Donor conception practices in Australia have left thousands of donor-conceived people, their families and gamete donors bereft of information. The lack of a nationally timeline-consistent approach to information access has driven these people to seek support and information from self-help groups, online communities and even their own DNA. This article examines the historical perspective of information access and how progress is being made through lobbying and public awareness. To determine the current status of information availability, fertility clinics around Australia were surveyed. It is a

BACKGROUND: Observational studies showed that women with a donor oocyte (DO) pregnancy have an increased risk of pregnancy complications.
OBJECTIVES: Systematic review and meta-analysis to compare pregnancy complications of DO pregnancy with autologous oocyte in vitro fertilisation (IVF), and whether DO pregnancy acts as an independent risk factor.
SEARCH STRATEGY: Online searches of databases from 1 January 1980 to 31 January 2015 were performed using a set of relevant keywords.
SELECTION CRITERIA: All studies comparing pregnancy complications of women with donor oocyte IVF and autologous

Little is known about the parents of donor-conceived offspring in France, where the anonymity of the donor prevails. The present study associates quantitative data informing the attitudes and decisions of parents towards disclosure and qualitative data related to their experience of being parents of a donor-conceived offspring. The quantitative results about the becoming of the conception narratives (n=929 requesting people, including 216 parents) confirmed that most parents decided to tell their child about the donor conception. The analysis of the semi-structured interviews of 37 parents def

Donor conception challenges conventional kinship idioms: the involvement of a gamete donor culturally raises questions about parentage and also the meaning of genetic heritage. Although there is now a growing body of literature exploring how people resorting to donor conception negotiate kinship and connectedness, this predominantly focuses on heterosexual couples. Little is yet known about how lesbian couples navigate these processes. This paper builds on a qualitative interview study comprising 25 lesbian couples in England and Wales with experiences of pursuing donor conception in the conte

BACKGROUND: Prompted by legislation in Victoria, Australia, permitting gamete donors to seek identifying details of people conceived from their gametes, this research investigated the views of adolescents from the general population on how parents can best talk to their donor-conceived adolescent children about their conception.
METHODS: Qualitative interviews (six group discussions, n = two to six per group, and one individual interview) lasting c. 50 min with 25 secondary school students.
RESULTS: Naïve adolescents had views largely consistent with those of donor-conceived adults, for exam

The aim of this article is to analyse the motivations, expectations, and experiences of information exchange and contact among parties linked through donor conception of solo mothers who had their children with the help of assisted reproduction technology (ART) across donor types (e.g. sperm, egg, embryo) and settings in Spain, where donation is anonymous, and the United Kingdom, where donor anonymity was lifted in 2005. This study draws on ethnographic research that took place in Madrid (Spain) and in London (the United Kingdom), where I conducted 60 in-depth interviews with solo mothers.

RESEARCH QUESTION: How do Dutch heterosexual parents who achieved parenthood through donor conception navigate non-genetic parenthood and kinship?
DESIGN: A qualitative in-depth semi-structured interview study was performed between September 2018 and January 2019 with both partners of 13 Dutch heterosexual couples where the male partner suffered from infertility and who conceived a child with the help of a sperm donor. Interview questions were based on literature and clinical experiences of experts in the field of donor conception. Interviews were transcribed and analysed using thematic analy

Assisted conception involving donor insemination challenges cultural idioms of parenthood and family; there is now a growing body of work exploring how women and couples negotiate becoming a family in this way. But sperm donation also raises questions on the more intimate levels of sex, sexuality and sexual bodies, and these have received little sustained attention in the literature. Lesbian couples in the U.K. increasingly negotiate access to medicalised donor insemination, but many also conceive in informal arrangements with donors where they themselves negotiate proximity and contact with d

Donated sperm, eggs, and embryos are an increasing feature of assisted reproduction; people conceived in this way have different genetic and social histories. Although most offspring of donor-assisted conception are ignorant of their genetic history, recipient parents must negotiate increasing demand for full disclosure to offspring. This paper illustrates some of the reasons parents give for not telling their children, underlines the experience of many parents of being uncertain of how to go about telling, presents information from some parents who have endeavoured to be open with their child

