Self-domestication in Homo sapiens: Insights from comparative genomics.

This study identifies and analyzes statistically significant overlaps between selective sweep screens in anatomically modern humans and several domesticated species. The results obtained suggest that (paleo-)genomic data can be exploited to complement the fossil record and support the idea of self-domestication in Homo sapiens, a process that likely intensified as our species populated its niche. Our analysis lends support to attempts to capture the "domestication syndrome" in terms of alterations to certain signaling pathways and cell lineages, such as the neural crest.

The origin and domestication of modern cultivated Chrysanthemum × morifolium.

The modern cultivated chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum × morifolium Ramat.) is a globally important ornamental plant, ranking as the second-largest cut flower after roses. Here, to unravel its complex origin and domestication history, we achieved 6 haplotypes of the elite hexaploidy cut chrysanthemum cultivar 'Jinba' (2n = 6x = 54). By constructing a genome-wide variant map across 147 core accessions, we classified current Chrysanthemum varieties into 4 wild and 4 cultivated groups. We observed extensive, intricate gene flow among these groups, demonstrating that wild germplasms from both China an

East-west divergence and metabolic differentiation in celery domestication.

Celery (Apium graveolens) is a globally cultivated vegetable renowned for its health-promoting and nutraceutical benefits. Exploring its genomic and metabolic diversity can help to facilitate breeding selection. Here, by integrating genomic and metabolomic analyses of 305 globally representative accessions, we reveal pronounced east-west population structure that parallels geographical distribution and varietal differentiation, with three major variety groups showing distinct domestication trajectories. We identify key loci associated with domestication-related traits, including petiole morpho

The domestication of the larynx: The neural crest connection.

Wolves howl and dogs bark, both are able to produce variants of either vocalization, but we see a distinct difference in usage between wild and domesticate. Other domesticates also show distinct changes to their vocal output: domestic cats retain meows, a distinctly subadult trait in wildcats. Such differences in acoustic output are well-known, but the causal mechanisms remain little-studied. Potential links between domestication and vocal output are intriguing for multiple reasons, and offer a unique opportunity to explore a prominent hypothesis in domestication research: the neural crest/dom

Schizophrenia and Human Self-Domestication: An Evolutionary Linguistics Approach.

Schizophrenia (SZ) is a pervasive neurodevelopmental disorder that entails social and cognitive deficits, including marked language problems. Its complex multifactorial etiopathogenesis, including genetic and environmental factors, is still widely uncertain. SZ incidence has always been high and quite stable in human populations, across time and regardless of cultural implications, for unclear reasons. It has been hypothesized that SZ pathophysiology may involve the biological components that changed during the recent human evolutionary history, and led to our distinctive mode of cognition, wh

Coat color variation at the beginning of horse domestication.

The transformation of wild animals into domestic ones available for human nutrition was a key prerequisite for modern human societies. However, no other domestic species has had such a substantial impact on the warfare, transportation, and communication capabilities of human societies as the horse. Here, we show that the analysis of ancient DNA targeting nuclear genes responsible for coat coloration allows us to shed light on the timing and place of horse domestication. We conclude that it is unlikely that horse domestication substantially predates the occurrence of coat color variation, which

Eukaryotic domestication of a bacterial immune protein following horizontal transfer.

Many components of eukaryotic innate immunity originated from bacterial immune systems. However, it is unclear how eukaryotes acquire these genes and how the components are domesticated into eukaryotic physiology. Here, we discovered a recent instance of bacteria-eukaryote horizontal transfer and used it to characterize the genetic and biochemical changes that accompanied eukaryotic acquisition. We focus on Toll/interleukin-1 receptor (TIR) domains, which are widespread yet potentially costly immune modules associated with inflammation and/or cell death. By generating an atlas of TIR diversity

Repeated domestication shaped the evolution of grain amaranth in Mesoamerica.

Grain amaranths are nutritious pseudocereals that have been domesticated in the Andes and Mesoamerica. The three grain amaranth species were probably domesticated independently from Amaranthus hybridus in different geographical regions. Although the domestication process across the three grain amaranths has been partially elucidated, the history within each domesticated species remains vastly unknown. Therefore, we study the origin and domestication history of A. cruentus within Mesoamerica. We reveal a high genetic diversity and distinct histories of subgroups, using whole genome sequencing o

Scleral appearance is not a correlate of domestication in mammals.

Numerous hypotheses try to explain the unusual appearance of the human eye with its bright sclera and transparent conjunctiva and how it could have evolved from a dark-eyed phenotype, as is present in many non-human primates. Recently, it has been argued that pigmentation defects induced by self-domestication may have led to bright-eyed ocular phenotypes in humans and some other primate lineages, such as marmosets. However, it has never been systematically studied whether actual domesticated mammals consistently deviate from wild mammals in regard to their conjunctival pigmentation and if this

The History of Farm Foxes Undermines the Animal Domestication Syndrome.

