Associations Between Heavy Episodic Drinking, Drinking While Gambling, and Risky Gambling.

INTRODUCTION: Understanding how patterns of drinking are associated with risky gambling in Australia is needed to inform an effective approach to minimise harm. METHODS: This cross-sectional questionnaire study reports on 2,704 subsampled participants who completed survey questions about their patterns of drinking. With logistic regressions, we examined whether frequency of heavy episodic drinking (HED) and alcohol use while gambling were associated with risky gambling while controlling for sociodemographic variables. RESULTS: Occasional HED and monthly HED were associated with any gambling

Minimum legal drinking age and the social gradient in binge drinking.

Low minimum legal drinking ages (MLDAs), as prevalent in many European countries, are severely understudied. We use rich survey and administrative data to estimate the impact of the Austrian MLDA of 16 on teenage drinking behavior and morbidity. Regression discontinuity estimates show that legal access to alcohol increases the frequency and intensity of drinking, which results in more hospital admissions due to alcohol intoxication. The effects are stronger for boys and teenagers with low socioeconomic background. Evidence suggests that the policy's impact cannot be fully explained by access.

Underage drinking: does the minimum age drinking law offer enough protection?

Underage drinking is a significant problem in the US. It is responsible for several thousand mortalities and fatalities each year, both among minors and other members of society. Additionally, underage alcohol consumption produces a severe economic burden in the US. Introduction to alcohol in youth poses serious long-term risks for adolescents, including occupational, educational, and psychosocial impairments, and increases the risk for developing alcohol abuse disorders in adulthood. In order to address and mitigate this problem, the US has set a minimum age drinking law of 21 in all 50 state

Persistence of heavy drinking and ensuing consequences at heavy drinking colleges.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine drinking levels, related harms, and secondhand effects of alcohol use at heavy drinking colleges between 1993 and 2005 at colleges with high levels of drinking in 1993. METHOD: Students attending 18 colleges with high levels of heavy episodic drinking (50% of students or more) from the 1993 Harvard School of Public Health College Alcohol Study were surveyed in 2005 (n = 4,518). Data collected through mailed and Web-based questionnaires were compared with responses from students at the same schools in 1993, 1997, 1999, and 2001 (N = 13,254) u

Drinking and drinking-related problems among heterosexual and sexual minority women.

OBJECTIVE: Studies of alcohol use among lesbians have typically used convenience samples with uncertain generalizability or general population samples with small numbers of lesbians. Here we compare rates of high-risk and problem drinking in a large sample of Chicago-area lesbians and a national sample of age- and education-matched urban heterosexual women. METHOD: Data came from comparable face-to-face interviews with 405 self-identified Chicago-area lesbians and with 548 urban women from a U.S. national sample. Rates of hazardous drinking (heavy episodic drinking, intoxication, drinking-rel

Changing society, changing drinking: solitary drinking as a non-pathological behaviour.

This study describes solitary drinking as it appears in a general population. The data are derived from a telephone survey carried out in April 1993 on a representative sample of 2015 adult drinkers from the Montréal metropolitan area. Thirty-one percent of the respondents (n = 633) reported drinking without being in the company of other people. First, solitary drinking is described according to drinking contexts and drinking patterns. Secondly, a comparison of solitary drinkers with those who did not report this behaviour is presented according to socio-demographic characteristics, social rep

Moderate drinking: an alternative treatment goal for early-stage problem drinking.

Family physicians are in a particularly good position to identify problem drinking in its early stages through the recognition of various psychosocial and medical indicators. Thorough history-taking or the use of a specific questionnaire should provide confirmation. Patients so identified can then be offered treatment designed to help them moderate their drinking, if not to achieve abstinence. The treatment strategy described in this paper involves specifying a safe drinking pattern, instructing the patient in the use of aids to appropriate drinking and seeing the patient at 1- to 2-month inte

A drink is a drink? Variation in the amount of alcohol contained in beer, wine and spirits drinks in a US methodological sample.

BACKGROUND: Empirically based estimates of the mean alcohol content of beer, wine and spirits drinks from a national sample of US drinkers are not currently available. METHODS: A sample of 310 drinkers from the 2000 National Alcohol Survey were re-contacted to participate in a telephone survey with specific questions about the drinks they consume. Subjects were instructed to prepare their usual drink of each beverage at home and to measure each alcoholic beverage and other ingredients with a provided beaker. Information on the brand or type of each beverage was used to specify the percentage

Impact of pubertal stage at first drink on adult drinking behavior.

BACKGROUND: Early alcohol use is one of the strongest predictors of later alcohol use disorders, with early use usually taking place during puberty. Many researchers have suggested drinking during puberty as a potential biological basis of the age at first drink (AFD) effect. However, the influence of the pubertal phase at alcohol use initiation on subsequent drinking in later life has not been examined so far. METHODS: Pubertal stage at first drink (PSFD) was determined in N = 283 young adults (131 males, 152 females) from an epidemiological cohort study. At ages 19, 22, and 23 years, drinki

Correlates of stages in the progression from everyday drinking to problem drinking.

