Laughing over a Drink: Exploring the Relationship Between Humor Styles and Drinking Behavior.

Humor is a key component of social relationships and has been linked to both positive health outcomes and detrimental effects, depending on the style of humor employed. However, its associations with alcohol-related behaviors remain largely underexplored. The present study investigated the relationships between humor styles, gender, age, and alcohol use. A total of 392 adults (123 males and 269 females), aged between 18 and 74 years (M = 36.64; SD = 13.11), completed the Humor Styles Questionnaire (HSQ). This data was used to assess humor styles and the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Tes

Liver molecular networks associated with drinking behavior in nonhuman primates.

BACKGROUND: Consumed ethanol is primarily metabolized by the liver, with resulting products of ethanol metabolism, acetaldehyde and salsolinol that influence brain activity and alcohol drinking behavior. Alcohol consumption in humans is highly heritable with numerous associated genetic variants. Functional variants in the ADH and ALDH genes influence liver alcohol metabolism but only account for a small percentage of variance in consumption. We hypothesized that variation in hepatic molecular networks during the induction phase, where animals consume identical amounts of alcohol, predicted var

Hepatic injury and inflammation alter ethanol metabolism and drinking behavior.

While liver injury is commonly associated with excessive alcohol consumption, how liver injury affects alcohol metabolism and drinking preference remains unclear. To answer these questions, we measured the expression and activity of alcohol dehydrogenase 1 (ADH1) and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) enzymes, ethanol and acetaldehyde levels in vivo, and binge-like and preferential drinking behaviors with drinking in the dark and two-bottle choice in animal models with liver injury. Acute and chronic carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), and acute LPS-induced liver injury repressed hepatic ALDH2 acti

Factors influencing drinking behavior in alcoholic panickers and non-panickers.

Male alcoholics who (a) experienced panic attacks prior to abusing alcohol, (b) experienced panic attacks subsequent to abusing alcohol, and (c) had not experienced panic attacks were compared on three sets of measures: the Panic Attack Questionnaire, the Restrained Drinking Scale, and the Inventory of Drinking Situations. The results showed that two groups of Ss who experienced panic attacks were more likely than non-panickers to use drugs other than alcohol, began drinking at an earlier age, had a greater proportion of parents with panic and alcohol related problems, had higher drinking rest

Impulsivity as a dynamic mechanism linking young adult sleep and drinking behavior during naturally occurring drinking episodes.

BACKGROUND: Impulsivity is implicated in theories linking sleep and drinking behavior. While well-studied across individuals, research regarding sleep, impulsivity, and drinking in real-world contexts is lacking. This study tested a theoretical pathway wherein better-than-average sleep predicts decreased impulsivity while drinking, which then predicts lesser drinking and negative alcohol consequences experienced during drinking episodes. METHOD: Young adults (N = 131) completed 21 days of ecological momentary assessment, including morning reports, self-initiated drink reports after first drin

Sports Gambling and Drinking Behaviors Over Time.

IMPORTANCE: Sports gambling has become one of the most accessible forms of gambling in the United States, and recent research suggests that sports gambling coupled with frequent alcohol use may have deleterious health consequences. OBJECTIVE: To examine the trajectories of sports gambling frequency and alcohol-related problems over time and the associations between these trajectories. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This survey study was a 2-year longitudinal study conducted in the United States. Participants were recruited from a nonprobability internet panel from 2 sources: a large cros

Drinking beliefs and behaviors among Irish adolescents.

Drinking beliefs and behaviors were investigated in a survey of 2,700 Irish postprimary students. Overall, 47% of the students reported drinking within the month prior to the survey. Drinking was most frequent among older students and males. A regression analysis indicated that perceived peer drinking was the primary predictor of current alcohol use. Smoking and involvement with other problem behaviors were also important, and parental disapproval had a small effect. This pattern of results is similar to that found in other countries and provides evidence for the applicability of social learni

Rapid nongenomic estrogen signaling controls alcohol drinking behavior in mice.

Ovarian-derived estrogen can signal non-canonically at membrane-associated receptors in the brain to rapidly regulate neuronal function. Early alcohol drinking confers greater risk for alcohol use disorder in women than men, and binge alcohol drinking is correlated with high estrogen levels, but a causal role for estrogen in driving alcohol drinking has not been established. We found that female mice displayed greater binge alcohol drinking and reduced avoidance when estrogen was high during the estrous cycle than when it was low. The pro-drinking, but not anxiolytic, effect of high endogenous

Social context, perceived norms and drinking behavior in young people.

An anonymous questionnaire was administered to 1,283 middle school/high school students and 930 college students. The students responded to instruments assessing social context of drinking, perceived norms of drinking, alcohol use intensity, and frequencies of impaired driving (DWI) and riding with an impaired driver (RWID). Canonical correlation analyses revealed that in middle school/high school students, there are discernable patterns of association between social context, perceived norm and alcohol abuse measures. Drinking intensity for self was closely related to several social context va

Clozapine reduces water-drinking behavior in schizophrenic patients with polydipsia.

Disordered water balance, or polydipsia, is an underassessed and underreported phenomenon present in the severely psychiatrically disabled population. Prevalence rates for polydipsia range from 6.2 to 20%. We followed up five male patients (mean age 43) with chronic schizophrenia who met the Kane criteria for being treatment nonresponders and who, in addition, had marked polydipsia. Three patients had previously received medical care for hyponatremia and had to be placed on fluid restriction when admitted to the hospital. All patients exhibited polydipsia despite high doses of typical antipsyc

Maternal drinking behavior and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders in adolescents with criminal behavior in southern Brazil.