The Russian Farm-Fox Experiment is the best known experimental study in animal domestication. By subjecting a population of foxes to selection for tameness alone, Dimitry Belyaev generated foxes that possessed a suite of characteristics that mimicked those found across domesticated species. This 'domestication syndrome' has been a central focus of research into the biological pathways modified during domestication. Here, we chart the origins of Belyaev's foxes in eastern Canada and critically assess the appearance of domestication syndrome traits across animal domesticates. Our results suggest

Adaptive variation in butyrylcholinesterase-influenced lipid metabolism during horse domestication.

Lipid metabolism influences horse athletic performance, yet its genetic basis remains unclear. Here, we investigate the genetic basis of lipid metabolic traits by quantifying key metabolic parameters and sequencing the genomes of 298 horses. We identify a missense mutation (ECA19:9,198,989, G>C) in the BCHE gene that is strongly associated with lipid metabolism, especially butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) activity. The "C" allele is associated with increased BChE activity and reduced intracellular triglyceride levels, hepatic adiposity, and overall fat mass, highlighting a central role for BCHE in

Domestication and feedback: bidirectional hijacking in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma microenvironment.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is characterized by a tumor microenvironment (TME) composed of a dense extracellular matrix, cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), vasculature, neural elements, and immune cell populations. This complex network promotes tumor proliferation, invasion, metastasis, and resistance to immunotherapy and chemotherapy. The microenvironmental characteristics of the various PDAC subtypes are discussed in this review. And we examines the role of cancer cells in the TME, highlighting their ability to manipulate stromal components to serve as collaborators in tumor p

[Domestication progress of endangered Chinese medicinal material Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus].

Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus is the dried bulb of perennial herbaceous plants in the Fritillaria genus(Liliaceae family) and is a representative traditional Chinese medicinal material with distinctive regional characteristics. Clinically, it is widely used in the treatment of dry cough, bronchial asthma, and other respiratory diseases, possessing significant medicinal and economic value and being highly esteemed in TCM. Currently, Fritillariae Cirrhosae Bulbus primarily relies on wild harvesting. However, due to excessive collection, its wild resources have drastically declined, and all sourc

Modularity patterns in mammalian domestication: Assessing developmental hypotheses for diversification.

The neural crest hypothesis posits that selection for tameness resulted in mild alterations to neural crest cells during embryonic development, which directly or indirectly caused the appearance of traits associated with the "domestication syndrome" (DS). Although representing an appealing unitary explanation for the generation of domestic phenotypes, support for this hypothesis from morphological data and for the validity of the DS remains a topic of debate. This study used the frameworks of morphological integration and modularity to assess patterns that concern the embryonic origin of the s

History of domestication and spread of Aedes aegypti--a review.

The adaptation of insect vectors of human diseases to breed in human habitats (domestication) is one of the most important phenomena in medical entomology. Considerable data are available on the vector mosquito Aedes aegypti in this regard and here we integrate the available information including genetics, behaviour, morphology, ecology and biogeography of the mosquito, with human history. We emphasise the tremendous amount of variation possessed by Ae. aegypti for virtually all traits considered. Typological thinking needs to be abandoned to reach a realistic and comprehensive understanding o

Domestication and plasticity of brain organization in mallards (Anas platyrhynchos).

The sizes and histological differentiation of structures in the central nervous system of wild and domestic ducks were compared using allometric methods. Whole brain volume is 14.3% less in domestic ducks than in wild birds, and the size of certain brain structures is more variable in domestic ducks than in the wild birds. These findings are consistent with results of studies in other domestic birds and in domestic mammals. Although the brain subdivision volumes are not reduced to the same extent, the relative composition of the brain is maintained in domestic ducks. The overall reduction in r

The domestication of the wolf larynx-testing the neural crest connection.

The neural crest domestication syndrome (NCDS) hypothesis suggests that selection pressures for tameness during animal domestication resulted in a down-regulation of neural crest cell migration and proliferation, providing a mechanistic explanation for traits commonly observed across domesticates. We test the viability of this hypothesis via a derived prediction. According to the NCDS hypothesis, neural crest-derived structures should be reduced throughout the entire organism in domesticated variants compared to their wild ancestors. Here, we test this prediction by comparing the larynges of w

3D chromatin remodeling during domestication defines novel targets for crop improvement.

Three-dimensional (3D) genome folding shapes gene regulation, yet the genetic underpinnings linking 3D genome evolution to phenotypic innovation during domestication remain elusive. Using population-scale Hi-C profiling of 34 semi-wild and 267 cultivated allotetraploid cottons, we generated a pan-3D genome atlas capturing extensive diversity in topologically associating domains (TADs) and chromatin loops. Chromatin interactome-wide association studies identified 105 TAD reconfigurations and 58 loop rewirings that were established as the 3D chromatin basis of fiber quality, boosting heritabilit
