Congenital esophageal stenosis (CES) is a rare congenital disorder which may be isolated or associated with esophageal atresia (EA). It courses with esophageal outflow tract obstruction. Esophageal epiphrenic diverticulae are esophageal outpouchings above diaphragm which develop because of an underlying esophageal motor disorder. We present an infant who had CES associated with EA detected during the course of routine follow-up. She underwent several sessions of esophageal balloon dilatations for CES with some symptomatic improvement. However, an epiphrenic diverticulum (ED) developed during t

An 18-month-old infant with Down's syndrome presented with a symptomatic esophageal diverticulum (ED) located at the cervical esophagus. He had been operated on successfully for an esophageal atresia and distal tracheoesophageal fistula in the newborn period. Neither surgical maneuvers nor esophageal trauma could explain the ED, which was resected through a cervical approach.

A well-nourished 33-year-old male, who was entirely asymptomatic and in apparently good health, was referred to our hospital because of abnormal findings on a routine chest X-ray film. A chest X-ray taken upon admission revealed an oval mass suggesting a mediastinal tumor in the posterior mediastinum. An esophagogram demonstrated severe distortion of the esophageal lumen and an epiphrenic diverticulum on the right side. Endoscopy disclosed a submucosal bulge covered by normal mucosa. The mass, which was located on the right diaphragm between the heart and right ribs, appeared to be of homogeno

Objective Esophageal diverticulum is rare, and the concomitance of esophageal motility disorders (EMDs) and the efficacy of novel endoscopic treatment have not been investigated in Japan. Methods An examination including high-resolution manometry (HRM) was performed for patients with both EMDs and epiphrenic diverticulum. EMD-related epiphrenic diverticulum and Zenker's diverticulum were treated using salvage peroral endoscopic myotomy (s-POEM) and endoscopic diverticulotomy, respectively. Results Six cases of epiphrenic diverticulum were diagnosed in this study. Among 125 patients with achala

A new laparoscopic surgical approach to treat an esophageal epiphrenic diverticulum is described. This is a rare disease. Today only 4 cases of laparoscopic transhiatal treatment with good results are reported in the literature. The present case report is an 80 years-old male with medium size epiphrenic diverticulum (10 cm) and very symptomatic dysphagia. Preoperative investigations include barium swallow, upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and esophageal manometry. The laparoscopic transhiatal treatment was carried out without difficulty. Diverticulectomy esophageal myotomy and partial gastric

In connection with an esophageal diverticulum the case of an infrequent acquired esophago-bronchial fistula appearing in symptom-poor form is described. The fistula persisted over a long period however owing to the poor symptoms and absence of pulmonary complications operation was left out of consideration. In the course of the regular control the complaints of the patient ceased and the endoscopy showed shrinking of the fistula. No similar observation was found in the Hungarian literature.

Out of our last 70 cases of esophageal atresia, a circular myotomy of the upper pouch (Livaditis technique) was required in six patients to achieve an end-to-end anastomosis: all had a lower tracheoesophageal fistula. They were operated on between 15 and 96 hours after birth, without any preoperative attempt of elongation of the upper pouch. Follow-up ranged from 14 to 77 months. Three patients had an uneventful postoperative course and late outcome, despite a moderate ballooning at the myotomy site in one. Three babies developed a mild stricture which responded easily to a few dilatations. As

Objective: To investigate the clinical characteristics and causes of misdiagnosis of esophageal bronchial fistula secondary to esophageal diverticulum. Methods: A case of esophageal bronchial fistula secondary to esophageal diverticulum was described with regard to its diagnosis and treatment process. A systematic literature review was performed for similar published cases in Wanfang, CNKI and Pubmed databases, using the key words "esophageal diverticulum, esophageal bronchial fistula" from January 1946 to August 2017. Results: The patient was a 52 year-old man with a history of persistent cou