Data is presented on the following related problems: (1) social characteristic associated with differences in drinking style; (2) variables correlated with intensified consumption; (3) variables, other than consumption level, correlated with harmful effects of alcohol. The concepts of status role, positional role and situation role were used to develop hypotheses. Drinking alcoholic beverages is considered as an element of situation roles in which drinking alcohol is considered meaningful and appropriate. The hypotheses are that status groups tend to differ in drinking style (problem 1) and be

To Drink or Not to Drink? Investigating Alcohol's Impact on Prostate Cancer Risk.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Prostate cancer (PCa) is a significant global health issue. The relationship between alcohol consumption and PCa risk has been the subject of extensive research, yet findings remain inconsistent. This review aims to clarify the association between alcohol intake and PCa risk, its aggressiveness, and the potential metabolic pathways involved in PCa onset. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted across multiple databases, including PubMed and MEDLINE, focusing on epidemiological studies, meta-analyses, cohort studies, and case-control studies. Drinking behavior and exercise-thermal stress: role of drink carbonation.

This study investigated the influence of drink carbonation and carbohydrate content on ad libitum drinking behavior and body fluid and electrolyte responses during prolonged exercise in the heat. Eight competitive male runners completed three 2-hr treadmill runs at 60% VO2max in an environmental chamber maintained at 30 degrees C and 40% RH. Three test drinks were used: 8% carbohydrate, low carbonation (8%-C); 8% carbohydrate, noncarbonated (8%-NC), and water (0%-NC). Blood samples were taken preexercise (0), at 60 and 120 min of exercise, and at 60 min of recovery (+60 min). The data suggest

To drink or not to drink? Assessing conflicting desires in dependent drinkers in treatment.

Reactivity to Alcohol and Neutral Cues was compared in male, inpatient problem drinkers (N = 30). Subjects reported an overall desire not to drink alcohol which decreased in the presence of the Alcohol Cue. There were no cue-specific changes in heart rate, blood pressure and arousal level and a non-significant trend for increased stress in the Alcohol Cue condition. Subgroups of subjects reporting positive and negative desire for alcohol were identified. Subjects who reported negative desire for alcohol in the Alcohol Cue condition also reported greater self-efficacy to resist drinking in the

Loss of control, heavy drinking and drinking problems in a longitudinal study.

The utility of conceptualizing alcoholism as a typically progressive disease process with regular, predictable stages is questioned. "Loss of control" was found to be only one variable among others in predicting drinking problems. It was not possible to confirm the importance that some disease conceptions of alcoholism assign to it.

To drink or not to drink: Harmful drinking is associated with hyperactivation of reward areas rather than hypoactivation of control areas in men.

BACKGROUND: The maintenance of harmful alcohol use can be considered a reiterated decision in favour of alcohol in concrete drinking occasions. These decisions are often made despite an intention to quit or reduce alcohol consumption. We tested if a hyperactive reward system and/or an impaired cognitive control system contribute to such unfavourable decision-making. METHODS: In this fMRI study, men with modest to harmful drinking behaviour, which was measured using the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), repeatedly made decisions between alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks. Migrant Background Youth and Hazardous Drinking: Drinking to Fit Into Australian Society?

INTRODUCTION: In this study, we proposed that migrant youth might have acculturation reasons to drink alcohol and explored the role of acculturative gap conflict and perceived drinking culture in predicting hazardous drinking. We examined proximal acculturation reasons for drinking in terms of drinking to fit into Australian culture and drinking to cope with parental/community expectations. METHODS: We conducted an online survey with 470 participants (age range 18-25 years). Data from those who reported having tried alcohol (n = 383; 65% female, 71% born in Australia) were analysed. A Latent Profile Analysis of drinking motives among heavy drinking college students.

INTRODUCTION: Positively (Enhancement and Social) and negatively (Coping) reinforcing drinking motives have been shown to be associated with alcohol use, alcohol-related problems, and depression among college students. Although prior studies of drinking motives have mostly consisted of variable-centered analyses, the current study used a person-centered approach where individuals were grouped into categories based on shared characteristics using Latent Profile Analysis (LPA). We investigated the utility of drinking motive profiles to determine how different profiles were associated with alcoho

Attitudes and knowledge about drinking: relationships with drinking behavior among pregnant teenagers.

Data were collected on the drinking behavior of 415 pregnant adolescents from 1990 to 1994. The relationships between knowledge and attitudes about drinking and drinking behavior were examined. Knowledge about drinking was not related to average daily volume of alcohol before or during pregnancy. Those with specific knowledge about fetal alcohol effects drank less before pregnancy, and in the first trimester, and were also less likely to drink to intoxication. Among drinkers, general knowledge about drinking was significantly related to a decrease in drinking between pre-pregnancy and first tr
