundibugyo virus (BDBV), for which outbreak-related evidence remains limited compared with that available for Zaire ebolavirus. This perspective summarizes current evidence on transmission dynamics, presymptomatic infectiousness, post-recovery viral persistence and the duration of infectiousness, distinguishing BDBV-specific data from evidence extrapolated from other orthoebolaviruses. Available epidemiological data from the 2007-2008 outbreak in Uganda indicate that BDBV transmission occurs primarily through direct contact with the bl

Capturing the implications of residential segregation for the dynamics of infectious disease transmission.

PURPOSE: Residential segregation is linked to racial and socioeconomic inequity in outcomes for numerous infections including SARS-CoV-2, influenza, STIs, and tuberculosis. Despite the importance of segregation as a driver of infection inequity, there are few mathematical models to inform our understanding of these dynamics. METHODS: We developed a transmission model including mechanistic relationships between residential segregation and infection inequity. We conceptualize segregation as a fundamental social cause of infection inequity that jointly impacts contact patterns and vulnerability

Dynamic Models of Infectious Disease Transmission in Prisons and the General Population.

Incarcerated populations experience elevated burdens of infectious diseases, which are exacerbated by limited access to prevention measures. Dynamic models are used to assess the spread and control of diseases within correctional facilities and repercussions on the general population. Our systematic review of dynamic models of infectious diseases within correctional settings identified 34 studies published between 1996 and 2017. Of these, 23 focused on disease dynamics and intervention in prison without accounting for subsequent spread to the community. The main diseases modeled in these studi

The case for transmissible antivirals to control population-wide infectious disease.

Infectious disease control faces significant challenges including: how to therapeutically target the highest-risk populations, circumvent behavioral barriers, and overcome pathogen persistence and resistance mechanisms. We review a recently proposed solution to overcome these challenges: antivirals that transmit by 'piggybacking' on viral replication. These proposed antivirals, termed 'therapeutic interfering particles' (TIPs), are engineered molecular parasites of viruses that are designed to steal replication resources from the wild type virus. Depriving viruses of crucial replication machin

A role for granulomatous inflammation in the transmission of infectious disease: schistosomiasis and tuberculosis.

The relationship between cell-mediated granulomatous inflammation and transmission of disease in schistosomiasis and tuberculosis has been explored. In 2 experiments involving Schistosoma mansoni-infected normal and T cell-deprived mice, and infected deprived mice that had been variously reconstituted with immune or normal lymphocytes or immune serum, there was a significant positive numerical correlation between mean liver granuloma diameters and faecal egg counts in individual animals. Lymphocytes from donors with recently patent infections were more active than cells from chronically infect

Dynamics of infectious disease transmission in heterogeneous networks considering population interaction mechanism.

In public health emergencies, infectious disease transmission often varies significantly across populations. To investigate population heterogeneity and interaction mechanisms in cross-population transmission dynamics, we develop a community-based SIR (susceptible-infectious-removed) compartmental model applicable to multiple populations. This model is grounded in a heterogeneous network that incorporates both intra-population structural differences and inter-population coupling. Considering the structural characteristics and interactions between the service-providing and the served population

Modelling infectious disease transmission dynamics in conference environments: An agent-based approach.

The looming threat of infectious diseases perpetually challenges the global public health landscape. Central to addressing this concern is the imperative to prevent and manage disease transmission during pandemics, particularly in unique settings. This study addresses the transmission dynamics of infectious diseases within conference venues by presenting a computational model that simulates transmission processes over a condensed timeframe (one day), beginning with sporadic cases. Our model captures the activities of individual attendees within the conference venue, including meetings, rest br

Machine learning and probabilistic approaches for forecasting infectious disease transmission and cases.

OBJECTIVES: Forecasting the effective reproductive number (Rt) and infection case counts is critical for guiding public health responses. We developed a machine learning and probabilistic forecasting framework to predict Rt and daily COVID-19 cases, respectively, across South Carolina counties, with the flexibility to generalize to other infectious diseases. METHODS: We first estimated Rt using the EpiNow2 R package, which incorporates Bayesian time-series modeling and accounts for reporting delay and incubation period. These initial estimates were refined using spatial covariate-adjusted smo

[Mosquitoes and Ticks: The Influence of Global Warming in the Transmission of Infectious Diseases in Germany].

During the last 135 years, the average temperature in Germany has increased by 1.4 °C. By 2050, a further rise by 1.5 °C is expected. This is associated with an increase of precipitation during the winter months. This climate change probably will improve both the growth conditions for mosquitoes and ticks, as well as their ability to transmit infectious diseases. Today, vectors that have not yet been present are invading into Germany. Among them is Aedes albopictus, which transmits Chikungunya, Zika, and Dengue Fever. Also, spreading of autochthonous malaria and West Nile Fever appear possible

A Synthetic Population for Modelling the Dynamics of Infectious Disease Transmission in American Samoa.

Agent-based modelling is a useful approach for capturing heterogeneity in disease transmission. In this study, a synthetic population was developed for American Samoa using an iterative approach based on population census, questionnaire survey and land use data. The population will be used as the basis for a new agent-based model, intended specifically to fill the knowledge gaps about lymphatic filariasis transmission and elimination, but also to be readily adaptable to model other infectious diseases. The synthetic population was characterized by the statistically realistic population and hou

Emerging Infectious Diseases and Blood Safety: Modeling the Transfusion-Transmission Risk.

While the transfusion-transmission (TT) risk associated with the major transfusion-relevant viruses such as HIV is now very low, during the last 20 years there has been a growing awareness of the threat to blood safety from emerging infectious diseases, a number of which are known to be, or are potentially, transfusion transmissible. Two published models for estimating the transfusion-transmission risk from EIDs, referred to as the Biggerstaff-Petersen model and the European Upfront Risk Assessment Tool (EUFRAT), respectively, have been applied to several EIDs in outbreak situations. We descri

Transmission of infectious diseases from internationally adopted children to their adoptive families.

Internationally adopted children may suffer from different pathologies, including infectious diseases contracted in the country of origin. We evaluated the frequency of infectious diseases that may disseminate from adoptees to adoptive families on their arrival in France. All children who attended the clinic for international adoption in Clermont-Ferrand from January 2009 through to December 2011 were eligible for inclusion in the study. Standardized medical records dedicated to international adoption were retrospectively reviewed for demographic data, clinical diagnosis, and biological and ra

[Transfusion and transmission of infectious and parasitic diseases excluding AIDS and viral hepatitis].

Many viruses, bacteria or parasites can survive in stored blood for varying lengths of time. Recipients are therefore exposed to a risk which depends on the prevalence of pathogens in blood donor populations, the clinical and laboratory controls performed in blood transfusion centres and the efficiency of the patient's immune system. Beside the HIV and hepatitis viruses, transfusions may transmit the HTL virus in endemic areas or if the blood donor comes from one of these areas (e.g. the French West Indies), the CMV virus (but only in patients with weak immune defences) and some exotic viruses