BACKGROUND: Some persons conceived with donor gametes react negatively when they found their birth via donor conception. They request access to information about and seek to communicate with the donor. However, some countries mandate donor anonymity. Other countries allow donor-conceived persons to access donor information, but they can only use this access if their parents have disclosed donor conception to them. We investigated a thorny issue of donor conception: whether donor conception should be shifted from an anonymous basis to a non-anonymous basis.
METHODS: We review the issues and co

This article explores the processes through which Australian recipients select unknown donors for use in assisted reproductive technologies and speculates on how those processes may affect the future life of the donor-conceived person. I will suggest that trust is an integral part of the exchange between donors, recipients, and gamete agencies in donor conception and heavily informs concepts of relatedness, race, ethnicity, kinship, class, and visibility. The decision to be transparent (or not) about a child's genetic parentage affects recipient parents' choices of donor, about who is allowed

OBJECTIVE: To study the perinatal outcomes of children born from different conception methods: in vitro fertilization (IVF) with autologous oocytes or IVF with donor egg vs. those conceived without medical assistance by using a sibling analysis.
DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study conducted using electronic medical record data from 2000 through 2018, of a national healthcare organization.
SUBJECTS: The cohort included mothers who had 2 pregnancies and their children. Cohort A compared women with 2 medically unassisted conceptions with those with an unassisted first conception followed by an I

This article responds to a debate article published in Human Reproduction earlier this year. In that article, the authors suggested that parents should be encouraged to disclose the use of donor gametes to their children given rapid and widespread advances in genetic testing and sequencing. However, there is an urgent need to engage with the assertion that in this context, telling children about their donor conception both safeguards and promotes their interests, particularly if such disclosure is motivated by parents' anxieties about accidental discovery. Disclosure that is motivated by the n

STUDY QUESTION: What is the relationship between parent psychological adjustment, type of gamete donation (donor insemination, egg donation) and parents' disclosure of their use of donated gametes to their children.
SUMMARY ANSWER: Disclosure of donor origins to the child was not always associated with optimal levels of psychological adjustment, especially for fathers in donor insemination families.
WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Cross-sectional analyses have found mothers and fathers who conceived a child using donated sperm or eggs to be psychologically well-adjusted, with few differences emerging

BACKGROUND In recent years, changes in attitudes towards (non-)disclosure of donor conception to offspring and/or others have been observed. Studies have started to identify possible factors that contribute to these changes that are relevant for clinics, counsellors and policy-makers in their approach to the disclosure process. The aim of this systematic review was to integrate the existing knowledge on factors that influence the disclosure decision-making process of donor conception to offspring and/or others in heterosexual couples, and to discuss future trends and concerns. METHODS A biblio

BACKGROUND: Tensions and anxieties surround secrecy within families in the context of gamete donation and family building. This paper presents the views of parents who had kept their use of donor insemination a secret from their offspring. A sub-set of these parents said that they wished to tell their now-adult offspring, and discussed the questions and issues this secrecy raised to them.
METHODS: In-depth interviews were undertaken with heterosexual parents (of 44 families) who had given birth to children conceived via donor insemination between 1983 and 1987. These interviews comprised a fo

RESEARCH QUESTION: How can the experiences and attitudes of donor-conceived people regarding the disclosure of their conception be understood, given the emphasis on openness and the ongoing challenges faced by donor-conceived families?
DESIGN: A mixed-method exploratory study (March 2019 to September 2020) involving an online survey and in-depth interviews with French sperm donor-conceived adults born to heterosexual couples. The survey included 107 respondents aged 20-54 years, mostly women (86.9%) with high academic standards, informed of their conception at an average age of 18.6 (± 11.9).

Since its inception, donor conception practices have been a reproductive choice for the infertile. Past and current practices have the potential to cause significant and lifelong harm to the offspring through loss of kinship, heritage, identity, and family health history, and possibly through introducing physical problems. Legislation and regulation in Australia that specifies that the welfare of the child born as a consequence of donor conception is paramount may therefore be in conflict with the outcomes. Altering the paradigm to a child-centric model, however, impinges on reproductive choic

Donor assisted conception provides new opportunities for achieving parenthood but at the same time raises issues of secrecy, anonymity, and the management of the offspring's genetic origins. As with adoption, the child's right to a genetic identity is at stake. The first part of this paper examines bio-psychosocial evidence indicating that maintaining secrecy and anonymity regarding genetic parents may be detrimental to the well-being of the donor offspring, the donor, and the nurturing, social parents. The second part discusses different approaches to the disclosure of genetic origins. The th