Prenatal alcohol exposure can have serious and permanent adverse effects. The developing brain is the most vulnerable organ to the insults of prenatal alcohol exposure. A behavioral phenotype of prenatal alcohol exposure including conduct disorders is also described. This study on a sample of Brazilian adolescents convicted for criminal behavior aimed to evaluate possible clinical features of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS). These were compared to a control group of school adolescents, as well as tested for other environmental risk factors for antisocial behavior. A sample of 262 institutionalize

Context matters: Student-perceived binge drinking norms at faculty-level relate to binge drinking behavior in higher education.

BACKGROUND: Binge drinking in higher education is an important problem. To target binge drinking in students it is necessary to study the social context of students. Faculties (i.e., colleges or schools in Northern American education) are social contexts in which students behave, but little is known about how the faculty structure relates to monthly binge drinking. This study investigates the relationship with student-perceived binge drinking norms at faculty-level in addition to known personal determinants. METHODS: Data were collected in 7181 students within 22 faculty-level units, using an

Manganese exposure from drinking water and children's classroom behavior in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Evidence of neurological, cognitive, and neuropsychological effects of manganese (Mn) exposure from drinking water (WMn) in children has generated widespread public health concern. At elevated exposures, Mn has been associated with increased levels of externalizing behaviors, including irritability, aggression, and impulsivity. Little is known about potential effects at lower exposures, especially in children. Moreover, little is known regarding potential interactions between exposure to Mn and other metals, especially arsenic (As). OBJECTIVES: We conducted a cross-sectional study

A latent profile analysis of blackout drinking behavior among young adults.

BACKGROUND: Blackout drinking, or alcohol-induced memory loss during a drinking occasion, is associated with additional negative alcohol-related outcomes. Brief motivational interventions targeting higher-risk alcohol use behavior have largely ignored blackout drinking. Including personalized information on blackout drinking could maximize intervention impact. To move toward incorporating content on blackout drinking in prevention and intervention materials, it is imperative to understand individual-level differences in blackout drinking. The current study aimed to identify latent profiles of

Alcohol solution strength preference predicts compulsive-like drinking behavior in rats.

BACKGROUND: Understanding compulsive drinking behavior is key to improving outcomes in the treatment of addiction. In the present study, we investigated compulsive-like drinking in alcohol-addicted rats using the alcohol deprivation effect (ADE) model of relapse behavior, which involves repeated deprivation and reintroduction phases; the latter approximate relapse. METHODS: High-resolution longitudinal drinking and locomotor data were measured while rats (n = 30) underwent a four-bottle (water, 5%, 10%, 20% alcohol v/v) free-choice ADE paradigm. Alcohol bottles were adulterated with the bitte

Operant behavior and drinking suppression in vasopressin-deficient rats (Brattleboro strain).

A group of Brattleboro rats homozygous for diabetes insipidus (DI) and a group of normal Long-Evans (LE) rats were deprived of water and tested on two tasks thought to measure reinforcement strength: a progressive-ratio schedule in an operant chamber and a quinine-induced drinking-suppression task. Since water-deprived DI rats are in more severe negative water balance than LE rats, it was hypothesized that they would sustain higher ratios than LE rats on the progressive-ratio schedule and would suppress drinking at higher quinine concentrations than LE rats. It was found that DI rats responded

Daily assessments of behavioral economic indices and drinking among rural-residing adults with at-risk drinking.

In a secondary analysis among adults with at-risk drinking who live in rural areas (N = 75; 62.7% Female; 98.7% White), we examined the predictive ability of behavioral economic (BE) indices (demand, delay discounting, and proportion of alcohol-free activities) for next-day alcohol use via daily surveys across the range of alcohol use severity. These relations were tested using linear mixed-effects models, including evaluating the interaction of BE indices with alcohol use severity. In unadjusted analyses, proportion of alcohol-free activities (β [95% CI]: -0.022 [-0.038, -0.006]), demand inte

Protective behavioral strategies and planned drinking relate to high intensity drinking and consequences at the day level.

BACKGROUND: Heavy episodic drinking (HED; 4 + [females]/5 + [males] drinks/occasion), high-intensity drinking (HID; 8 + [females]/10 + [males] drinks/occasion), and drinking events that are planned are all associated with negative consequences. Protective behavioral strategies (PBS) are techniques to minimize alcohol-related consequences. In this day-level study, we hypothesized (1) PBS use would be associated with safer same-day drinking (lower odds of HID and negative consequences), and (2) risks of HID and consequences associated with planned drinking would be reduced on days with higher PB

Social anxiety symptoms and drinking behaviors among college students: the mediating effects of drinking motives.

The impact of social anxiety on negative alcohol-related behaviors among college students has been studied extensively. Drinking motives are considered the most proximal indicator of college student drinking behavior. The current study examined the mediating role of drinking motives in the relationship that social anxiety symptoms have with problematic (alcohol consumption, harmful drinking, and negative consequences) and safe (protective behavioral strategies) drinking behaviors. Participants were 532 undergraduates who completed measures of social anxiety, drinking motives, alcohol use, harm

Demographic characteristics, drinking patterns and drink-driving behavior of injured male drivers and motorcycle riders.

OBJECTIVE: The demographic characteristics, usual drinking and drink-driving patterns, incidence of problem drinking, precrash drinking behavior and attitudes towards drink-driving of crash-involved male drivers and riders are described and related to blood alcohol concentration (BAC) on admission to hospital. A better understanding of these issues will enable drink-driving countermeasures to target more specifically those individuals who are most at risk of being killed or injured in alcohol-related road crashes. METHOD: Between June 1985 and April 1987 interviews were conducted with a sampl