Tracheal diverticulum, a benign entity characterized by single or multiple invaginations of the tracheal wall, is commonly asymptomatic and detected incidentally. We report the case of a 76-year-old man with a tracheal diverticulum who underwent thoracoscopic esophagectomy with a three-field lymphadenectomy for middle thoracic esophageal cancer. The tracheal diverticulum was located at the right posterolateral region of the trachea, which overlapped the region of dissection of the right recurrent laryngeal nerve lymph nodes. Paratracheal lymph node dissection is an important surgical procedure

A 42-year-old male student from abroad visited a department of internal medicine of a hospital because of fever and dyspnea. A diagnosis of purulental mediastinitis with empyema was made. After drainage of the right thoracic cavity, the patient was referred to our department. Although consecutive treatment consisting of administration of antibiotics and thoracic drainage was conducted, dyspnea became worse, and widening of the mediastinum become severer. Mediastinal drainage was done via the parasternal approach under general anesthesia. Thereafter, the patient temporarily suffered from respir

Background: Recurrence of dysphagia following myotomy for achalasia poses clinical and diagnostic challenges. Postmyotomy esophageal diverticula is a rare disorder, usually developing due to inadequate myotomy, resulting in dysphagia. We herein present a new entity of esophageal diverticula developing after successful complete myotomy, which causes dysphagia and mimics recurrence of achalasia. Methods: A review of the prospectively maintained database of all patients with achalasia and diverticula between January 2012 and June 2024 was performed. Demographic, clinical data, diagnosis, treatmen

A Zenker's or pharyngoesophageal diverticulum may represent a rare cause of upper digestive obstruction, or more often, cervical dysphagia, regurgitations and cough. It develops most often on the posterior left side of cervical oesophagus in elderly patients, and depending on the severity of clinical symptoms may warrant surgical or endoscopic treatment. For large lesions with a difficult endoscopic access to the diverticular neck, surgery is recommended. In our case, we illustrate a giant right-sided Zenker's diverticulum responsible for complete aphagia in a 78-year-old male patient. Open su

A 71-year-old man was admitted to Teikyo University Hospital with paraplegia, subileus, back pain and high fever. He gave a history of having received treatment for spinal caries 20 years previously. Chest computed tomography and esophageal endoscopy demonstrated evidence of spinal caries and traction mid-esophageal diverticulum associated with kyphosis of the spine. The present report describes the extremely rare case of diverticula associated with kyphosis of the spine caused by spinal caries (Pott's spinal caries).

Zenker's Diverticulum (ZD) is a false diverticulum located in the posterior esophagus between the cricopharyngeus and inferior constrictor. Few cases have been reported in the pediatric population. Congenital esophageal diverticulum is commonly associated with additional esophageal anatomical deformities or iatrogenic injury in the early post-natal period. TD was born at 39 5/7 weeks gestational age and did well at home with the exception of "choking during feeds 2-4 times per day" with mild cyanosis. Flexible bronchoscopy performed under sedation revealed a retropharyngeal mass protruding tow

Esophageal diverticula are rare pouches that form in the esophageal lining. They occur infrequently in the general population and are more often seen in individuals with dysphagia. Among the types, mid-esophageal (parabronchial) diverticula are especially uncommon. These diverticula are usually asymptomatic and are often found incidentally during diagnostic procedures. Unlike distal esophageal diverticula, which may be linked to acid reflux, mid-esophageal types are thought to result from long-standing inflammation or mechanical forces acting on the esophagus. Although cancer arising in esopha

Symptoms of high dysphagia are sometimes too readily interpreted as symptoms of globus. When patients have unmistakable difficulties during meals, focused diagnostic procedures are indicated. The upper esophageal sphincter (UES) is the key structure at the transition from hypopharynx to esophagus. In many disorders presenting with dysphagia, the UES mechanism remains intact and can cause the symptoms. Especially in patients with a hypopharyngeal (Zenker's) diverticulum and in patients with a hypopharyngeal paralysis due to a neurologic disorder, sphincterotomy may be indicated. In the microend
