IN VITRO EFFICACY OF DISINFECTANTS AGAINST NANNIZZIOPSIS ARTHROSPORIOIDES.

Nannizziopsis arthrosporioides, a keratinophillic fungus, has caused infection in multiple reptile species. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of commercially available disinfectants against the growth of N. arthrosporioides. Two molecularly confirmed isolates of N. arthrosporioides were used. Hyphal growth was collected from agar plates, filtered, and then diluted to high and low conidial concentrations. Each conidial suspension was exposed for 5 or 10 minutes to sterile water (control), 10% dilution of commercial bleach containing sodium hypochlorite, 409 multipurpose cleaner conta

In vitro efficacy of disinfectants against Cutibacterium acnes.

Introduction. The abnormal proliferation of Cutibacterium acnes, a human skin commensal bacterium, aggravates acne. Prompt and aggressive treatment of acne in its initial stages is essential because of the increased psychological distress experienced by patients. Over-the-counter medications containing disinfectants are sometimes used to treat acne because they are widely available, exhibit broad-spectrum activity and have a likelihood of causing resistance.Gap statement. Limited information is available regarding the bactericidal effects of disinfectants against C. acnes.Aim. In the present s

Cationic Surfactants as Disinfectants against SARS-CoV-2.

The virucidal activity of a series of cationic surfactants differing in the length and number of hydrophobic tails (at the same hydrophilic head) and the structure of the hydrophilic head (at the same length of the hydrophobic n-alkyl tail) was compared. It was shown that an increase in the length and number of hydrophobic tails, as well as the presence of a benzene ring in the surfactant molecule, enhance the virucidal activity of the surfactant against SARS-CoV-2. This may be due to the more pronounced ability of such surfactants to penetrate and destroy the phospholipid membrane of the viru

[Sensitivity of Listeria strains to drugs and disinfectants].

Comparative studies were carried out with 8 antibiotics, furazolidon, and 9 disinfection agents with regard to the sensitivity of a total of 14 strains of Listeria monocytogenes. The agents used were the most commonly employed ones in the practice in routinely applied concentrations. It was found that L. monocytogenes strains isolated from sheep had good sensitivity to the action of erythromycin, and penicillin, and were more slightly sensitive to chloramphenicol, gentamycin, tetracycline, and furazolidon. They were resistant to streptomycin and polymixin M. Good disinfection action against L.

High-level or hype? Disinfectants in Venezuela under review.

BACKGROUND: NTM soft tissue infection outbreaks in Venezuela (2006) exposed failures of locally marketed high-level disinfectants (HLDs), with only international products meeting standards. After renewed NTM outbreaks in 2024, we re-evaluated locally manufactured products claiming HLD, sterilant, or sporicidal activity. METHODS: We collected 14 locally marketed disinfectants: 11 labeled HLD and three labeled intermediate-level. Active ingredients included QACs, glutaraldehyde, organic acids, alcohols, and a strong base. Efficacy was tested using EN 14348 (mycobactericidal) and EN 17126 (spori

Ethanol-Based Disinfectants Containing Urea May Reduce Soap Sensitivity.

BACKGROUND: The use of disinfectants is crucial to preventing the spread of nosocomial infections in health care workers. As many as 25 applications of hand disinfectants is a realistic default value during a working day. However, alcohol-based hand disinfectants may weaken skin barrier function and induce dryness and eczema, which decrease their acceptance. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of ethanol-containing disinfectants with 5% urea on skin barrier function and on sensitivity to an irritant soap (sodium lauryl sulfate [SLS]). METHODS: Twenty healthy volunteers treated one of their for

[Induction of PBP2' by antibiotics and disinfectants in MRSE].

OBJECTIVE: Methicilllin-resitant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is still the most important bacterium for hospital infection control, and is known to exhibit beta-lactam resistance. Moreover, the increase in PBP2'-producing methicillin-resistant coagulase-negaive Staphylococcus (MR-CNS), especially methicillin-resistant S. epidermidis (MRSE) has been problematic. In this study, we investigated the induction of PBP2' by MPIPC, other antibiotics and disinfectants in MRSE. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The bacterial strains used were MRSE isolated in our clinical laboratory. MRSA-LA 'Seiken' was used for

Bacterial resistance to disinfectants: present knowledge and future problems.

Bacterial resistance to antibiotics is a long-established, widely-studied problem. Increasingly, attention is being directed to the responses of various types of microbes to biocides (antiseptics, disinfectants and preservatives). Different groups of bacteria vary in their susceptibility to biocides, with bacterial spores being the most resistant, followed by mycobacteria, then Gram-negative organisms, with cocci generally being the most sensitive. There are wide divergencies within this general classification. Thus, (i) spores of Bacillus subtilis are less susceptible to biocides than those o

[Sensitivity of microorganisms of infected root canals to disinfectants].

The bactericidal and growth inhibiting effects of disinfectants on Streptococcus and Candida strains were tested in vitro. Chlorhexidine, when used in tiny concentrations (0.0001-0.0039%) inhibits the growth of Streptococci. With Wofasteril 0.32%) all Streptococci and Candida were killed within a minute. Next to a good bacteria inhibitor (0.001-0.032%), a sufficient bactericidal effect on Streptococci is shown by hydrogen peroxide when used in a 4% concentration and warmed to 45 degrees Centigrade (degrees C).

Chlorinated bis-phenolic disinfectants inhibit human and rat aromatase.

Chlorinated bis-phenolic disinfectants (CBPDs) are widely used compounds. However, whether they disrupt the endocrine system by inhibiting human and rat aromatase (CYP19A1) remains unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of CBPDs on human and rat CYP19A1 activity in placental microsomes. CBPDs showed structure-dependent inhibition of CYP19A1, with the human enzyme exhibiting 1.3-1.8-fold higher sensitivity than the rat ortholog. Since lower IC50 values correspond to stronger inhibitory potency, the compounds were ranked as follows: hexachlorophene (5.47 μM) > bithio

[Multi-resistant pathogens - are they also resistant to disinfectants?].

Epidemiological studies show that the care of patients in rooms with a previous stay by a person with evidence of multi-resistant pathogens (MRP) is associated with an increased risk of these pathogens occurring. The question therefore regularly arises as to whether MRP also exhibit resistance to the disinfectants used. To date, there are no standardised definitions for "resistance" to disinfectants. However, disinfectants authorised on the market are also effective against multi-resistant pathogens and the failure of efficient disinfection is mainly caused by application errors (insufficient

Disinfectants Used in Stomatology and SARS-CoV-2 Infection.

Effective disinfection is a basic procedure in medical facilities, including those conducting dental surgeries, where treatments for tissue discontinuity are also performed, as it is an important element of infection prevention. Disinfectants used in dentistry and dental and maxillofacial surgery include both inorganic (hydrogen peroxide, sodium chlorite-hypochlorite) and organic compounds (ethanol, isopropanol, peracetic acid, chlorhexidine, eugenol). Various mechanisms of action of disinfectants have been reported, which include destruction of the structure of bacterial and fungal cell membr
