Purpose: Dry needling (DN) regulations among the Canadian physiotherapy colleges were compiled to make recommendations toward a national guideline. Method: DN regulatory data extracted from regulatory body websites using an environmental scan framework was checked by an independent reviewer. Colleges were contacted to fill gaps identified from the web. Extracted content was compared to recommendations from two Canadian DN reviews to identify gaps in regulation. Results: DN regulation is done through legislation (two colleges), practice guidelines (one), or both (seven), depending on the colleg

PURPOSE: Lateral epicondylitis (LE), a common disease, especially in middle age, causes decreased productivity and economic losses. The first-line treatment for LE is conservative and consists of topical and oral anti-inflammatory drugs, ice application, and brace use. If the first-line treatment fails, second-line treatment modalities, which are generally invasive, are offered. Second-line therapeutic regimens include saline, corticosteroid, or platelet-rich plasma injections. Dry needling is relatively new. We hypothesized that dry needling would be at least as effective as first-line treatm

INTRODUCTION: Spasticity is a common problem in stroke patients. Treatments of spasticity often have side effects or are insufficiently effective. Dry needling (DN) has been proposed as a potential additional option to consider in the multimodal treatment of post-stroke spasticity, although questions about its safety remain. The goal of this study is to assess the safety of DN in stroke patients.
EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: A systematic search in Medline, Embase, The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, CIHNAL and PEDro was conducted in June 2023. Two reviewers independently screened abstracts accordi

BACKGROUND: Dry needling (DN) is an evidence based treatment technique that is accepted and used by physical therapists in the United States. This clinical commentary is the second in a two-part series outlining some of the pertinent anatomy and other issues that are needed for optimal utilization of this treatment modality. Part one was an overview of the thorax with a summary of reported adverse effects (AEs) and the underlying anatomy that could be used to minimize patient risk. As is the case with any intervention, the technique of dry needling has some inherent patient risk. The incidence

BACKGROUND: Short-term vasodilatation in the pain area after dry needling (DN) of active trigger points (TrPs) was recorded in several cases of sciatica. Moreover, the presence of TrPs in sciatica patients secondary to primary lesion was suggested. Still, it is not known how often they occur and if every TrPs can provoke vasomotor reactions. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of active TrPs among subacute sciatica patients and the response to DN under infrared thermovision (IRT) camera control.

Piriformis syndrome is an often overlooked cause of chronic buttock or low back pain, sometimes radiating to the posterior thigh. Despite various treatment options, a definitive standard therapy has not been established. Dry needling has recently gained attention as a non-pharmacological intervention, especially when guided by ultrasound to enhance accuracy and safety. A 69-year-old woman presented with a 9-month history of fluctuating right gluteal pain, aggravated by prolonged sitting and movements. Physical examination revealed tenderness in the piriformis area and positive provocative test

This case study describes a severe and rare complication following the placement of a total hip prosthesis in a 59-year-old woman. During rehabilitation, a physiotherapist incorporated dry needling alongside conventional exercises. A large ulcer developed near the surgical scar, attributed to pyoderma gangrenosum. The initiation of appropriate treatment led to a successful recovery, with no discernible impact on the current functional status. This case report aims to highlight the lack of empirical support for the use of dry needling in the post-prosthesis surgery rehabilitation process and em

BackgroundCarpometacarpal (CMC) osteoarthritis (OA) of the thumb is a painful condition that affects over 15% of individuals above the age of 30 and up to 30% of post-menopausal women. Dry needling (DN) has been found to reduce pain and disability in a variety of neuromusculoskeletal conditions; however, DN in the management of CMC OA has not been well studied.MethodsConsecutive patients with clinical and radiographic evidence of CMC OA were treated with DN. The primary outcome measure was pain using the Numerical Pain Rating Scale (NPRS) at 12 weeks. Secondary outcome measures were the Upper

Deep dry needling is an evidence-based treatment technique that is accepted and used by physical therapists for treatment of musculoskeletal pain. We present a case of iatrogenic pneumothorax due to deep dry needling over the posterior thorax. A 36-year old presented with right chest pain 2 hours after dry needling for pain in his back muscles. Chest radiograph suggested small right pneumothorax and the finding was confirmed by computed tomography. Not only should practitioners and their patients be aware of potential complications of dry needling, but also physicians who might see patients wi

BACKGROUND: Dry needling is an evidence-based treatment technique that is accepted and used by physical therapists in the United States. This treatment approach focuses on releasing or inactivating muscular trigger points to decrease pain, reduce muscle tension, and assist patients with an accelerated return to active rehabilitation.
ISSUE: While commonly used, the technique has some patient risk and value of the treatment should be based on benefit compared to the potential risk. Adverse effects (AEs) with dry needling can be mild or severe, with overall incidence rates varying from zero to

BACKGROUND: Dry needling (DN) has emerged as a popular therapeutic intervention for managing musculoskeletal pain. While major adverse events are generally rare, those that have been reported in vulnerable areas such as the spine and thorax can be serious and warrant further investigation regarding safe techniques in and around these areas.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to reproduce the methods employed by Williams et al. but with an inferior-medial multifidus DN technique to determine if a dry needle can penetrate the ligamentum flavum (LF) and breach the spinal canal at the thoraco

BACKGROUND: Dry needling is an increasingly popular technique for relieving musculoskeletal pain, through targeting myofascial trigger points. Existing evidence indicates that dry needling is effective in short-term management of pain, with research showing efficacy in improving functional outcomes when compared to other treatments.
INDICATIONS: Myofascial trigger points may result in range of motion limitations and muscle weakness. Noninvasive treatments for musculoskeletal pain associated with myofascial trigger points, such as stretching or warm compresses, may not provide significant bene

INTRODUCTION: Piriformis muscle syndrome (PMS) is a disorder that can lead to symptoms of buttock pain and limited hip-joint mobility, and may have an impact on quality of life.
METHODS: Thirty-two patients with PMS were randomized to the treatment group, which included three sessions of ultrasound-guided dry needling (DN) of the piriformis muscle (n = 16), or a waitlist control group (n = 16). The primary outcome was pain intensity measured on the visual analog scale recorded at baseline and then at 72 hours and 1 week after treatment.
RESULTS: At 1-week follow-up, pain intensity was signif

This case series describes three patients who presented with right medial elbow pain managed unsuccessfully with conservative treatment that included medication, massage, exercise therapy, ultrasound therapy, neurodynamic mobilization, and taping. Diagnosis of cubital tunnel syndrome was based on palpatory findings, a positive elbow flexion test, and a positive Tinel's sign. Conventionally, the intervention for this entrapment has been surgical decompression, with successful outcomes. This is potentially a first-time description of the successful management of cubital tunnel syndrome with dry

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Osteoarthritis is a "wear and tear" injury characterized by degeneration of articular cartilage, formation of osteophytes, microfractures, and sclerosis. These physiological changes result in joint pain, stiffness, and deformity. One potential treatment for this is periosteal electrical dry needling.
RECENT FINDINGS: We performed a systematic search for studies in PubMed, Google Scholar, Embase, and Cochrane. Sources published from 2014 to the present were eligible for inclusion in the review. After an initial search, 48 studies were identified, 22 of which were duplicates

Background/Objectives: The current study aimed to characterize the adverse reactions associated with dry needling (DN) treatments reported by Polish physiotherapists, with a secondary objective of investigating whether the level of DN experience influences the occurrence of these adverse effects. Methods: A total of 102 Polish physiotherapists, all with regular DN practice, participated in an ad hoc online survey. The participants were categorized by their level of experience in DN treatment: 44 with 0-2 years, 43 with 3-6 years, and 15 with more than 7 years of experience. The survey consiste
